Chapter 102

Chapter 102
Elara's POV

I stared at the gloved hand extended toward me.

White leather. Long fingers. Palm up in silent invitation.

My heart was still hammering from the realization. The mission target was Kael. Of all the people in this ballroom, it had to be him.

I should walk away. Make an excuse. Find another approach.

Instead, I placed my hand in his.

His fingers closed around mine immediately. Warm even through the glove. That familiar grip I'd felt before—in the forest, in the alley, on the training grounds.

He led me onto the dance floor without a word. His movements were smooth, confident, like he'd done this a thousand times.

His right hand settled on my waist. Firm. Possessive.

The touch sent electricity straight through me.

I forced myself to breathe normally. To not react. To keep my face neutral behind the mask.

We began moving to the music. A waltz. Of course it was a waltz.

Kael guided me through the first few steps flawlessly. His body was too close. The heat of his palm burned through the thin fabric of my dress.

I needed to think. To figure out my next move.

But all I could focus on was the weight of his hand on my waist and the way he was looking at me through that white mask.

Like he knew exactly who I was. Like this was all part of some game only he understood.

The music swelled around us. Kael guided me through another turn, his hand firm on my waist, keeping me close. Too close.

I could feel the heat of his palm through the thin fabric of my dress. Every step forced me to stay within inches of him.

I needed answers. Now.

I lowered my voice, barely audible over the violin strings. "You knew I was in the Council's agent training?"

His fingers tightened slightly on my waist. "Only found out three days ago."

Three days. My mind raced. That meant...

"But the Council reports directly to the Harrington clan, doesn't it? How could you not know?"

Kael spun me outward, then pulled me back. The movement brought me even closer than before. His jaw was right above my eye level.

"Usually, yes," he said quietly. "But my father never let me touch the inner circle. Kept me out of the real power."

I tilted my head back to look at his masked face. "Until recently?"

"Until I forced a confrontation." His voice dropped lower. "Demanded my share of clan management."

The pieces clicked together. "Because of Victoria. The truth about your brother."

He nodded once. Sharp. Controlled.

"I needed leverage to investigate what really happened. That requires actual authority, not just a title."

We moved through a series of steps I barely registered. My body followed his lead automatically while my brain processed this.

"So you made a deal with your father?"

"I proposed taking over the Council's trainee program." A hint of satisfaction colored his tone. "He thought it was just administrative busywork. Boring paperwork. He agreed."

My heart kicked against my ribs.

"And then you saw my file."

"Elara Grey." He said my name like he was tasting it. "Right there in the candidate roster."

I swallowed hard. "So you have authority over the evaluation results now?"

"Theoretically, yes." His thumb brushed against my waist, just once. "The card you need? It's mine to give."

Oh.

Oh no.

This changed everything.

I took a breath, steadying myself. Fine. If he had the power, I could work with that.

"Then will you help me?" I met his eyes directly. "Just give me the card?"

His eyebrow arched above the mask's edge. I could see it in the shift of his expression.

"After all," I continued, "I helped you reconcile with Victoria. Call it mutual benefit."

Kael's mouth curved into something between amusement and disbelief.

"You're negotiating with me now?" He sounded almost impressed. "When did you learn to bargain, Elara Grey?"

I kept my voice steady. "It's a fair exchange of resources. Isn't it?"

The music shifted into a slower, more intimate section. Kael pulled me closer. My breath caught.

"Alright," he said.

Wait. That easy?

"But," he added, and my stomach dropped, "this is an official Council evaluation. I can't just break protocol without reason."

Of course not.

"You'll need to pay an equivalent price."

I stiffened in his arms. "What price?"

He didn't answer immediately. Just looked at me with those amber eyes, dark and unreadable behind the white mask.

The music built toward a crescendo. Kael suddenly spun me outward in a wide arc. My skirt flared like flower petals. When he pulled me back, I was dizzy.

Not from the spinning.

From the way he was looking at me.

Like I was something he wanted. Something he was considering taking.

What the hell did he want in return?

My pulse hammered in my throat. I couldn't read his expression. Couldn't predict what he was thinking.

That scared me more than I wanted to admit.

I became aware of movement around us. Or rather, the lack of it.

Other couples had drifted toward the edges of the dance floor. Giving us space. Creating a clear circle around us.

We were the center of attention.

The crystal chandelier overhead caught the light, throwing fractured brightness across the marble floor. It felt like a spotlight had found us.

Kael's hand remained steady on my waist. Possessive. His other hand held mine with perfect pressure. Not too tight. Not loose enough to let me pull away.

We were so close I could feel the rise and fall of his chest. The heat radiating from his body.

I caught his scent. Cedar and something sharp like mint. Clean and masculine and completely overwhelming.

My heartbeat was too fast. Way too fast.

I couldn't look away from his eyes. Amber behind the white mask. Fixed on me with an intensity that made my skin prickle.

We turned together, moving through the steps like we'd done this a thousand times. Everything else blurred. The other guests. The ornate columns. The massive windows.

Just him. Just us. Just this impossible moment.

The music began to wind down. Slower. Softer.

Kael guided me through one final turn, then brought me to a stop.

His hand slid from my waist to my lower back. Supporting me as I found my balance.

That's when I felt it.

Heat. Intense and sudden.

My face was burning. My whole body felt too warm, like I'd been standing in direct sunlight for too long.

I blamed the dancing. Physical exertion. That made sense.

Except it didn't feel like normal exercise flush.

Kael steadied me, his hand moving slightly to help me stand upright. His fingers brushed against my bare skin where the dress dipped low in the back.

The contact sent a jolt through my entire nervous system.

Electric. Scorching.

My knees almost buckled.

What the hell was wrong with me?
