Chapter 140 Chapter 140
Kobie looked over at Blair again. She did that a lot more than she should be. She’d known they would send a male, what surprised her was they’d sent a young one and so far, she was impressed with him. He was around her age, but there was something harder about him. She looked out the window and rolled her eyes at her brain’s stupid side trip, aside from the muscles she was sure were under his clothes. But there was something darker in there that you didn’t see with most men their age. She inhaled and could only smell his scent on the shirt he’d given her. Did they have to send someone so damned sexy? She blew out a breath, trying to keep her body from betraying her to the shifters sitting behind her. She smirked. At least he wouldn’t smell it.
She glanced once more, then looked away. His hair was even whiter than her own and spiked up messy like he spent hours running his hands through it. It was so different from the slicked-back, neat hair on the men Kobie was used to being around. His eyes were the palest blue. She thought he was looking right through her each time they connected with her own.
His phone rang and startled her.
He answered it quickly. “Yeah?” His brows furrowed, and he gripped the wheel tighter and kept driving fast. “When? Is everyone okay?” He glanced in the side mirror, then at the one on her side. “Don’t go back, find somewhere to hole up and call that number again and tell them…” He held the phone out and glanced at it before putting it back to his ear, “yeah I’ll tell her.” He hung up but continued to hold his phone. He held it out to her. “Check these on the map and see where the closest is.”
Kobie took the phone but continued to look at him. “What’s happened.”
His pale eyes connected with hers briefly. “That was your friend, Fish. Someone tore apart their place before he got back,” she sucked in a breath, “his father was at your place checking for others.”
“Was there anyone?” She held her breath.
Blair just shook his head and didn’t say anymore. “Check those locations.” He glanced in the mirror to see all but that teen Nichelle was napping. “We may need to dump the van and go cross-country to stay off their radar.”
She watched him for a moment, then glanced at the others behind him. “We’ll need some packs and supplies if we’re doing that.”
“Will they be able to?” He asked in a hushed voice.
Kobie opened the message on his phone and set the phone on the map on her lap. “Yeah, Daisie could run for days if she had to.”
“If they found your friend’s place, they’re going to figure out you crossed the border.” He reached over and placed a hand over hers until she looked at him. “Tomas’ organization is huge. He has the resources to track you from one end of the globe to the other.”
Her heart picked up the tempo. What he was saying sunk in. This Tomas person would find them anywhere they went. She appreciated his complete honesty with her, even though it scared her. “You and I will get them to our destination.”
Blair watched her for a second more, then squeezed her hand and released it.
She looked back at the map.
“How do I get this shit off my nose?”
She smirked at his distraught tone.
“Look, you’re just going to have to trust that I can control myself and my cat—” he made a sound of exasperation, “I’ve had years of fucking practice with that, but I need all my senses to get us through this.”
Kobie blew out a breath. He was right. She didn’t know him, but she trusted him, and from the signs her cat had been conveying, so did she. That was surprising. They just met. She’d never been conflicted with her cat, ever. Leaning down, she opened her pack and pulled out a wipe. Grabbing the bottle of alcohol, she sprayed the wipe and held it out to him. “It will burn for a few seconds, but in a few minutes, you’ll be able to smell again.”
Blair raised an eyebrow as he took it from her. “Thank you.”
Kobie nodded, “just don’t cross me, you won’t like the outcome at all.”
He glanced to the road, then back to her. “Warning received.” He smirked at her. “Find the nearest town on there. We will make a quick stop and get everything we’ll need.” He didn’t even look to see if she was paying attention, just rubbed at his face with the wipe.
She smirked when he winced as the burning in his nostrils hit him. Kobie had tried it on herself before to see how effective it was, the ointment, alcohol, all of it, so she knew his reaction wasn’t exaggerated in the slightest.
“Nasty.” He said quietly but did it again to make sure he got all the ointment off. Kobie looked behind her to see Nichelle give her a shocked look. Kobie didn’t need to voice why. She knew the younger woman had been listening to them the whole time. Whatever it took to get all of them to their destination safely, Kobie would do and then some.
