Chapter 59
Chapter 59
‘Where were the patrols?!’ was the first thought that went through Cassidy’s head as the pack house itself came under attack from the back yard. The second thought she had was just getting the kids out of there. The females went running to the house while some of the older boys stayed back to try to protect them or fight. The insane wolves converged in on the two unlucky souls that were caught far back by the woods and it at least gave them a few extra precious minutes. “Go! Now!” she yelled at the children as she passed them, glancing to the young men who chose to stay. “Shift if you can. Go for soft spots and go for the kill. Use everything you have been taught so far.. They wont hesitate to kill you.”
With her words, the boys all began to shift into their own wolves and Cassidy followed suit, finishing her change and stepping out of the now ruined dressed she had been given. The seconds it took for her to get shifted, she seen the boys flinch as a pack wide alert went out from their alpha through their minds. Warriors from across the pack grounds began to howl in an eerie, threatening way. The sound alone brought the creatures that had been full fledged werewolves once to a halt on the mauling of the bodies, to look up and then retreat back into the dark shadows and trees.
James and all the men from the pack house came pouring from every entrance like a nest of fire ants, James making a straight and direct line to Cassidy while keeping his eyes on the woods. “Get inside.” He said in an almost cold, business like tone that had the white she-wolf growling. There was no way she was going inside. Cassidy had been just about to tell James off when there was a collective cry of wolves in the woods, answering back to the BlackStone warriors.
“We have come for the white female. It is all we want. No further bloodshed has to happen tonight if you hand her over.” A booming voice could be heard from the cover of the pines and was followed by eager growls of men ready to fight on both sides. “Dont be stupid pup, we out number you five to one. Hand her over and we leave, or BlackStone falls tonight and we get her either way. The Choice is yours.”
Cassidy went very still when the offer was made. Deep down she knew James would never give her over, but the worry was there fleetingly. At what length would someone go to save their entire pack? The worry was interrupted by James’ sudden and loud growl. He didn't give an answer outright, but the aggression rolled off of him like a wave and he started marching towards the trees. ► “No!” ◄ Cassidy snapped into her mates mind, lunging forward and grabbing him by his pants with her teeth to keep him from advancing further. ► “we can find another way. Its a death sentence if you go in alone.” ◄ she said and held onto his clothing until she felt him relax.
James took a deep breath when Cassidy used the link between the two of them to stop him from going after whoever was making the offer. He had seen nothing but red when the man made it clear who they were there for and he began heading into the fight without thinking what he was doing. It wasn't until she had grabbed ahold of his slacks and spoke to him that his head cleared and he stock there, breathing heavy and glaring towards the trees. ► “I need you somewhere safe Cassidy. I cant have you out here with me. You are too big of a distraction. Please. Go help my mother with the people coming to the house.” ◄ he told her as he lowered a hand to gently brush over her head when she let go of his pants. “Please” he whispered urgently.
Cassidy looked up at James with a steady stare and let out a breath. She could see where his worry was from and why he wanted her inside. She was about to agree to go in when Jett came running across the yard to James and Cassidy, Alaric not far behind. “Cass…” he said, glancing warily to the trees. “I need to get you out of here now. These are the same rogues who attacked Wildwoods.” He said and James growled.
“How do you know? That was so long ago… and clear across the country.” James demanded and looked from Cassidy to Jett, stepping between the man and his mate protectively. “No one is taking her anywhere!”
Jett’s face set into a scowl when James got defensive. “They have a fucking witch!” he snapped at James and Alaric gripped his shoulder and gave it a firm warning squeeze for Jett to keep his temper under control. “They have a witch. I am sure of it. Its the only way they can mask their scents like this and get past patrols. It has this.. Slight pine sol scent that you can hardly detect. Its the same smell of the wolves when they came for our old pack. Let me get her out of-” he was saying, but stopped when he seen wolves pouring out of the woods, led by their captain.
The shock of what they seen coming wasn't the amount of rogues coming from the trees, it was their leader. Jett stood still, watching as his past alpha came charging in front of the rogue unit, shifting into the same colored wolf as Alpha Roan had been. Cassidy had been glaring at Jett for even suggesting she be taken away when the sound of hundreds of feet pulled her attention to the advancing rogues who had enough of waiting on the BlackStone pack to make a decision. When she seen who was leading it, she let out a low whine. It was the same male she had seen in her dream.. Her father.
Confusion filled Cassidy and she went to run to the man that was leading the rogues, but chaos completely erupted around them. Jett shoved past Cassidy with a violent roar of her fathers name, James and Alaric both ripping out of their clothes, running and shifting at the same time. Every fighting wolf met the attack head on and she just stood there in complete shock while Jett attacked her father first.
Cassidy couldn't let them hurt her father… she couldn't. Even if he was with the rogues, she couldn't lose him again. She took off seconds after all the warriors and the men that had been close to her took off to meet the wolves. She didn't know how she could stop James or even Jett at this point, but she had to try. As soon as she got a few steps in, a dark, inky black wolf jumped into her path, snarling in aggression and easily recognized as Jennifer, whatever the woman had used to hide her scent now wearing off.
Both women bared their teeth at each other. Cassidy’s wolf took full on control when her rival came to challenge her and she didn't waste a single second before she leapt forward in attack. Jennifer had thought she was going to be the next Luna. She had assumed just because she lay in James’ bed and spread her legs that she was going to be the chosen one to stand by his side for the rest of their days and Cassidy was going to put her into her place once and for all.
Jennifer and Cassidy came together in a vicious clash of teeth and claws, ripping at each other with violent shakes of their heads once they had their teeth sank into each other. Cassidy could have easily over powered the other she-wolf, but she wanted to cause Jennifer pain and make her suffer for what she had done to James. They broke apart from each other, both of them bloody but Jennifer a lot worse off as they circled, sizing each other up before Cassidy growled loudly. The tone of the growl her wolf used brought Jennifer to a stop and the she-wolf lowered her head, fighting the sudden need to lower herself and submit.
Cassidy watched as Jennifer felt the command in her tone and started fighting the natural instinct to submit. Triumph lighting up her eyes. She could not communicate directly with Jennifer, but it was clear already who was going to win this fight between them. Cassidy was gearing up to attack Jennifer again when she heard James’ pain filled shout from deep within the battle at the edge of the woods. Her attention snapped to the trees with worry, focusing on James.
Jennifer seen her chance with Cassidy distracted and she took it. She was there for one reason and one reason only… To watch the life and breath fade from the Luna’s body. The rogues wanted Cassidy when they learned she was a white wolf, and she had worked her ass off to get where she was with the rogues. She was so close to catching the Kings favor. She wasn't about to let the white bitch get it too.
With Cassidy looking towards the battle, Jennifer took her chance and went directly for the kill.
