Chapter 58 Healing Hearts
Chapter 58 Healing Hearts
Deborah’s POV
She still felt it, a flutter, a hint of something new inside her. Deborah put her hand on her lower stomach as she stood by the window of their room, watching the sunset turn the sky amber and rose. The peace talks had ended hours ago, but she wasn't thinking about politics or treaties.
She should tell him. Erick deserved to know about this possibility, this hope.
But what if she was wrong? What if it was just the aftermath of their difficult journey together, some leftover magic settling? The disappointment in his eyes if she told him too soon would be unbearable. No, it was better to wait. Better to be sure before she said anything that could change everything.
"You're thinking too loudly."
Erick's voice, warm and teasing, pulled her out of her thoughts. She turned to see him leaning against the doorframe of their bedroom, his shirt unlaced, dark hair still damp from his bath. Seeing him relaxed, open, hers still took her breath away.
"Am I?" She smiled, taking her hand from her stomach. "Maybe you're just listening too closely."
He crossed the room quickly, his presence surrounding her. When his arms went around her waist, she leaned into him, breathing in his scent, pine and smoke and something that was just Erick.
"I can't help it," he whispered against her hair. "You're the only voice I want to hear."
Their bond hummed between them, that silver-and-gold thread that had been so fragile, often flickering and fading. But now it felt different. Stronger. Like their victory today had made something deep between them even stronger.
"Do you remember," Deborah said softly, "when you told me you were cursed? That everyone you loved was meant to suffer?"
His body tensed against hers. "I remember."
"Do you still believe that?"
Erick’s POV
The question was there between them, and Erick really thought about it for the first time in weeks. Did he still believe he was cursed? That his love was bad news?
He turned Deborah in his arms, needing to see her face. Her silver-amber eyes showed no judgment, only real curiosity and a deep kindness that always melted him.
"No," he said finally, the word feeling like a big admission. "I don't."
"What changed?"
You, he wanted to say. Everything changed because of you.
But the words felt too small, too simple for how much she'd changed his world. So instead, he held her face in his hands, his thumbs running along her cheekbones.
"You showed me that love isn't a curse, it's a choice," he said. "Every day, you choose me. Even when I was lost in darkness, even when our connection was tough, even when I gave you every reason to leave. You stayed."
Tears filled her eyes, making them shine in the dim light. "You made it easy to stay."
"Liar." He smiled, but his voice was thick. "I made it impossible. I was sure I'd mess you up, that my touch would ruin everything good about you.
But you..." He shook his head.
"You're stronger than any curse, Deborah. You took all my broken parts and somehow made me whole."
"You weren't broken," she whispered strongly. "You were hurt. There's a difference."
"Then you healed me." He pressed his forehead to hers, closing his eyes. "You healed hurts I didn't even know I had. You made me believe I deserved happiness. Deserved you."
Their bond pulsed, and Erick felt something shift, a big change, like everything was finally clicking into place. The silver part of him and the gold part of her started weaving together, tighter and more lasting than before.
"Erick," Deborah gasped, clearly feeling it too. "The bond..."
"I know." He opened his eyes, watching faint light shimmer between them, visible even without his wolf vision. "I feel it."
Deborah’s POV
She felt something really strong. It wasn't pain, just super intense, like every part of her body suddenly came alive. Their special bond, which had been off and on for so long, was getting solid. Getting steady.
The silver and gold threads weren't just touching anymore; they were joining, braiding together in a way that felt old and meant to be.
"It's forever now," Deborah whispered, understanding. "It won't disappear. It won't get weaker."
"Never again." Erick's voice was rough with feeling. "You're mine, and I'm yours, and nothing can change that."
She leaned back to really look at him, this man who changed her, just like she changed him. "You fixed me, too, you know."
He frowned. "How? You weren't broken."
"Wasn't I?" She laughed, but it came out shaky. "I spent my whole life building walls, Erick. After my mom died, after my dad remarried, and I felt invisible at home, I learned that showing feelings was a weakness. Letting people in just gave them a way to hurt me."
She put her hand on his heart, feeling it beat steadily. "I was so scared of being left again that I never let anyone get close enough to stay. I was alone, and I told myself I liked it that way."
"And now?" He put his hand over hers, holding it to his chest.
"Now I know that walls don't protect you, they just make you lonely." She smiled through the tears on her face. "You taught me that love isn't about control or being safe. It's about trust. About choosing to be open with someone and believing they'll respect that."
"Deborah..."
"You made me brave," she went on, wanting him to understand. "You saw past all my defenses and loved me anyway. Not just ignoring my past hurts, but including them. You made me believe I deserved to be chosen. To be kept."
Erick made a low sound and pulled her close, his face in her neck. She felt something wet and realized he was crying, this strong leader who fought armies and old evils, now crying because of her words.
"I will always choose you," he said, his voice rough. "Every day, every moment, for the rest of my life. You are my heart, Deborah. My home. My everything."
The bond between them glowed, bright and strong, and Deborah gasped as she felt it click into place. The silver and gold were no longer separate, but one strong, unbreakable, forever, complete.
Erick’s POV
Everything stopped as their bond formed. Erick felt a calm he'd never known, strong and steady. This was true mating. It wasn't just magic or instinct. It was a deep feeling that he belonged, that he had found his person in her.
“I love you,” he said, because he had to say it. “More than I can say.”
“I love you too.” Deborah smiled brightly. She looked strong and beautiful, almost too good to be true. “My mate. My anchor. My...”
A sharp knock cut her off. They both turned, not wanting to lose the moment.
“Alpha,” Marcus’s voice said from the other side of the door. He was polite but sounded like he was in a hurry. “The Council wants you in the main room. All the leaders and elders are there.”
Deborah looked at Erick, just as curious as he was. “Now?”
“They say it’s important. It’s a formal meeting.”
Deborah straightened up. She changed from soft to serious in a second, becoming the Alpha. Still, she reached for Erick’s hand and held it to comfort him.
“Together,” she said.
“Always,” he replied.
They got dressed quickly in their special clothes.
Erick watched as Deborah pinned her hair up, showing her pretty neck and her clear mark. His wolf felt proud. He also felt her thoughts through their bond, warm and close.
The walk to the Council room felt important, and something felt unsaid. Guards walked behind them, but Erick didn't really see them.
He only looked at Deborah, her strength, how she carried herself, and their future together.
The big doors to the room were open. Inside, the room was full. Every leader from the peace talks was there, and all the Elders. Even the ones who didn't like her ruling or their bond before.
The room felt tense with waiting as Deborah, the Alpha, walked in with Erick next to her.
Deborah’s POV
Deborah's heart thumped as they walked into the Grand Council room. The room was amazing. It had high, arched ceilings and old tapestries on the walls. Each tapestry showed its brutal and great history. But the fancy look wasn't what surprised her.
It was the people gathered there.
Hundreds of eyes looked at them: Alphas, Betas, Elders, and messengers from all the big packs. A heavy, old power filled the room. It should have made her feel small. But Erick held her hand, and their connection felt alive, so Deborah felt strong.
They walked down the middle aisle. Their steps echoed in the suddenly quiet room. At the end, the High Elder waited on a raised platform. He looked old and didn't show any feelings.
When they got to the steps, Erick moved, ready to stand a bit behind her. But before he could, the High Elder raised his hand.
“Both of you,” he said, his voice clear in the room. “Whatever we decide here affects you both the same.”
Deborah looked at Erick. A warm, strong feeling passed between them. Together, they walked up to the platform, Alpha and mate, together.
The High Elder watched them for a while. Deborah felt a hint of approval in his old eyes. Finally, he turned to face the people.
“We are at a turning point,” he said. “We've seen a bond that survived things that should have broken it. A partnership that made bad into good. An Alpha who didn't rule with fear, but with sacrifice, fairness, and true care for her people.”
A soft sound went through the room, then it became quiet again.
“The old ways don't work anymore,” the High Elder went on. “A new time starts today – built on working together, not forcing others. On being united, not having strict ranks. On sharing strength, not keeping it.”
He turned back to Deborah. His look was serious, and it made her catch her breath.
“Alpha Deborah of Ravenswood,” he said seriously. “You've earned something no ruler before you was just given – the full loyalty of every pack, every Elder, every wolf here.”
Then, everyone was shocked when the High Elder knelt on one knee and bowed his head.
“We accept you,” he said, his voice very clear and final. “Alpha Deborah of Ravenswood, true leader of the Northern Realm – and Erick, her real partner and chosen equal.”
For a moment, everything stopped.
Then it happened.
Like a wave, every Alpha, Elder, leader, and warrior in the room knelt. Their power bowed not from fear, but because they chose to. The sound filled the hall like far-off thunder.
Deborah almost fell.
Erick held her hand tighter, keeping her steady. Through their connection, she felt his wonder, his pride, his strong loyalty not to a name, but to her. To what they represented together.
“Stand up,” Deborah said, her Alpha voice calm, steady, and clear. It filled the room easily. “All of you, stand up. We don't rule by making you bow, but by trust. By working together. By loyalty given freely.”
Slowly, the people stood. The deep respect in their eyes stayed, now stronger, earned, and unbreakable.
This was the moment everything changed. The old way broke, and something stronger took its place.
As Deborah stood there, Alpha, the leader, making the future with Erick next to her and their connection shining bright, she felt it again.
That quiet flutter. That secret sign of new life.
Soon, she promised herself. Soon she would tell him.
For now, this was enough.
The Grand Council had bowed.
The new system was set.
And their future stretched out before them, bright, unknown, and full of amazing promise.
