Chapter 60 A Bond Forged in Eclipse
Chapter 60 A Bond Forged in Eclipse
Erick’s POV
Deborah's heartbeat was weak under Erick's hand. Each slow beat felt like the start of something terrible.
"No." The word burst from him, raw and clear. "No, you don't get to leave me. Not now. Not ever."
Silver light flashed across her skin like fading stars. Her special powers were using her up from the inside. The prophecy had warned about this: when different bloodlines mixed, it created something too strong for one person.
Her body was burning itself out, unable to handle how powerful she had become.
Erick held her tighter. His golden light flared up to try and protect her, but it wasn't enough. Nothing was enough. Her head fell against his shoulder. Her lips were parted, and her shallow breaths came slower and slower.
"Stay with me," he whispered against her temple, his voice cracking. "Deborah, please. I need you to stay."
Around them, the battlefield went quiet. The enemies had left, but winning felt empty. What did any of it matter if she died in his arms?
Then, suddenly, he remembered something.
Elder Thorne, an old man, had spread ancient scrolls across the table. He looked serious.
"There is one ritual, forbidden for ages.
The Eclipse Bond. When the first hybrids appeared, some found they could make each other's powers stable by joining their souls completely. But the cost..."
"What cost?" Erick had asked.
"Everything. Both people must give all of themselves, no hidden parts, no secrets. If either holds back even a little, both die. And if it works, they are joined forever.
One cannot live without the other. It's like a loving prison, Erick. A cage made of devotion."
At the time, Erick had just thought it was an interesting story. Now, with Deborah dying, it was his only hope.
"The Eclipse Bond," he breathed. His mind quickly went over what the ritual needed. Old words.
Touching over the heart. And being completely open and scared, showing her every secret, every fear, every hope he'd had since they met.
It could kill them both. The scrolls had been clear. If he hesitated, if any part of him fought the joining, the ritual would destroy them like fire.
But watching her life fade, feeling her heart get weaker, Erick knew he'd already decided. He decided weeks ago, maybe months, maybe even the first day she faced him with courage and wouldn't give up.
"I've got you," he said softly. He held her close, her head on his arm. "I've got you, and I won't let go."
With his other hand, he put his palm flat on her chest, right over her heart. Her skin was burning hot. Her power moved wildly under it, like a trapped storm. His own golden light rose to meet it.
For a moment, the two powers clashed gold against silver, sun against moon.
Erick closed his eyes and tried to recall the words from his memory. Sounds older than modern language, words that are connected to the basic magic in their blood.
"Nox et lux, umbra et flamma." Night and light, shadow and flame. His voice became strong as the ancient chant took over. "Duo facti unum, animae coniunctae in aeternum." Two made one, souls joined for eternity.
The air around them began to shimmer. Reality itself seemed to bend for what he was trying to do. This was old, basic magic, the kind that didn't ask permission but took a huge sacrifice.
"Te video," Erick continued. His hand warmed against her chest as his power started to go into her. "Omnia quae es, omnia quae times, omnia quae amas." I see you. All that you are, all that you fear, all that you love.
The hard part came next. The part that meant he had to truly mean it.
Erick let go of every defense he'd ever built. Every wall he'd put up to protect himself from pain, from loss, from the heavy weight of being a leader, he let them fall apart. His power flowed freely into Deborah.
But more than that, he flowed into her. His memories, his feelings, his whole soul were open.
She would see everything. The boy who saw his mother die and promised never to feel helpless again. The young man who trained until his hands hurt, wanting to be strong enough to protect his loved ones.
The leader who couldn't sleep, scared of making a bad choice. The man who fell in love with a strong, smart woman and didn't know how to tell her she was everything to him.
No secrets. No hidden parts. Just the plain truth.
The moment he was completely open, something changed. Deborah's silver light shot up, meeting his gold in the middle.
Suddenly, he could feel her. Not just her presence through their bond, but who she really was, every thought, every memory, every part of her heart she kept hidden.
Her loneliness. Her strong will. Her fear of being too much, too strong, too different. And under it all, a powerful love that surprised him, love for him, for their strong connection, for the future they might have if they lived.
"I'm here," he thought to her, like a comforting shield. "I'm here, and I won't let go."
What are you? She suddenly understood, then panicked. No. Erick, no. If this doesn't work.
It will work. He drew her in, their souls connecting like holding hands. We're soulmates, Deborah. Real soulmates.
I've known it since I first saw you. This connection is real.
You could die.
Then we die together. He said it without fear, just knowing it was true. I can't live in a world without you.
He felt her sob, felt her feelings of love, fear, and hope rush through their connection. She held onto his mind, and he held her with all his might.
I love you, she thought to him. Oh, Erick, I love you so much.
I know. He pushed deeper into their connection, giving her more of himself, his strength, his life. I've loved you forever. My soul knew yours before we even met.
The magic grew stronger. Erick's body shook from the effort as more of his spirit went into Deborah, and hers flowed into him. The lines between them faded, then completely disappeared.
He couldn't tell where he stopped and she started.
Her memories flashed through his mind: childhood fears, teenage hopes, when she first changed.
His memories opened up to her, too; every secret, every old hurt, every moment of his long life was shown.
They were completely open. Completely trusting.
Their hearts beat as one. Their powers swirled together, gold and silver making a bright, pulsing eclipse that looked beautiful and strange.
Erick felt his inner wolf join with her inner wolf, felt their animal spirits recognize each other and settle into perfect peace.
Almost there, he managed, though it was hard to speak. The magic was at its strongest, the point of no turning back. Stay with me, love. Just a bit longer.
Deborah's mind lit up brighter, not fading anymore but getting stronger. It was fed by his life energy and made stable by their joining connection.
He felt her power calm, the wild energy becoming strong and controlled as it found its balance in him.
"Aeternum vinculum. Duae animae, unum cor."
Eternal bond. Two souls, one heart.
The last words left his mouth, and the world exploded.
Silver and gold light burst around them, incredibly bright and powerful, making everything seem to break apart. Erick felt his soul click into place with Deborah's.
He felt their special 'Eclipse Bond' finish, with a force that shook the ground under them.
Their powers fully joined, a perfect mix of shadow and flame, dark and light. It made something completely new.
The light got even brighter, taking over everything. Erick's last thought before everything went white was a hope that they had made it, that their love was strong enough, that when the light cleared, they would still be.
