Chapter 159

Chapter 159

Under Ryan's wing, Sophia delved into the world of facial reconstruction technology.

This new skill, blending anatomy, forensic science, and cutting-edge tech, proved quite the challenge for a newbie like Sophia.

Initially, the intricate interface and data analysis left Sophia feeling a tad overwhelmed. However, Ryan's laid-back and witty teaching style made the technology not only intriguing but also fun.

"Hey, Sophia, you better thank your lucky stars for having me as your guide," Ryan quipped, deftly adjusting the laser 3D scanner. "Not everyone gets to learn from a pro like yours truly."

Sophia couldn't help but chuckle, finding Ryan's confidence a bit much. Still, she had to give him credit for his expertise.

Before she could tease him, Ryan sighed, "Technology moves at lightning speed these days. Back in my intern days, we had it rough. Equipment malfunctions were the norm. Unlike now, where one gadget can do the job of a whole lab from back then."

As he reminisced, a hint of nostalgia crossed his face, yet his hands moved with precision. Guiding the laser scanner along the skull, the red light flickered as data on the screen danced.

"See that? This scanner grabs every detail on the skull's surface," Ryan pointed at the screen displaying emerging point cloud data. "These points help create a 3D model, which, with some algorithms, can reconstruct the deceased person's facial features."

Watching in awe, Sophia saw the data points connect, forming lines that filled in to shape a complete facial model. With each update, the model grew more lifelike. She held her breath, not wanting to miss this enchanting process.

At that moment, she realized forensic science wasn't just about handling lifeless bodies but using these methods to bring the deceased back to life in a sense. This realization sparked a deep passion within her.

Finally, two vivid faces appeared on the screen. The man had bold eyebrows, slightly sunken cheekbones, and a unique, rugged look; the woman boasted defined features, high cheekbones, a straight nose, and an elegant facial structure. The man's face, though imperfect, held a story in its features, while the woman exuded undeniable beauty.

"How's that for impressive?" Ryan beamed at Sophia, his confidence shining through. "But wait, there's more. Next up, we dive into the police station's high-tech facial recognition system."

"Really?" Sophia's interest was piqued.

"Absolutely," Ryan said dramatically, lifting his chin. "Come with me."

He uploaded the two reconstructed images into the computer system, and the program whirred to life. Photos flashed on the screen at a speed impossible to follow with the naked eye, like a digital game of cat and mouse. Sophia was riveted, her heart pounding.

After a few minutes, the system halted abruptly. A photo froze on the screen, nearly identical to the reconstructed image of the woman.

"We got her!" Ryan cheered, thumping the table in excitement, then dialed Robert. "Officer Davis, we've ID'd the female victim! She's Dana Diaz, a 25-year-old local gal, single, who came back to town after college."

After the call, he turned to Sophia, eyes gleaming with pride. "This is tech's might. From a cold skull to a living identity, this is how us forensic folks unveil the truth."

Sophia stayed silent, sensing Ryan's zeal and dedication. This wasn't just work; it was a mission against time, death, and lies.

The next morning, as Sophia stepped into the office, she was drawn to the buzz at the nurse's station.

"Sophia, guess what!" Emily rushed over, lowering her voice conspiratorially. "You won't believe what went down in the department today."

"What's the scoop?" Sophia played along.

"Remember Ben, the guy found dead in a car with a severed head?" Emily's eyes sparkled. "His wife had him cremated yesterday, and today, a kid claiming to be his illegitimate son showed up for a DNA test to inherit!"

"And then what? Did they get what they wanted?" Sophia raised an eyebrow, finding it all a bit absurd.

"No way!" Emily chuckled, tears forming in her eyes. "The body was already ashes. His wife was fuming, and the mistress got zilch."

Other nurses chimed in, "She's loaded, has kids, no hubby to answer to. With his cash, she's set for life!"

"But," Sophia pondered, speaking earnestly, "even without a DNA test, if the other party can prove cohabitation with birth records, neighbor testimonies, or child support receipts, the court might still consider it."

Skipping the DNA test didn't solve everything.
