The Legacy Of Zoey Casaer

Zoey's POV  (10 years Later)

Three years ago, everything changed. Everyone I knew got their wolves, a monumental rite of passage that marked the transition into adulthood for those of wolf blood. But for me, there was nothing-no surge of power, no howling spirit joining mine. The realization hit like a dagger to the chest: I was wolfless.

I was sitting in front of the mirror while on the edge of my bed and could only see my reflection, candlelight started to flicker. My loose, thick, brown hair had fallen on my face framing it loosely, and my blue eyes gleamed fiercely, as they did when I was young. I became the most powerful witch in the entire region; a position that attracted both reverence and horror.

But it wasn't enough.

My heritage lay heavily on my chest like a weight rapping me around the fingers that I was a witch – a witch whose blood ran thick with power. All charms, all enchantments, all lost sorcery of my forefathers was given to me in trust of the command. And yet, here I sat, hollow in the one thing I craved: my wolf.

Tonight, though, wasn't about lamenting what I lacked. Tonight was about settling a betrayal.

Kiara.

Her name burned on my tongue like poison. My best friend-no, my former best friend. The one person I trusted above all others had turned on me. She called me a "wolfless bitch," her voice dripping with contempt, and spat venom at my cousin Andre, calling him a "mistake" and accusing his father of fathering multiple wolves.

It wasn't just words. It was war.

And tonight, I would end it.

I stood up from the bed and the dark, flowing, black cloak I donned fell behind me as I moved into the room. My last spell-making session had left behind a pungent hint of herbs, which combined with candle wax, filled the air. My spellbook was on the desk, and its ancient parchment seemed to beckon from under the layer of wax of the candle.

"You're sure about this?" Then, a voice came from the darkness.

I looked around to find him, and it was my cousin, Andre, leaning against the door frame with his arms crossed. In the darkness, he had silver eyes which contrast the background, and raven black hair. He seemed quite relaxed but I know that he is stressed just by looking at the tightness of his jaws.

"I can't do anything differently," I replied confidently. "She crossed the line, Andre. She insulted you. She insulted me. Finally, she dared to believe she would not be caught."

'She's an Alpha,' he said to me as he entered the room. ''she will not surrender without putting up a strong fight against her adversary.''

"Good," I told him, the wicked smile was helpless playing on my lips. "I hope she doesn't. I want her to feel every single drop of that power she never thought about."

Andre sighed, running a hand through his hair. "Just don't lose yourself, Zoey. You're stronger than this."

I looked at him, my gaze unwavering. "I'm the heir of darkness, Andre. I've already lost myself."

The moon was bright above me and full and low, as I entered the little glade the only sound was the crunch of leaves beneath my hiking boots. The forest was quiet and it appeared it was waiting for something like what was going to occur next.

Kiara was waiting for me her figure outlined by the light of the full moon. She was tall with full and beautiful golden hair falling over her shoulders like a lion. Her eyes were a shimmering amber as she fixed them upon me as I neared her.

"So you came," she remarked spitting the words through pursed lips.

"The wolfless wonder finally decided to face me."

"I didn't come to exchange insults," I said coolly, stopping a few feet away from her. "I came to end this."

She laughed a sharp, bitter sound. "End this? Zoey, you don't stand a chance. You're nothing without a wolf."

I tilted my head, a slow smile spreading across my face. "You think so?"

Before she could respond, I raised my hand and summoned the darkness. The shadows around us came alive, swirling and twisting like tendrils of smoke. The temperature dropped, and the air grew heavy with the weight of my magic.

Kiara's smug expression faltered, replaced by a flicker of uncertainty. "What are you doing?"

"Showing you why they call me the heir of darkness," I said, my voice low and dangerous.

She shifted into her wolf form in an instant, her golden fur bristling as she bared her teeth. She lunged at me, her powerful body a blur of motion.

But I was faster. I raised my hand and the darkness snaked around her like ropes, I sent her flying to the floor. She snarled and tried to kick but the darkness had anchored her down.

'You thought, you could turn your back on me and go scot-free?.'  I hissed, stepping closer. "You thought I wouldn't make you pay for what you said about my family?"

Her wolf growled, her eyes glowing with defiance.

"I trusted you, Kiara," I continued, my voice rising. "I would have done anything for you. And you threw it all away."

"Because you're weak!" she spat, her voice distorted by her wolf's growl. "You don't belong with us, Zoey. You're a freak!"

The words stung, but they only fueled my rage. I raised my hands, and the shadows tightened around her, forcing her back into her human form. She gasped for breath, her eyes wide with fear.

"Do you feel that, Kiara?" I said, my voice a deadly whisper. "That's the power of someone you underestimated."

Her lips trembled, but she said nothing.

"You're an Alpha," I said, circling her. "But even Alphas can fall. And tonight, you'll learn what it means to cross me."

She tried to lunge at me again, but I was ready. I sparked out, moving her away from me with great force, enough to knock her off her feet. She just landed on the ground roughly and started to cough and gasp.

'I could kill you right now', I told her, looming over her. "But I want you to carefully consider this moment". Remember when the witch you used to know, the one who had no wolves, fought and defeated the Alpha?

Her eyes were filled with contempt, yet, she stayed still.

"This isn't over," she said her voice barely audible but fierce.

"Oh, it is," I said, turning away. "Because after tonight you will never forget I am Zoey Caesar, the heir of darkness."

The shadows began to disappear slowly as I started to move further away from the area of light and into the forest.

I didn't look back.

The End!!!!!
