Chapter 6 The Mirror Image

Chapter 6 The Mirror Image
Chapter 6:

Sera's POV

The Continental Alpha Council convened at dawn in the grand ceremonial hall. The same hall where I'd been rejected five years ago. Irony tasted like ash on my tongue.

I'd dressed for war disguised as diplomacy. Black leather fitted like armor, silver threading that caught light with every movement, the Lunar Lycan crest prominent on my chest. My crown sat heavy but right, a reminder of who I'd become.

Asher walked beside me, small hand gripping mine with surprising strength. I'd tried to leave him with guards, but after last night's escape, keeping him close felt safer. Plus, let them all see what Dante rejected.

"Mama, there are so many people." Asher's silver eyes swept the hall with unsettling awareness for a five year old.

"Remember what I taught you. Head high. Make them lower their eyes first."

"Like you do to Uncle Marcus when he's being annoying?"

I bit back a smile. "Exactly like that."

The hall fell silent as we entered. Every Alpha, Luna, and advisor tracked our movement. Whispers erupted in our wake.

"That's the Twilight Sovereign..."

"The child looks just like..."

"Is that really Sera? The Omega who..."

I let them stare. Let them whisper. Their opinions meant nothing.

Dante stood at the head table with the other senior Alphas, his face carefully neutral. Lydia clung to his arm like a barnacle, her dress obscenely expensive and her smile sharp as broken glass. She'd aged poorly. Stress lines around her mouth, eyes hard with constant calculation.

I took my assigned seat at the council table, positioning Asher beside me. Protocol dictated I should be farther from the head, but I'd sent word ahead. The Twilight Sovereign sits where she chooses, or she doesn't sit at all.

They'd given me the seat directly across from Dante.

Perfect.

"The Continental Alpha Council is now in session." Elder Moira, the council's moderator, struck her staff against the floor. "We gather to address territory disputes, trade agreements, and matters of pack security."

Standard opening. I let the familiar political drone wash over me, watching Dante from beneath lowered lashes. He couldn't stop looking at Asher. His face cycled through emotions too fast to track...wonder, regret, desperate longing, fear.

Good. Suffer.

"Before we proceed with the formal agenda," Moira continued, "we acknowledge new members to the Council. The Aurora Territory, under the leadership of the Twilight Sovereign, joins us for the first time."

Polite applause. Some genuine, most cautious. I stood, inclined my head with precise courtesy.

"The Aurora Territory is honored to participate." My voice carried without effort. "We look forward to productive collaboration."

I sat. Dante's jaw clenched so hard I heard his teeth grind from across the table.

"Additionally," Moira's voice took on an edge, "the High Council has submitted a motion regarding leadership succession and territorial stability."

Ice flooded my veins. Here it comes.

"They propose new oversight measures for Alphas whose territories have shown significant decline. Alphas who fail to maintain their lands may be subject to votes of no confidence."

Every eye in the room turned to Dante. His territory's failure was common knowledge, crops struggling, wolves leaving, the land itself seeming to sicken. The whispers said it happened when you rejected your true Luna, but most dismissed that as superstition.

I knew better.

"This is highly irregular," Alpha Chen protested. "The High Council has no authority over individual pack leadership."

"They do when territorial decline threatens regional stability," another Alpha countered. "Crimson Fang borders three major territories. If it collapses, we all suffer."

The debate erupted. Voices overlapped, arguments escalated. I remained silent, watching Dante's face drain of color as he realized what was happening.

They were coming for his position. And I was supposed to help them do it.

Asher tugged my sleeve. "Mama, why is everyone yelling?"

"Politics, sweetheart. Adults being dramatic."

"Like when Uncle Rhett and Commander Lyssa argue about training schedules?"

"Exactly like that, but with higher stakes."

"ORDER!" Moira's staff cracked like thunder. "The motion will be formally presented tomorrow, allowing council members tonight to review evidence and form positions."

Translation: Tonight, people would attempt to bribe, threaten, or persuade me to vote their way.

"This council is adjourned until-"

The door burst open with enough force to crack the frame.

Marcus stumbled in, blood streaming from a gash on his temple, his clothes torn. Behind him, three of my Aurora guards supported a fourth who looked half-dead.

I was on my feet instantly, Asher behind me. "What happened?"

"Attack." Marcus's voice came in gasps. "On our delegation quarters. They're after+"

He didn't finish. Couldn't. He collapsed, and I caught him before he hit the ground.

"Get the healers!" I barked at the nearest servant. "Now!"

Chaos erupted. Alphas shouting orders, guards mobilizing, Moira trying to restore control.

"Mama?" Asher's voice was small, frightened.

I handed Marcus to my guards, then turned to pull Asher close...

He wasn't there. He was gone

My heart stopped. "Asher?"

I spun, searching the suddenly crowded hall. Where?

There. Near the windows. Asher stood frozen, staring at something outside. His eyes glowed pure silver, power radiating from his small frame in visible waves.

"Asher!" I pushed through the crowd, every maternal instinct screaming danger.

He didn't respond. Couldn't hear me over whatever held his attention.

I reached him, grabbed his shoulders, turned him to face me...

His eyes weren't focused on me. They looked through me, at something I couldn't see. When he spoke, his voice carried a strange echo, like multiple people speaking at once.

"They're coming. The shadow men with red eyes. They want to take me to the dark place where Mama can't find me."

Ice crawled down my spine. "Who's coming, baby? Who are the shadow men?"

Before he could answer, the windows exploded inward.

Glass shattered in a deadly rain. I threw myself over Asher, feeling shards slice my back. Screams erupted as wolves scattered.

Through the broken windows came rogues but these weren't normal rogues. Their eyes glowed red with corrupted magic, foam dripping from their jaws, moving with inhuman speed and coordination.

"PROTECT THE COUNCIL!" Dante's command cut through the chaos.

Guards formed defensive lines. Alphas shifted, some into wolf form, others fighting human-style with enhanced strength. The hall became a battlefield in seconds.

I pulled Asher upright, checking him for injuries. Not a scratch, thank the moon.

"Stay behind me," I ordered. "Don't move, don't shift, don't-"

A rogue broke through the defensive line, heading straight for us. Red eyes locked on Asher with singular focus.

I moved between them, letting silver light flood my system. My hand shot out, caught the rogue mid-leap, and threw him across the hall hard enough to crack the stone wall.

"Anyone else?" I let my voice carry, let them all see what happened to threats. "Anyone else want to try?"

Three more rogues peeled off from attacking guards and charged at Asher.

Fine. They wanted to see a Lunar Lycan's full power?

I shifted, not fully into wolf form, but into the hybrid state only royal bloodlines could achieve. Silver light exploded from my skin. My bones cracked and reformed, strength multiplying tenfold. Claws extended, fangs lengthened, but I remained mostly humanoid.

And I moved.

The first rogue died before it could scream, my claws through its throat. The second tried to dodge. I was faster. Caught it mid-leap, slammed it into the floor with enough force to crater the stone. The third turned to flee.

I didn't let it.

When the silver light faded and I stood human again, three dead rogues lay at my feet and the entire hall had gone deathly silent.

Every wolf present stared at me. Not with admiration. With fear.

"Holy moon goddess," someone whispered. "She's really-"

"Lunar Lycan," another finished. "The rumors were true."
