Chapter 232
Chapter 232
Lyrien's POV
The blade trembled in my hand, poised just inches from my heart. My mind raced with images of Lorcan, of what they'd do to him if I failed. One quick thrust and it would all be over. I'd save him. I'd finally do something right.
Just as I steadied my grip, a blinding streak of gold-red fire sliced through the air. The heat singed my fingertips as the dagger flew from my hand, clattering against the stone floor.
"Stop, Lyrien! That's not your brother!" a familiar voice roared. "Lorcan is safe!"
Kael burst from the treeline in his half-dragon form, scales glittering across his cheekbones and forearms. His eyes blazed with fury, actual flames dancing in his irises. The sight was both terrifying and magnificent.
"What the fuck?" I gasped, my heart pounding against my ribs.
Morgravia's face contorted with rage. "You meddling lizard!" she snarled, dark energy crackling around her fingertips.
"I found the real Lorcan," Kael said, not taking his eyes off Morgravia. "He's unconscious but unharmed."
The revelation hit me like a physical blow. I turned toward "Lorcan," watching in horror as his features began to twist and distort. His tall frame shrank, limbs contorting until all that remained was a common brown rat scurrying across the floor.
"I knew something was wrong," I whispered, a wave of relief washing over me. "I fucking knew it."
Morgravia abandoned all pretense, her elegant features hardening as she summoned a swirling vortex of shadow magic. "You've ruined everything!" she shrieked, hurling a blast of darkness toward us.
Kael leapt in front of me, his dragon fire creating a shield of flame that absorbed most of the attack. I could feel the heat radiating from his body as he protected me. In the same motion, he sent precise jets of flame toward Alaric, burning through the shadowy bonds that held him captive.
Alaric slumped forward as the restraints dissolved, but he recovered quickly. Despite his weakened state, he drew his elvish blade, which glowed with an ethereal green light.
"I believe I owe you some payback," Alaric said, his voice hoarse but determined.
We formed a triangle around Morgravia, who spun wildly, trying to keep all three of us in her sights. Her beautiful face was twisted into something monstrous, her eyes pools of darkness.
"You can't defeat me," she hissed.
She unleashed a barrage of shadow bolts, forcing us to scatter. Kael responded with blasts of dragon fire that illuminated the clearing in shades of orange and gold. Each time his flames met her shadows, the collision sent shock waves through the air.
Alaric moved with surprising grace despite his injuries, his elvish blade cutting through Morgravia's magic as he closed in. The sword left trails of green light in its wake, disrupting her dark energy fields.
I felt strangely calm amid the chaos. Something was stirring within me—a cool, silver energy that flowed through my veins. It wasn't the frantic, unstable power I'd feared all my life. This was different. Controlled. I lifted my hands and watched in awe as moonlight seemed to pour from my fingertips.
"The fuck is happening?" I whispered to myself.
Kael noticed the change and shot me a quick glance. "Trust yourself, Lyrien!"
I didn't think—I just acted. Directing my hands toward Morgravia, I released a stream of silver light that crashed against her shadow shield. The witch staggered backward, clearly surprised by the force of my attack.
"Now!" Kael shouted.
We struck simultaneously—dragon fire from the right, elvish magic from the left, and my moonlight from the center. The combined assault overwhelmed Morgravia's defenses, sending her crashing to the ground. She tried to rise, but Kael conjured flames that formed a binding net around her, while Alaric added his own magic to strengthen the restraint.
Morgravia struggled futilely, her perfect features contorted with rage. "Kill me then," she spat. "Finish what you started."
I approached slowly, the silver light still pulsing around my hands. I could feel the power surging, begging for release. One burst would end her existence. Simple. Clean. Justified.
But as I stood over her, Seren's face flashed in my mind—her green eyes, her tentative smile. The same eyes that had widened in shock when my power had accidentally taken her life.
The memory of blood on my hands. The weight of a life I'd never meant to take.
"I can't," I said, letting the silver light fade from my fingertips. "She's Seren's mother."
Morgravia laughed, a hollow, bitter sound. "Still the same weak little girl, aren't you? Sentiment will be your downfall."
"It's not weakness to choose mercy," I replied, my voice steadier than I expected. "I've already killed her daughter with these hands. I won't take her mother too."
Kael stepped beside me, his hand warm on my shoulder. "There are punishments worse than death. The Council will see she faces justice for her crimes."
"You're making a mistake," Morgravia hissed. "When I break free—"
"You won't," Alaric interrupted, tightening the magical bonds. "Elvish bindings are quite thorough."
Morgravia's eyes suddenly darkened, the pupils expanding until they consumed the whites. When she spoke again, her voice had changed—deeper, resonating with ancient power.
"Mark my words, moon child," she growled. "The blood you refused to spill today will haunt you. The mercy you show is your greatest weakness. When the shadows come for you—and they will—remember this moment when you could have ended it all."
The air around us grew cold as her words seemed to take physical form, swirling around us like black smoke.
"Your fate carries death, dragon spawn," she continued, turning her gaze to Kael. "Every love you've ever known has withered in your arms. This one will be no different."
Alaric muttered something in Elvish, and the bindings around Morgravia tightened. Her body convulsed, and the darkness receded from her eyes, though her hateful glare remained.
"Ignore her," Alaric said firmly. "Curses only have power if you believe in them."
I nodded, but the chill of her words had already seeped into my bones. The silver energy inside me pulsed in response, as if recognizing a true threat. For a moment, I considered what would have happened if Kael hadn't arrived when he did—the dagger plunging into my heart, my life ending based on a cruel deception.
