# Chapter 156
# Chapter 156
Kira's POV
My heart hammered against my ribs as I sprinted toward Andy. The sight of him stumbling out of the warehouse, face streaked with blood, sent a cold spike of fear through my chest. His left arm hung awkwardly at his side, the sleeve charred and smoking.
"Andy!" I shouted, reaching him just as his knees buckled. I caught him around the waist, nearly falling with him as his weight collapsed against me. "I've got you, I've got you."
His skin was hot to the touch, face smeared with soot and blood from a deep gash across his cheekbone. The left side of his jacket was burned away, revealing angry red skin beneath.
"Jesus, how bad is it?" I asked, easing him down to the ground as another explosion rocked the warehouse behind us. The blast sent vibrations through the pavement, and I instinctively hunched over Andy, shielding him from the shower of debris that followed.
"Not as bad as it looks," he gasped, wincing as I helped him sit up. "Burns heal."
I quickly assessed his injuries – the facial laceration wasn't deep enough to be life-threatening, and the burn on his arm, while painful, wouldn't be fatal for a werewolf with our healing abilities. The relief made me dizzy.
"What the hell happened in there?" I demanded, tearing a strip from the bottom of my shirt to wipe blood from his face.
Before he could answer, Rocco's voice rang out behind me, shouting orders to Vanessa's team. I glanced back to see him directing the wolves into a defensive formation around the perimeter, his movements precise and commanding. Whatever personal issues existed between us, in this moment he was every inch the Alpha leader.
"It's a trap," Andy coughed, grabbing my wrist with his good hand. His eyes were wide with urgency. "Kira, he knew we were coming. All of it – he planned for this."
"The team?" I asked, my stomach dropping.
Andy shook his head, his expression grim. "We got separated. There was some kind of gas..." He paused to cough again. "It wasn't just knockout gas. People started forgetting things, getting confused. Some of them turned on each other."
Rocco approached, crouching beside us. "What about Ethan? Did you see him?"
"Central lab area," Andy nodded toward the warehouse. "He's got some kind of device set up. I saw containers – lots of them."
"Containers of what?" I asked, though I already feared the answer.
"The memory compound," Andy confirmed. "But weaponized, mass-produced. And he's got this distribution system..." Another explosion cut him off, this one larger than before. We all ducked as flaming debris scattered across the parking lot.
I exchanged a look with Rocco. We both knew what this meant.
"We need to get in there," I said, helping Andy to his feet. "We need to find the others, and we need to stop whatever Ethan's doing."
"I'll organize a search and rescue team," Vanessa said, suddenly beside us. Her tactical knowledge surprised me – my mother had apparently been hiding many skills. "We'll need gas masks and communication devices."
Rocco pulled out a tablet, displaying the warehouse blueprint. "Three main entrances here, here, and here," he pointed. "The central lab would be in this area. That's likely where Ethan is operating from."
"I'm coming with you," Andy insisted, struggling to stand straight despite his injuries.
"No, you're not," I said firmly. "You need medical attention."
Andy's face hardened. "Those are my people in there, Kira. I'm responsible for them."
"You'll slow us down," Rocco said bluntly.
"I wasn't asking for your opinion," Andy snapped.
I placed a hand on Andy's uninjured arm. "Andy, please. You're hurt."
Vanessa stepped forward. "He can coordinate with me from the command vehicle. We'll direct the outer perimeter operation while you and Rocco go for the central target."
Andy looked like he wanted to argue further, but instead gave a reluctant nod. "Fine. But you stay in constant communication."
We quickly divided into teams. Rocco distributed gas masks from the SUV's emergency kit while Rebecca remotely fed us the latest satellite imagery of the warehouse interior, identifying hot spots and movement patterns.
"Ready?" Rocco asked as we approached the side entrance, masks secured over our faces.
I nodded, adrenaline sharpening my senses. "Let's go."
The moment we stepped inside, the chaos was overwhelming. Emergency lights flashed, bathing everything in an eerie red glow. Alarms blared throughout the facility, adding to the disorientation. The air was thick with smoke and the acrid smell of chemicals.
We moved cautiously, stepping over broken equipment and avoiding werewolves locked in combat – some were Jennifer's team, others were Ethan's security forces. Most disturbing were those fighting their own allies, clearly affected by the memory compound.
"Stay close," Rocco whispered, though it was unnecessary. I had no intention of separating in this nightmare.
As we approached the central area, we found ourselves overlooking a massive laboratory setup from a metal catwalk. Below us, Ethan's people worked frantically around a large device connected to multiple containers of clear liquid. In the center stood what looked like an aerosol dispersal system – large enough to cover a significant area.
"That's it," I whispered into my communicator. "Rebecca, are you seeing this?"
"Getting the feed now," her voice crackled in my ear. "Based on the configuration... this isn't designed for a building. This is city-scale dispersal."
My blood ran cold. "They're planning to release the memory compound over the entire city."
"All werewolves would be affected," Rocco murmured beside me. "They'd forget who they are, what they stand for..."
"Perfect targets for reprogramming," I finished his thought.
Before we could formulate a plan, the lights in the laboratory suddenly brightened, and all activity below ceased. A slow clapping sound echoed through the space.
"Welcome, welcome!" Ethan's voice boomed through speakers. He stepped onto a raised platform at the center of the lab, looking completely unruffled despite the chaos around us. "I've been expecting you both."
Beside him stood several blank-faced werewolves, including Jennifer. Her eyes were vacant, her posture unnaturally stiff.
"What have you done to them?" I hissed.
Ethan smiled. "Simply shown them a better way. No more conflict, no more divided loyalties. Pure, perfect obedience."
"You're insane," Rocco growled.
"I'm visionary," Ethan corrected. "Your sister understood that, Blackwood. She was brilliant, you know. Her research made all this possible."
My eyes darted between them, noticing how Ethan's comment seemed to strike a nerve with Rocco.
"My sister?" Rocco's voice was dangerously low.
"Oh yes," Ethan nodded. "Lyra's work was revolutionary. She laid the foundation for everything you see here." His smile widened. "Speaking of which..."
A familiar figure stepped out from behind the equipment. My heart dropped as I recognized Kim's body – my twin sister – now moving with Lyra's distinctive mannerisms. Her eyes found Rocco immediately, a sick obsession evident in her gaze.
"Hello, brother dear," Lyra said through Kim's lips. "Aren't you proud of what we've accomplished?"
She gestured to the equipment around them. "This is just the beginning. Once the memory compound is dispersed, we'll have thousands of blank slates ready for... upgrading."
"Upgrading?" I repeated, a chill running through me.
Lyra's smile was predatory. "Why settle for controlling their memories when you can control their very consciousness? My followers are ready to inhabit the bodies of every Alpha in the city." She stepped closer to Ethan. "From there, we take the council, then other cities. A perfect network of perfectly loyal subjects."
"You're talking about mass consciousness transfer," I said, horror dawning on me. "Creating puppet leaders."
"I prefer to think of it as new management," Lyra replied, her eyes never leaving Rocco's face. "But don't worry, brother. I have special plans for you." Her voice dropped to a disturbing intimacy. "We'll finally be together, as we were always meant to be."
"We need to destroy the containers," Rocco whispered to me, disgust evident in his voice.
Lyra tilted her head, as if hearing our private exchange. "Don't bother planning. The system is already activated. The countdown has begun." She spread Kim's arms wide. "Soon, every werewolf in the city will be part of our new order."
Her gaze fixed on Rocco with unsettling intensity. "And you, my beloved brother, will finally be mine... forever."
