Chapter 46 Chapter 46
Chapter 46 Chapter 46
ASHER’S POV
“We’ve gathered everyone in the safe house. You don’t have to worry—it’s secure. No one’s getting in,” Michael said, his voice steady with confidence.
“Good,” I replied, keeping my tone even. “I can’t risk anyone getting hurt.”
But as the silence settled between us, my mind began to drift. This fight shouldn’t drag on. It can’t. Zachary won’t win. I’d rather die on the battlefield than watch him get what he wants.
Michael must’ve noticed the change in my expression. “What are you thinking about, Asher?” he asked, concern threading through his words. “Don’t stress yourself, okay? We’re going to win. I can feel it.”
I stood from the edge of the chair, the weight of my thoughts too heavy to stay seated. I crossed the room slowly, stopping just in front of him.
“I can’t let Zachary get away with this,” I murmured, my voice low. “But if I’m being honest… I’m scared.”
“What?” he blinked in disbelief. “You? You’re the strongest Alpha alive. People tremble when they hear your name—and you’re scared?”
I let out a sigh, stepping past him. My gaze drifted toward the rain-streaked window, eyes tracing the shadows outside.
“My whole life,” I began, voice quiet, “all I’ve ever known is revenge. Hatred lived in my chest like a second heartbeat. But ever since I met Isabella… I want peace. For once, I want peace.”
I turned to look at him. A small, weary smile played on my lips.
Michael’s brows furrowed. “Wait—are you saying you don’t want to fight?”
I shook my head. “No. I’ll never back down from a fight. I may love her, but that doesn’t make me weak. I just want this to be the last fight I ever have to survive. Once it’s over, I want to let go of everything—of all the hate I’ve carried for so long.”
Michael stared at me like he didn’t recognize me anymore.
“Hey, what the hell is wrong with you?” he said, stepping closer, jabbing a finger against my forehead. “Is this really the same Asher I know?”
I smirked, brushing his hand away. “I’m just tired, Michael. Tired of living like I have nothing to lose.”
“I get that,” he muttered, then narrowed his eyes. “But you do realize this is Zach we’re talking about? He’s not going to hear a damn thing you say. He wants Isabella back, and unless you’re planning to give her to him—”
“I’m not,” I cut in sharply, the fire returning to my voice. “I’ll never let him have Isabella.”
“Exactly, Asher. So debunk the idea of ever settling with Zach—it’s useless at this point,” Micheal said, his voice firm, laced with concern.
If only he knew why I was really doing this. That dream… it still haunts me. I don’t want it to become reality. The thought of someone getting hurt because of me makes my chest tighten. No matter how much I try to convince myself otherwise, the fear lingers. If anyone else dies because of me, I don’t know if I’ll survive it—mentally or emotionally.
“You’re right, Micheal,” I said with a faint smile, trying to shake the heaviness off. “I don’t even know what I was thinking. Thanks for snapping me out of it.”
He clapped a hand against my back, steady and reassuring.
“That’s why I’m your best friend,” he said with a small grin, his eyes serious. “Love’s a beautiful thing, Asher, but you can’t let it cloud your judgment. The only way to protect the one you love is to face this head-on.”
He straightened, already shifting into battle-ready mode. “Let’s go. We need to prepare. I’ll be right beside you. And I promise—I won’t let you lose.”
I smiled again, this time a little deeper. One of these days, I’ll tell him just how much his loyalty means to me. But for now, I nod and follow. The storm is coming—and I won’t face it alone.
The sky split with a flash of blinding white lightning, a jagged crack that lit up the twisted silhouettes of dead trees. Thunder boomed overhead, shaking the heavens as cold rain poured down in thick sheets, soaking the forest and turning the dirt beneath our boots into sucking, treacherous mud. I stood at the front of my pack—my heart steady, my breath slow—listening.
Then we heard it. A long, echoing howl that cut through the storm like a knife.
“They’re here!” Michael called out, his voice sharp with urgency.
I closed my eyes, drawing a deep breath. When I opened them again, the crimson glow of my wolf’s fury bled into my vision. The scent of the enemy reached us, thick and bitter like smoke on the wind. My fists clenched tighter with every step they took toward us.
And then—they appeared. Figures emerging from the wall of rain, moving like shadows through the storm. Zachary led the front, his pack fanned out behind him, unmoving, disciplined, like wolves poised for blood.
The downpour intensified, lightning flashing above us again. I raised my head and howled—deep, raw, and commanding. The sound rippled across the field like a war cry. My pack responded instantly, lifting their voices in perfect harmony with mine. It wasn’t just noise—it was a statement.
We are not afraid.
This is our land.
Zachary smirked as he stepped forward, the silver in his eyes catching the light for a moment. Rain slid down his face, but he stood tall, radiating arrogance.
“You know,” he said, his voice almost lost in the thunder, “I never imagined it would come to this, Asher. I thought that when you returned, maybe we could be brothers. Maybe we could have something… real. But now I see it clearly—we were never meant to coexist. We were born to destroy each other.”
I scoffed, stepping forward, the mud squelching under my boots. My voice was low and sharp.
“You brought this fight to me, Zachary. Not the other way around. Funny, isn’t it? I once dreamed of nothing but killing you—and your mother.”
I took a slow, deliberate breath, letting my anger simmer rather than explode.
“But I’ll give you one chance,” I growled. “One. Leave my territory now… and I might spare your life.”
Zachary let out a cold, humorless chuckle, brushing wet strands of hair from his face. “You really think that scares me, Asher?”
My jaw tightened.
“I’m only here to take what belongs to me,” he continued, stepping closer. “Give me Isabella, and maybe we don’t have to do this. No blood. No bodies. Just her.”
That smug tone… it made my skin crawl.
“I would rather die than let you touch her,” I snapped, my voice like thunder—fierce, unrelenting.
And just like that, his smile vanished. His eyes narrowed.
“Then you’ll get what you wish for!” Zachary snarled. He threw back his head and let out a deep, feral howl that echoed through the forest. His pack responded instantly, their voices rising in unison, filling the air with the chilling promise of violence.
I smirked. “Let’s go!” I howled back, my voice sharp and commanding, and lunged forward into the chaos.
My pack charged with me, a wall of fury and teeth crashing into Zachary’s wolves. The storm roared above, and the forest floor trembled under the pounding of feet and the weight of power unleashed.
The first wolf came at me—too slow. I slammed into him with brutal force, sending his body flying through the air like a ragdoll. A smirk curled on my lips. The battle had truly begun.
Fists swung, claws tore, bodies collided with bone-shattering intensity. I carved my path forward, each strike designed to clear the way to my true target—Zachary. He, too, surged toward me, scattering anyone foolish enough to cross him.
And then—we met.
“I’ll kill you!” he roared, charging with a wild punch.
I caught his arm mid-air, twisting it just enough to throw him off balance, and drove my fist into his jaw with bone-rattling force. He staggered back a few paces, but recovered quickly, snarling as he lashed out again—this time landing a solid punch to my side.
Pain flashed through me, but I didn’t flinch. I blocked the next blow, then ducked low and drove my shoulder into his gut. He grunted, and before he could recover, I sank my fangs into his shoulder, tearing flesh. He cried out, staggering back as blood mixed with rain on his skin.
I rose to my full height, chest heaving, eyes glowing with fury.
“All that talk… I expected more from you,” I said with a smirk. “Turns out, you’re still just as weak.”
He spat blood onto the muddy ground and wiped his mouth with the back of his hand. “You have no idea what’s coming for you.”
Then—everything shifted.
A scream tore through the storm
The sound sliced through the chaos like a blade. Every wolf froze. My heart stopped for a second.
And then—I smelled it.
Smoke. Fire.
I turned sharply, and my eyes widened in horror. Flames danced in the distance, growing, consuming, climbing the trees like demons set loose. The scent of burning wood and flesh filled the air.
“My people…” I breathed, voice trembling.
Zachary let out a chilling laugh, one that echoed louder than the thunder overhead. “This is just the beginning, Asher.”
My chest tightened, and dread sank into my bones.
This can’t be happening.
The dream I feared—it was coming true.
