Darren's POV chapter 31
The shrill ringing of my phone jolts me up from my thoughts. I tried to ignore it but the caller was persistent. I hissed, stretching my hand across the night stand and grabbing it. I dragged the phone to eye view, squinting as I tried to make out the caller's ID. Adams.
I felt my stomach twist with anger, my grip tightening around the phone. With a sigh, I picked up the call. I hell knew he was going to speak about me getting a mate. I disliked the idea of him trying to pin this mate shit on my head.
“What?” I barked, my voice sharp.
“Speaking rudely to an elder like me won't stop me from passing the message,”he said calmly.
“Go straight to the point or swallow those words. I'm not asking twice!” I yelled, my jaw tightening.
“Alpha Darren,” he began, his voice dropping to octave. “There's trouble.”
He said. I sat upright on my bed, the sentence making my heart to sink.
“What trouble?” I questioned, my voice hoarse, my posture stiffening.
“We...we” he stammered over the phone, this gratted on my nerves, anger surging through my veins.
“Speak!” I ordered.
He cleared his throat over the phone, the tension palapable.
“Alpha Darren ” he addressed. “There has been another attack in the park. This attack claimed the life of three ladies.”
My heart skipped, my jaw dropping.
“I'm listening,” I said, my voice low and deadly.
I still had a strong believe that Sabrina had a hand in this, despite Dan's strong claim that she wouldn't be resurrected. I wasn't hallucinating the time she attacked me. I saw her face.
“We are yet to identify who it was, I'll keep you informed!” he said.
Before I could say another word, he hung up. I would have been furious, mad at him for hanging up on me, instead I was filled with dread, the fear of the unknown enveloping me.
My hand ran through my hair, a sigh escaping my lips. Whoever it was, I'd find out and deal with the person, that is for sure. For now, I'd have to discuss with Kye.
I stood from my mattress, dragging my feet to Kyle's room.
“Kyle, ” I called, my fist clenching into knuckles as I knocked on the door.
“Kye?” I called again.
No response.
My grip tightened on the door knob and I yanked the door open, revealing an empty room. I placed my hand on my jaw, lost in thoughts. Just then, my ear twitched in one direction. I could hear Heather moan.
“You've got to be kidding me,” I growled, my fist clenching beside me.
I felt a pang of jealousy, my wolf felt it too. I had started feeling the urge to have Heather to myself. For over the years, I and Kyle shared the same woman.
But Heather? She was special. She made me want her to myself.
I stormed to her room, forcefully yanking the door open. My gaze falling on Kyle's body. He pinned Heather on the wall.
I thought I saw him leave Kyle's room after having a quickie with her. Maybe he returned.
For the first time, I was livid. I have never gotten involved in a disagreement with Kyle, maybe today was going to be different.
“Kyle, I would love to speak with you ” I said, willing my self to stay still, masking the anger which brewed in me with a straight poker face.
“I'm busy,” he groaned, his breath coming in short haggard gasps.
Busy?
“Kyle, I won't ask twice!” I thundered, walking out of the room.
I could hear Heather's gasps and my stomach twisted in anger.
“Get a grip of your emotions,” I growled, taking a deep breath. My wolf clawed in my chest, trying hard to take control. He wanted to fight Kyle. That'd be stupid.
Fighting my Beta just because of a fuck partner was cringe.
While waiting for Kyle, I poured a generous amount of whiskey in the hour glass shape cup, gulping it down on a hurry to numb the ache in my chest. The hot liquid slid down my throat, burning my chest as I savoured the unique taste which it offered.
I could hear his foot steps grow loud as he trudged down the stairs, his face drawn. He sat at the other end of the dining table, crossing his leg.
“What do you wanna talk about?” he asked reluctantly, his voice slicing through the serene atmosphere.
I emptied the bottle of whiskey in my cup, swirling it up in the air,my lips resting on it as I gulped it down.
“I got news from the pack,” I began, my voice cold. Kyle was smart enough to see the hint, his brow arched and he leaned closer, placing his arm on the table.
"I'm listening,” he muttered, his voice barely above a whisper.
My chest tightened, the words stuck in my throat. I felt like a Total failure for not protecting my pack, leaving them at the mercy of the witches.
"Let me guess," Kyle interrupted rudely. “We were attacked?”
I gave him a sad nod, my shoulders shrugging.
“Fuck,,” he cursed beneath his breath, shaking his head furiously.
“Yup,” I drawled. “This time, we lost three she wolves.”
“A shame the attacker didn't go for the male wolves we had.” Kyle scoffed.
Was this supposed to be funny? We lost three female wolves and he thinks it's a joke. I scowled at him and he flashed me an apologetic look.
“Alright, I'm sorry ” he said, raising his hand in the air as if surrendering. “What's the plan?”
I raked my fingers through my hair, clearly lost in thoughts.
“I know deep down that the attacker is in this city, ” I began.
Kyle's brow furrowed a bit. If my guess was correct, he thought I was insane.
“Ummm. Okay?” He asked, his tone dripping with confusion.
“Don't give me that stare,” I shot him a glare.
“Okay, first question, why would the attacker choose to stay here? The ride from the pack to here is like a five hours ride. ”
I cut him immediately, my voice harsher than I had intended,
“What if the attacker isn't human?” I retorted.
“You think a werewolf can sneak into our pack and kill our women?” Kyle asked, clearly confused.
“Our pack has the strongest armies. No rogue wolf would...”
I slammed my fist on the table, rising on my feet. This made Kyle flinch, taken aback by my outburst.
“Would you shut up and let me talk?” my words sounding more like a command than request.
His lips folded into a thin line, his expression stoic.
“Good.”
“I suspect Sabrina,” I announced, an unnerving silence settling between us, his eyes widening in shock.
“Sabrina? The witch?” he asked.
“The so called mother of darkness?” he asked.
I gave him a nod, though my voice lacked the conviction I needed.
“How possible?” he asked, his curiosity getting the better part of him.
“ I think she's alive. The witches might have used black magic to resurrect her. ”
He stared at me for a while, the air thick with tension.
“You think she's here? ” he asked, clearly not convinced but decided to play along.
"Yes. That explains why the house cleaner was found dead in the apartment. ” I replied, my voice filled with wisdom.
Then the question I dreaded came,
“How's Heather entangled in this?”
I burried my head in my palm, my mind trapped in a chaotic mess.
“She's just after anyone close to us. Maybe she thinks Heather is my Luna,” I mumbled.
Kyle huffed, the chair which he sat on creaking under his weight.
“I met Dan. An old friend of mine,” I began,my voice breaking the silence which hung heavy in the atmosphere.
“What did he say?”he asked.
I let out a sharp exhale, raising my head to meet his.
“He said it was impossible for Sabrina to have risen from the dead. She can only be risen from the dead if the Luna goddess permits. And since she's dangerous, the Luna goddess wouldn't allow such being to exist. ”
“You are sure it was her you saw?” Kyle asked.
My brow furrowed,
“You think I made that up? You think I was hallucinating?” I asked, my face reddening with anger.
He raised his hand in the air, as if surrendering.
“I didn't mean such, Darren. Dan is more conversant with all these mythical beings. Perhaps you need to clear your head? ”
I felt like I was stupid. Why the fuck wouldn't anyone believe me? I fucking saw her. She had attacked my pack.
“Where do you suggest?” I asked, buying his idea. Perhaps I need to clear my head.
He smilrked,
“Carol and Phil are hosting their monthly party. We'd knock ourselves out with drink,” he laughed.
I rolled my eyes, a sigh escaping through my clenched teeth. I shrugged my shoulders, walking to the bathroom for a quick bath. The water ran down my spine and I felt...whole. I slipped into a robe. The shrill ringing of the bed sliced through the air like a sharp blade, a sign that dinner was ready.
I trudged down the stairs, the scent of Italian pasta and sauce filling the air, making my stomach growl.
Heather sat at the other side of the table, savouring the taste of the Italian pasta.
The fork I held hovered around the ceramic plate. I wasn't myself. How was I supposed to enjoy all these goodies when my pack was in chaos? Living with the fear of the unknown? Who would the witches attack next?
“Are you alright, Darren?” Heather asked, her voice calm. For a moment, I felt the confusion which had once engulfed me vanish without a trace, her voice ringing in my head.
My gaze snapped up, my eyes resting on her lips. Suddenly, the urge to see her mourn overwhelmed me.
“I'd love to watch you moan while eating,” I Mumbled, snapping my finger.
As if he read my mind, Kyle stood, the chair scrapping on the floor as he walks into the room to get a dildo.
Maybe watching her mourn would give me the peace of mind I crave.
