CHAPTER FORTY-EIGHT
Elena's POV
The air buzzed with force as the silver wolf stood in the doorway, its eyes blazing with intensity. I sensed the change right away. The man, who had been so strong and self-assured, now scared.
"You," he snarled, his voice shaking with rage. "I assumed you had left."
With an intimidating presence, the silver wolf advanced. Nobody moved for a second. With the weight of the impending war, the tension in the room was oppressive.
With a low yet strong snarl, Selene said, "Go." Despite her wounds, she appeared to gain strength from the silver wolf's presence.
The man squinted his eyes. "You have no idea what you're up against."
Selene said, "I know enough," as she transformed into a human, her body poised and prepared. "This is over now."
Stephen shifted next to me, his tone piercing. "You won't take her."
The man's eyes glowed with ill intent as they darted to me. "That child is mine."
The silver wolf let out a growl that was so loud and strong that it shook the walls before Stephen could react. The man winced, his self-assurance faltering.
The man murmured in a frustrated tone, "You have no idea what's coming." "The prophecy is unstoppable."
The silver wolf remained silent. Rather, it sprang forward more quickly than I had ever witnessed. The wolf's claws sliced through the air, piercing the guy with such ferocity that he fell to the ground before he could even respond.
"Return!" When the brawl broke out around us, Selene yelled and dragged me to the chamber's corner.
In order to join the silver wolf in combat, Stephen transformed back into a wolf. Their attacks were persistent and well-coordinated, and they moved with deadly accuracy. Even though the man was strong, the two of them were too strong for him.
With her gaze fixed on the conflict, Selene whispered, "He's losing." "We must continue to apply pressure."
With my heart racing in my chest, I nodded. But I sensed something was off even as I watched. The man was not going to give up. As though he knew something we didn't, he was battling with a desperation I had never witnessed before.
A dark energy surged across the air, and the guy roared suddenly, his body trembling. With a painful thud, the silver wolf crashed into the wall after being flung back.
"Stephen!" Panic rushing through me, I screamed.
In an attempt to recuperate, Stephen slid his wolf form across the floor and avoided the energy surge. The dude wasn't finished, though. His eyes glowed with a lethal power as he stood.
He yelled, "This isn't over!" as his voice reverberated across the room. "I can't be stopped!"
Dark energy crackled in the air around him, and I could feel the pressure rising, as if the air were about to burst.
"He must be stopped!" With desperation in her voice, Selene yelled.
Stephen snarled and lunged at the man once more, but the dark energy rushed forward and struck him so hard that he was knocked down. His body went limp as he collided with the wall.
"Stephen!" I sobbed as I ran toward him, my heart pounding in fear.
The man's icy, ruthless laugh reverberated around the room. "It's too late. I'll have the child.
My hands shaking, I crouched next to Stephen and felt his pulse. He was just about alive. With a desperate tone, I muttered, "We can't let him win."
With eyes blazing with resolve, the silver wolf stumbled to its feet. The dark energy was too powerful, but it surged at the man once again. My gut turned in terror as it around the wolf and tightened like a vice, crushing it.
"No," I muttered, my body shaking with fear.
Selene stepped forward, a tiny light illuminating her body. "We must not allow him to take her."
The man grinned, triumph shining in his eyes. "It's too late. Already, the prophecy is coming to pass. Now, nothing can stop it.
The chamber was suddenly flooded with a dazzling light that sliced like a blade through the darkness. His eyes were wide with surprise when the man flinched.
"What is this?" His voice trembled as he growled.
The area filled with a warmth that appeared to drive back the dark energies as the light became brighter. It was a wave that gave me power and hope that I hadn't experienced in days.
The air hummed with force as the silver wolf stood in the middle of the light, its eyes blazing with intensity. It had evolved into something more than a wolf. Something old.
The man stepped back, his self-assurance faltering. "That isn't feasible."
With its body gleaming with the same light that filled the room, the silver wolf snarled. It suddenly sprang at the man, moving more quickly than I could keep up with it.
The man screamed as the wolf's claws ripped into him, destroying the shadowy force that had encircled him. He stumbled back, his wounds gushing blood.
His voice was angry as he gasped, "This... isn't... over." "What is about to happen cannot be stopped."
The silver wolf remained silent. Once more, it struck with such force and speed that the victim had little time to defend himself. The man roared one more time and collapsed to the ground, dead.
Everything was silent for a while. The air was heavy with the weight of what had just transpired, and the chamber was silent.
"Is it finished?" With a trembling voice, I whispered.
With her gaze fixed on the silver wolf, Selene took a step forward. "For the time being. However, this is not the end.
When the silver wolf transformed back into a person, I recognized her with a start.
The woman was Selene's twin, the same one who had previously saved our lives.
"You," Selene muttered in a startled voice. "How...?"
The woman's eyes glowed softly as she gave a slight smile. "I promised to come back when the time was appropriate."
Beside me, Stephen roused, his voice feeble but resolute. "Now what... what happens?"
As she looked at him, the woman's eyes grew softer. "We are now getting ready for the next step. The actual battle has only just started.
My heart continued to race as I swallowed hard. "What are we going to do?"
Her gaze was solemn as she looked at me. "We assemble our troops. We bring the packs together. We still have an opportunity to halt the prophecy, even though it is already underway.
Despite having a pallid face, Selene had a determined look in her eyes. "Then we begin right now."
The female gave a nod. "Time is of the essence."
However, as the tension started to subside, a roar from afar reverberated through the atmosphere, a sound so strong and primordial that it chilled my blood.
The actual adversary had just woken up.
