Chapter 16 The Bitter Welcome
Chapter 16
Lyra's POV.
Is there anyone I can speak to about getting a job?” I asked calmly.
“Go through that hall, ask for Kubra, he would be the person to attend to you.” A guard replied.
I stepped into the hall. Everything was familiar but unusually empty unlike before where it would be filled up.
Before, this place was always lively. Always bright, joyful and full of life. But, it's only a shadow of its former glory.
Every air they breathe here. I know it. A reminder when me and Jax still have it going then. I used to bring gifts and other stuff to a lot of them and also free medical consultation.
I stepped into the hall with a small table and chair in that corner. No one was seated.
“ What do you want? Are you deaf? Didn't you hear that I have been talking to you from afar?”
The word suddenly echoed behind me, and I turned back to see a middle aged wolf rushing towards me.
“Don't you know this is a palace.” The middle aged wolf fumed, "Not a damn rat hole, you riffraffs can just walk in however you like.”
I was shocked.
I know him very well. He used to come to the clinic as a pack worker for free medical services whenever he was not on duty. Always smiling at me and respectful then. So how did he turn to this? Cruel. Unfriendly. Harsh.
Are you referring to me?” I squeezed my brow, shocked to the marrow, the way he had replied to me. I never knew his tongue was this sharp.
No!” The enraged man fired back, his words rattled me, “ I am talking to myself, fool.”
I pressed down my anger. Maybe I should give him a little slice of a new me.
I am asking again, who are you?”
He didn't let me respond before another question rolled out of his mouth.
“ …why are you here? To beg for money?”
I…I,” the word stuck to my throat. I didn't even know how to reply to him. The anger that had seated deep and calmly in my stomach had begun to crawl up my throat. But I had to just keep my cool.
He didn't let me land, before he quickly cut-in, "...Because I know people like you only come here to beg for money, nothing meaningful to add to this pack. Especially when the pack is burning.”
He fumed, looking at me from head to toe like a valueless wolf.
I am not here to beg for money? I am here to seek a job.”
He tossed his head back in frustration as he repeatedly matched the baton into his right hand like a weapon, ready to kill and to destroy.
“Seek for a job?”
I know,” he coughed out, rolling his eyes in frustration mixed with mockery, “my instincts never lie. They are not difficult to spot. By their look and dressing you shall know them.”
He waited a minute, “ there is no job here! Get the hell out of here!"
He roared at the top of his voice. Closing the distance between us. Baton jamming against his other hand.
“This place has turned into a marketplace for job seekers faces of people I have never seen come crawling in. Is there truly no other place to find jobs in this kingdom except here?”
His voice rattled me a bit. I watched him keenly as he spit those words out. If it is possible for me to change to old Mila. Maybe it would spurn something?
“No vacancy! Get out of here!” He bellowed, roaring at the top of his voice and pointing to the gate.
“I am sorry,” I replied sheepishly, turning and heading towards the gate. I turned and looked back into his reddish eyes reeked of alcohol. He also stared back at me in anger. Hissing.
I had moved a few steps away from him heading towards the door to hall we were, then I heard.
“What does
she want, Kubra?”
The voice sounds familiar.
I looked back, it was my sister. ROSA!
