Chapter 581 Chapter 581
Blaise stabbed the call button before she changed her mind. At the second ring, she almost hung up.
“Hello?”
“Hi—mom.”
There was a pause. “Blaise?”
She scowled at the floor; the woman had one daughter. What other female would call her mom? “Yeah,” she wanted to smile, to feel that connection she was told mother and child had, but it wasn’t there. “I just thought I’d touch base with you and see how everyone is.”
“Oh. Well, everyone is fine.”
“That’s good.” As awkward moments went, this was off the charts.
“Your brother has a new position in the clan, we’re all very proud.”
“Great.” Of course, it was about the perfect brother. “Aunt Esina, she’s doing good?” The only person that never used to look at her like she was a mistake.
“Yes, you know her; she’ll never change.”
She wanted to say, ‘hey, remember Emersyn? We found her,’ but didn’t know if it was safe to do that. Blaise knew her aunt stayed in touch with those back home.
“How is your work going?”
She looked out the window where Noah and Griffin were standing. “It’s going good. I’m on the road a lot.”
“Seeing the sights is nice.”
“Yeah, well, haven’t been seeing much since that storm.”
“No, I imagine not. We got quite a bit of snow here.”
Blaise nodded, wanting to tell her that her truck was finished, about her job and her home, but it didn’t feel right. “So, ah, I don’t know if I’ll make it home for the holidays—the Alliance is keeping me pretty busy.”
“Oh, that’s fine, dear.”
She nodded again; it always was. “Okay, I won’t keep you, I need to get back to work.”
“All right.”
“Tell everyone I said hey, and I’ll call when I can.”
“Okay, Blaise.”
She stood there waiting for something. The things she knew weren’t going to happen.
“Love you, mom,” she blurted out.
“Be safe, Blaise.” The line went quiet.
Blaise wrapped her arms around her waist and looked out the window again. She refused to acknowledge her view was blurred by wet eyes. Taking a deep breath, she nodded to herself, wiped her hand over her face, and then turned on her heel to go out with the men.
They’d be heading out soon, and she wanted to make sure they had enough drinks and things to get through so they didn’t have to stop to eat.
She may not have a family that doted on her, or cared enough to call, but she had a team that counted on her, and she would never be their weak link.
