Chapter 166

Chapter 166

When Robert stepped back into the police station, he was hit with a wave of noise and the lingering tension in the air.

In the hallway, tired officers huddled in small groups, worn out from dealing with the rowdy family members.

A young cop spotted Robert and rushed over, relieved. "Officer Davis, Ben's family is still making a scene, refusing to budge."

Robert nodded, taking a moment to listen outside the door. Inside, voices clashed like swords, cutting through the air.

"That lady scrubbed the bathroom clean, trying to hide Ben's hair from the paternity test!"

"If she's innocent, why go to such lengths?"

An elderly woman choked up, tears glistening. "I lost my son, now they won't let me take my grandson home!"

"She couldn't have a son, now she's keeping our grandson from us! Can't I kick her out as my son's wife?" an angry old man ranted.

As Robert entered, all eyes turned to him.

In a composed tone, he said, "I get your concerns. If you're suspicious, let's do a paternity test with the child."

His words deflated the tension. Murmurs of relief and approval rippled through the room.

But then Robert's tone shifted. "But let's be sure. If you've raised this child and he's not Ben's, what then?"

His words sobered the room. Awkwardness filled the air, emotions simmering beneath the surface.

Ignoring the reactions, Robert told Albert, "Bring in Layla's boyfriend for a paternity test with the child. Let's go step by step and find out who the father is."

Ben's parents paled at the mention.

Ethan, nearby, couldn't resist needling them. "Wow, you're so selfless. The nation thanks you for your sacrifice. Whose kid it is doesn't matter, right?"

Before he could finish, Ben's mother started trembling with anger, but she couldn't find the words to respond. The entire room fell into an awkward silence.

As Robert left to find Ryan, he bumped into him coming out of the lab, holding a toxicology report.

With a hint of pride, Ryan told Robert, "We found a drug in Ben's urine. It causes muscle relaxation, affecting driving control."

Taking a moment, Ryan couldn't help but chime in, "Sophia really nailed it again. She's got a knack for hitting the bullseye."

Robert's lips curved into a satisfied smile at the mention of Sophia.

In a soft voice, he remarked, "Sophia's something else. Despite everything, she stays on the right path, not letting hate cloud her judgment. I'm impressed by her."

Ryan shot him a teasing look, but Robert brushed it off.

Quickly devising a plan to locate Gary, Robert headed to the interrogation room to talk to Ada.

The room was starkly lit, casting a harsh glow as Ada sat rigid at the table.

Facing her, Robert spread out some printed evidence. "Ada, these are from your phone. At 5:10 PM, you got this picture."

The photo displayed Ben, Layla, and their child together.

"You deleted it and wiped your Facebook cache," Robert's voice was steady. "You claim ignorance about your husband's affair, but these say otherwise. Still sticking to your story?"

Ada paled, gripping the chair's edge, her voice shaky. "I swear I didn't delete those. I had no clue!"

Handing her another toxicology report, Robert remained firm. "You burned Ben's body not to protect your daughter, but to hide the truth."

"This drug hits fast, affecting driving. You know what that means. And you called Layla's boyfriend, leading him to the hospital, hoping your in-laws would find out."

Sliding the call records over, Robert locked eyes with Ada. "We can trace that number. Come clean now, and I can help."

Ada's gaze shifted from the photo to the report and then the call records. Finally, she let go, whispering, "It was me. I did it."

Robert's gaze sharpened. "Explain. And why did you kill Dana?"

"Dana?" Ada looked confused. "Who's that? I don't know her."

Realizing Ada wasn't the one behind Dana's death or the staged accident, Robert changed tactics. "How did you know Ben would be near the tracks? How was the poison given?"

Ada lowered her head, barely audible. "We're married. I know his routines. Poison was in his food."

"How was it given?" Robert pressed.

Looking up, Ada corrected herself, "No, it was in his drink."

Robert understood Ada wasn't involved in the buried bodies or the fake accident.
