Dark Throne

Xavier's POV

In the ethereal glow of the Moon Shrine, I found my brother Kai laid upon the altar, his body and soul shielded by Susan's formidable dark defense barrier. Susan handed me an ancient tome, its pages bearing the incantations necessary for our sacred ritual. Within the confines of this ceremony, only the purity of light magic was required - no other elements had a role to play.

I recited the incantation, my voice resonating in the silence. Extending one hand towards Kai, I could feel power crackling from my palm, the magic of light traversing the short distance to his body. The defensive barrier crumbled under the onslaught of light, and soon my magic established a connection with Kai. Sensing his soul still tethered to his physical form brought me relief; this was indeed a promising sign.

After maintaining the chant, I moved on to the next step of the ritual. I closed my eyes and called out to Kai's spirit, immediately sensing a tug on my essence. It felt as though it had pulled me into an endless Void.

When I reopened my eyes, flickering fires surrounded me, my body seated upon a cold, black cobblestone. Kai sat across from me, enthroned in an imposing seat of darkness, his crown and eyes mirroring the obsidian hue of his surroundings. He seemed different, absent of his usual liveliness.

"Kai," I said, my voice filled with concern. He tilted his head, peering at me as if struggling to remember who I was. "Do you not remember your own brother?" I asked, my voice tinged with despair.

"Brother," Kai echoed, his voice unnerving, as if possessed. "I am no longer your brother. I am now the King of Darkness," he announced, his words chilling me to my core.

"Kai, you need to snap out of this and go home," I implored. I tried to maintain a calm demeanor, but my Alpha genes seeped through, lending an authoritative tone to my plea. Unfortunately, this wasn't the right approach. Kai's face darkened, a frown etching itself across his features.

"How dare you reprimand me, knowing whom you're addressing!" he snapped, a palpable layer of annoyance tainting his words.

"Kai, please understand," I implored, "you're being manipulated to stay here. Don't you miss Leia?" Recognition seemed to flicker in Kai's eyes at mentioning her name, but it was fleeting, snuffed out as if by an unseen force tugging at his consciousness.

"Who is Leia, and why should I care about her?" he questioned dismissively.

"You dense fool, Leia is your mate! And you are my brother, Kai. Can't you snap out of this and come home?" I retorted, exasperation creeping into my voice.

"I refuse to abandon this throne," he insisted, his eyes glazed with confusion. "This darkness needs me. I am destined to rule it, and I couldn't care less about this place you're trying to drag me back to."

I took a deep breath, attempting to keep my composure. "I am here to bring you home, Kai. You are the Alpha of the Bluewood Pack, and Leia is your mate." Despite my best efforts, I could feel my patience wearing thin. A force seemed to be goading me, pushing me to the edge, and I was confident it was the omnipresent dark power. Its insidious influence made it hard for me to maintain control, stoking my anger and causing further rifts between Kai and me.

Suddenly, Kai rose from his dark throne, the distance between us rapidly diminishing. His gaze bore into mine, harbouring none of the brotherly affection I was so familiar with. "I've told you already, I'm not leaving," he growled, his teeth bared in a threatening snarl. "Now, get lost before I drain that precious light magic from you."

"I refuse to leave without you, Kai," I retorted, my resolve firm. "Feel free to attempt draining my light magic. I'll fight you if that's what it takes to bring you back to your senses!" Kai swung at me, his fist landing a punch on my jawline. Despite the surprise and pain, I was ready when he lunged again, side-stepping him and attempting a counter-tackle. However, Kai's strength overpowered mine, freeing him from my grip.

"Why can't you remember anything, Kai?" I snarled in frustration, my fist flying towards his face. Kai reacted like a cornered animal, retaliating with his dark magic. I barely dodged his attack, the miss creating a sizable crater in the cobblestone ground. The battlefield became a chaotic dance of light and dark energies, Kai persistently charging with dark magic. At the same time, I retaliated with the purity of light, causing him to recoil in pain.

"You will perish by my hand," Kai growled ominously, a dark wave of magic pulsing towards me. The impact caused intense pain, but I stubbornly pushed it away, continuing to throw strikes at Kai. To his surprise, he couldn't land a blow on me, failing to comprehend his repeated failures. But I understood why - Kai, my brother, was still in there somewhere, struggling beneath the oppressive shroud of dark power. His body might have been overtaken by darkness, but a part of him was still fighting, resisting the influence, preventing him from striking me down. I knew I had to continue, for him and us, despite the monumental struggle this rescue mission had become.

This time, I faced Kai with a clear intent to kill. I dodged as his magic lashed out, causing his attack to collide with the wall. Immediately, a plume of fire ignited and surged toward me. Anticipating this, I hastily constructed a defensive barrier and shifted into my wolf form, harnessing my full power.

Emboldened by my transformation, I counterattacked, slamming Kai with the force of pure light energy. He didn't reciprocate by shifting into his wolf form, to my surprise. Puzzled, I questioned why he didn't mirror my transformation - all shifters, from my knowledge, feel an irresistible urge to shift in response to an attacker doing the same.

As the fight wore on, Kai's resolve started to falter. I could see it in his eyes; he was losing himself. Realizing that continuing the battle was a waste of precious escape time, I knew what to do. I intended to bind him with my light magic and summon my pack by uttering our name, which would open the vortex needed for my escape.

Returning to my human form, I extended my right hand. My magic coalesced into bright, yellow chains that snaked towards Kai, clamping onto him. He groaned in pain, squirming, trying to break free from my hold. Suddenly, a black flame swirled around Kai, threatening to bolster his power. If that happened, I'd be trapped in this dark realm with Kai, where he could potentially kill me.

With urgency coursing through my veins, I summoned the vortex before that could happen. A radiant light burst forth as the vortex opened. Blinking against its brilliance, I found myself back in the shrine. My gaze fell upon Kai's body, anxiety gnawing at me. Had I successfully completed my mission?
