Chapter 51 The Final Stand

Chapter 51 The Final Stand
Erick’s POV

The devastating energy should have annihilated us. It ought to have reduced us to dust, dispersed us across realms, and disintegrated us completely.

Instead, we emerged from it changed.

I felt it the instant the darkness receded: the connection between Deborah and me had altered, becoming profound. What had been a subtle link was now a vibrant force, pulsating with energy that made my skin tingle and my pulse quicken.

I could feel her pulse as though it were mine, perceive her every breath, every fleeting sentiment that crossed her mind.

"Erick." Her voice was steady, yet I sensed an undercurrent of apprehension through our link. "Look."

Ravenswood was perishing.

The Void was no longer merely seeping into our dimension; it was consuming it. The sky had cracked like shattered glass, exposing the turbulent gloom beyond.

Structures contorted unnaturally, their bases distorting as existence itself warped and collapsed.

The air carried the tang of copper and ozone, and something else, something primordial and sinister that made a deep, primal part of me flinch in horror.

And everywhere, without exception, were Void Hunters.

They surged through the rifts in reality like a horde of dark entities, their blank visages turning toward us with ominous intent.

Many dozens of them, perhaps even more. Their arrival caused the air to grow frigid, frost spreading across the ground in intricate icy designs that possessed a disturbing allure.

"Together," Deborah stated, and I felt her power surge to life alongside mine. A blend of luminous and golden hues, merging perfectly, inseparable.

"Always," I vowed, and meant it with my entire essence.

The initial assault struck us like an immense wave of shadows.

Deborah’s POV

The devastating energy should have destroyed us completely.

Instead, we emerged from it changed.

I felt it the moment the darkness cleared: the connection between Deborah and me had changed deeply. What was once a subtle link was now a strong force, pulsing with energy that made my skin tingle and my pulse quicken.

I could feel her pulse as if it were my own, and sense her every breath and thought.

"Erick." Her voice was steady, but I felt her fear through our link. "Look."

Ravenswood was dying.

The Void was no longer just seeping into our dimension; it was consuming it. The sky had cracked like shattered glass, showing the darkness beyond.

Buildings twisted unnaturally, their bases distorting as reality itself warped and collapsed.

The air smelled of copper and ozone, and something else, something ancient and evil that made me flinch in horror.

And everywhere were Void Hunters.

They poured through the rifts in reality like a horde of dark creatures, their blank faces turning toward us with a clear threat.

Dozens of them, maybe more. Their arrival made the air cold, and frost spread across the ground in intricate, disturbing icy patterns.

"Together," Deborah said, and I felt her power surge to life with mine. It was a blend of bright golden light, merging perfectly.

"Always," I vowed, and meant it completely.

The first attack hit us like a huge wave of shadows.

Erick’s POV

The Void was changing Ravenswood in ways I couldn't comprehend.

I saw a building fold in on itself like origami. Its windows turned into doors, and its doors into windows, as its whole structure reshaped itself with a strange geometry that was painful to watch.

The street beneath our feet rippled like water, solid one moment and liquid the next.

Gravity shifted randomly. I felt myself grow lighter, then heavier, then lighter again, as if the laws of physics were breaking down.

Through it all, Deborah was my anchor.

I felt her presence through our bond like a lifeline, steady and sure, even as the world collapsed around us. When a dimensional tear opened directly beneath my feet, she was there.

Her magic wrapped around me, pulling me back before I could fall into the darkness beyond.

"Thanks," I gasped. I felt her amusement through our connection, despite the dangerous situation.

"Don't mention it. You've saved me at least three times in the last five minutes."

"Four," I corrected, dispatching another Void Hunter with a slash of golden light. "But who's counting?"

Her laugh was breathless but genuine, and it made me feel warm inside even as we fought for our lives. This was what I'd been missing all those years I'd kept her distant: this partnership, this perfect teamwork, this feeling of being whole.

A roar split the air, so loud and terrible it made the broken sky shake.

Malachai emerged from a tear in reality itself, looking both magnificent and monstrous. His form had changed, twisted by the Void's influence until he was more shadow than substance.

His eyes burned with purple fire, and when he smiled, I saw too many teeth in a mouth that was too wide.

"You survived the eclipse flame," he said, his voice echoing from multiple directions at once. "Impressive. But ultimately pointless."

He raised his hands, and the Void Hunters fell back, forming a circle around us. They were trapping us.

Deborah’s POV

I'd never been more scared in my life.

Not because of Malachai, even though he was scary enough with his twisted body and eyes that burned with stolen power. Not because of the Void Hunters around us, or how reality was literally falling apart.

I was scared because I could feel Erick's determination through our bond, and I knew he was preparing to do something reckless.

"Don't," I whispered, reaching for his hand. "Whatever you're thinking, don't."

His fingers intertwined with mine, and the touch sent a jolt of power through both of us. Silver and gold mixed, until I couldn't tell where my magic ended and his began.

"I'm not thinking anything," he said softly. "Except that I love you, and I'm not letting him hurt you."

His words should have made me happy. Instead, they felt like a goodbye, and that scared me more than anything else.

"Erick..."

"Together," he cut in, squeezing my hand. "We do this together. No heroic sacrifices. No last stands. We fight as one, and we win as one."

I wanted to believe him. God, I wanted to believe him so badly.

"Together," I said, and channeled all my magic into our joined hands.

The explosion of power was blinding. Silver and gold burst from our clasped hands like a supernova, covering the Void Hunters in a wave of pure light.

They shrieked and dissolved, their bodies unable to handle our combined magic.

Malachai stumbled back, his twisted face contorting in anger and pain.

"Impossible," he snarled. "You're just a wolf and a witch. You can't."

"We're more than that," Erick said, and I felt his complete certainty through our bond. "We're everything you'll never understand."
We moved as one, our magic flowing between us in perfect sync.

Every spell I cast, he made stronger. Every attack he launched, I guided. We were like one being with two bodies, fighting with a coordination that was more than just teamwork.

For a moment, I thought we might actually win.

Erick’s POV

Malachai was stronger than I'd anticipated.

Even wounded and facing our combined magic, he fought with desperation. The Void reacted to his rage, and reality warped around him, making me dizzy and sick.

But we were winning. Slowly, painfully, we were driving him back.

I felt Deborah's exhaustion through our bond. Her magic was wavering as she pushed herself too hard. My strength was also fading, and my wolf was getting tired from constantly shifting forms and channeling power.

But we were winning.

"It's over, Malachai," I said, and meant it. "Surrender, and maybe..."

He laughed. It was a terrible, broken sound that made the fractured sky shake.

"Over?" he repeated. "Oh, Erick. It's only just beginning."

His hand shot out very fast. I felt Deborah's warning scream through our bond just a moment too late.
Pain exploded through my chest.

I looked down, feeling a strange curiosity, and saw Malachai's clawed hand in my chest. Purple Void magic spread from the wound like poison, corrupting everything.

My wolf howled in agony as the darkness invaded, tearing through my body and spirit.

"No," I heard Deborah whisper. Her anguish was worse than any pain I felt. "No, no, no..."

Malachai withdrew his hand, and I collapsed.

Deborah’s POV

Time stopped.

My world narrowed to Erick, falling, blood spreading across his chest. It looked black in the dim light. I felt his pain as if it were my own, felt his life draining away.

"ERICK!"

I moved without thinking, catching him before he hit the ground. His body was heavy in my arms, but his skin was already cold, his breathing shallow and difficult.

"No," I whispered, pressing my hands to the wound. Light flowed from my palms, but the Void magic was already spreading, ruining everything it touched.

"No, you don't get to do this. You don't get to leave me. Not now. Not after everything."

He looked at me, and even through the pain and the darkness spreading inside him, he smiled.

"Deborah," he breathed. My name on his lips sounded desperate. "I'm sorry. I'm so."

"Don't." My voice broke. "Don't apologize. Don't say goodbye."

But I could feel it through the bond, his life slipping away, the Void magic taking over. I felt his mind fading, his heart getting weaker with every second.

"I love you," he whispered, and his hand came up to touch my cheek. "I should have said it sooner. Should have said it every day. I love you,
Deborah. I..."

His hand fell.

His eyes closed.

And through the bond, I felt him die.
