Chapter 32 Invasive
Chapter 32 Invasive
My first sensation was the cold. It wasn't just the chill of a night breeze; it was a deep dampness that seemed to seep out of the very earth and settle in my marrow. My head throbbed with a rhythmic, sickening heat, each beat of my heart sending a spike of white-hot needles behind my eyelids.
I groaned, a low, broken sound that echoed hollowly. I tried to lift my hand to my face, to wipe away the sticky warmth I felt trickling down my temple, but my arm wouldn't move.
I jerked. A sharp, metallic clink rang out, vibrating through my bones.
My eyes snapped open.
At first, I saw nothing but shadows. Then, as the blurred shapes sharpened, I realized I wasn't in the estate. I wasn't in Azran’s bed. I was in a cave. The walls were jagged, glistening with moisture, and the only light came from a single, sputtering torch wedged into a crevice high above.
Panic, cold and oily, flooded my chest. I tried to sit up, but a heavy weight across my waist and wrists dragged me back down against the flat, freezing surface of a stone slab.
Clink. Clink.
I looked down and my breath hitched in a jagged sob. My wrists were encased in thick iron manacles, connected by short, heavy chains to bolts driven directly into the rock. My ankles were the same. The green silk dress, the one Azran had looked at with such hunger, was a ruin. It was torn open at the shoulder, the skirt shredded to my thighs, stained with dirt and my own dark blood.
"No," I whispered. "No, no, please..."
The memories came rushing back like a tidal wave, Vane’s betrayal, Azran’s scream as I was torn away. I began to thrash, my skin raw and burning against the unforgiving metal. I pulled until the iron bit into my flesh, until the scent of fresh blood filled the cramped space.
"Please!" I wailed, my voice bouncing off the damp stone. "Is anyone there? Please let me go! I’m just a human... I don't belong here! Please!"
I fought until my muscles turned to water. I screamed until my throat felt like I’d swallowed broken glass. Finally, the adrenaline drained away, leaving me hollow and trembling. I slumped back against the stone, my chest heaving, hot tears carving tracks through the grime on my face. I felt defeated. I felt like the girl at the auction again, waiting for the gavel to fall, waiting for the highest bidder to claim the pieces of me that were left.
Then, I heard it.
It wasn't a growl. It was a soft, rhythmic thud. Step. Step. Step.
I froze, my heart hammering so hard I thought it would burst through my ribs. I stared into the darkness at the far end of the cave, where the torchlight didn't reach. I expected a wolf. I expected a monster with dripping jaws and matted fur.
Instead, a man emerged from the dark.
As he stepped into the flickering amber light, my breath died in my throat. He was... beautiful. But it was a beauty that felt wrong, like a poisonous flower that looked too bright to be real.
His hair was the color of a starless midnight, falling in messy, elegant waves over a forehead that looked like carved marble. His features were sharper than Azran’s, more aristocratic, and his skin was so pale it almost seemed to glow in the dark. But it was his eyes that trapped me. They were the palest blue I had ever seen, the color of glacial ice or a blind man’s stare, and they were fixed on me with a hunger so intense it felt like a physical touch.
He didn't say a word. He approached the stone slab, his long black coat billowing slightly behind him. He looked like a king who had walked out of a nightmare.
He reached the edge of my stone bed and slowly, deliberately, crouched down. He was so close I could see the faint silver ring around his pupils. He smelled of rain, turpentine, and something sweet… like lilies left to rot in a vase.
He reached out. I flinched, pulling my head back as far as the chains would allow, but he was faster. His long, slender fingers gripped my chin, his touch like ice against my feverish skin. He tilted my head to the side, exposing the curve of my neck, where the "mark" from the woods lived.
"Finally," he whispered. His voice was a silken caress, deep and melodic, yet it carried a predatory edge that made the hair on my arms stand up. "My little bird is back in her cage."
"Please," I sobbed, my eyes searching his frozen blue ones for a shred of mercy. "Let me go. Azran said... he said you were his brother. Why are you doing this?"
A dark, twisted smile played on his lips. It wasn't a kind smile. It was the smile of a man who enjoyed pulling the wings off butterflies.
"Azran always was a thief," Callum murmured. He leaned in closer, his breath cool against my skin. "He saw something beautiful and thought he could put a fence around it. He thought he could 'save' you with a bond he didn't even understand."
His thumb traced the line of my jaw, his touch light, almost reverent, yet I felt the underlying threat in every nerve ending. He moved his hand down, his fingers brushing against the torn fabric of my dress, lingering over the swell of my breast. My skin crawled, a terrifying mix of revulsion and a strange, drugged-like heat that I couldn't control.
"You're shaking, Elara," he noted, his voice dropping to a perverted, husky lilt. "Is it the cold? Or is it because your body knows its true master?"
"You're not my master," I spat, though the words lacked conviction. "I don't belong to any of you."
Callum laughed. He leaned down, his face inches from mine. I could see the faint stubble on his jaw, the dark lashes that framed those haunting eyes.
"The mark I gave you in the woods... it wasn't just a scratch, little bird. It was a seed. Every time Azran touched you, every time he tried to 'claim' you, he was just watering it. He was making you ready for me."
He lowered his head. I squeezed my eyes shut, expecting pain, but instead, I felt his lips. They were soft, freezing cold, and terrifyingly gentle as they pressed against the mark on my neck. He didn't bite. He licked the skin, his tongue tracing the jagged lines of the scar with a slow, deliberate intimacy that made my toes curl into the stone.
"Mm," he hummed against my throat, his hand sliding down to cup my waist, pulling me as close to him as the chains permitted. "You taste of fear. And you taste of him. I’m going to enjoy washing his scent off you."
He pulled back just an inch, his eyes dark with a hunger that made me feel like I was melting. "Do you know what he did to me, Elara? Why I leave those headless wolves in that house? It’s because that’s what he did to our family. He cut the head off our legacy to play the hero."
"I don't care about your war!" I cried out, struggling again, the chains clanging loudly.
"But you are the war," he whispered, his hand moving up to grip my hair, tugging my head back so I had to look at him. "You are the ground we’re fighting on. And I think... I think I’m going to occupy every inch of you until there’s nothing left for him to even remember."
He leaned in again, his lips brushing against my ear. "Are you thirsty, little bird? You've been screaming for so long."
Before I could answer, he reached into his coat and pulled out a small silver flask. He unscrewed the cap and held it to my lips. "Drink."
"No," I turned my head away.
His grip on my hair tightened, not enough to scream, but enough to remind me I was helpless. "I didn't ask. Drink, or I'll find a much more... invasive way to keep you hydrated."
I looked at him, seeing the absolute darkness behind those pale eyes. I realized then that while Azran was a storm that wanted to own me, Callum was a void that wanted to consume me.
I opened my mouth, and the liquid hit my tongue. It wasn't water. It was thick, sweet, and metallic. Blood.
I tried to gag, to spit it out, but he clamped his hand over my mouth, forcing me to swallow. The heat of it hit my stomach like a lightning strike. My vision flared, the "mark" on my neck beginning to throb in time with the pounding in my head.
"Good girl," Callum purred, his eyes watching me with a sickeningly proud look. He tucked the flask away and leaned over me, his body a heavy, cold weight that pressed me into the stone.
"Now," he whispered, his hand sliding under the shredded silk of my skirt, his fingers grazing my thigh. "Let’s see just how much of my brother is left inside you so I can tear it out."
I wanted to scream, to fight, but the blood he had forced down my throat was making my limbs feel heavy, my mind floating in a dark, hazy fog. As he leaned down to claim my mouth, the last thing I felt was the freezing iron of the chains and the terrifyingly hot promise of the monster who had finally caught his prey.
