"What? How is that possible?"

Xavier shot me a look.

"You already suspected this"

"Yeah. But....I don't think Val is the same person"

"Why?"

"What makes you say that?" The brothers asked at the same time.

"I spoke to Salem"

"And she knows something?"

"She remembers bits from her childhood. She remembers her mother too and Val isn't her mother"

"But you said..."

"I know what I said. And I was sure until I spoke to Salem. Her mother's face was burned on one side. Val is different"

"And what did your mother say?"

"That she died. I think it may be a big understanding"

"That doesn't make any sense. I think there must be something off about her” Xavier countered.

I looked at Xander

“I’ll handle it. In the meantime, she’ll remain confined in the healer's quarters” I nodded in understanding.

Even if it was all a misunderstanding, there was no harm in conducting investigations to ensure she wasn’t dangerous to the children.

Xavier stayed a while as he discussed with Xander while I nestled into his side. 

A knock came on the door and Gabriel strolled in. 

“You have a…” he was nudged out of the hallway as Farron stepped in, a gentle look on his face.

“Farron?”

“Why the fuck is he here?” Xavier snarled and I shot him a look.

“I was in the area and I wanted to drop by and see you” Xander scoffed.

“You don’t have the right to barge into my territory whenever you feel like”

“Xander” I slapped his hands as I stood up.

“That was very thoughtful of you Farron. How are my parents?”

“Doing very well. They sent their regards” I smiled warmly at him.

“If you don’t mind, I’d like to discuss something with you….in private”

“You will not…”

“Of course” I cut Xander off.

“I’ll wait outside” Farron said and turned away while I looked back to my mate.

“I don’t want you talking to him about anything in private” he huffed.

“Your jealousy is cute but very unnecessary darling. I’m not going to run off with Farron. I gave birth to your kids”

“He acts like you’re still single and engaged to him”

“Farron is sweet and polite” Xander snorted but had no objection as I walked outside the office.

Farron was waiting in the hallway, a smile on his face.

“I hope it’s not an issue that I showed up unannounced”

“Of course not. You’re welcome here. You’re like family”

His smile widened. “That’s why I’m always concerned about you. I was speaking with your mother some days ago and she was very worried about you”

“What about?”

“The child who looked so much like a girl from our past. And the servant with the burns”

“She mentioned that?”

“Of course. She wanted me to speak to you about it but I told her you could handle yourself”

“My mama worries a lot. She was mistaken. I looked into it and it was a misunderstanding”

“Oh. That’s good then. I wanted to conduct one for you and I needed your permission”

“There’s no need Farron. Thank you so much”

“Okay then. I’ll be going. See you?” I nodded and watched him leave.

I returned to the office and watched the three men pretending to be engaged in something. I rolled my eyes as I went to my mate's side.

“Were you eavesdropping?”

They denied at the same time.

“Ridiculous” Xavier mumbled. 

“Need your permission” Xander muttered behind me mockingly and I knew they were definitely listening in. 

“I hate that bastard” Xavier said out loud, and Xander agreed. I rolled my eyes and leaned into him.

Their conversation drifted from one thing to another and I fell asleep halfway into the discussion and when I woke up, Xander was kissing my forehead as he lay me onto our bed. 

“Stay” I whined.

“I wish I could. I have to deal with something real quick”

“Are you going to leave the pack?”

“Possibly”

“Go with Xavier” I said lightly and he nodded, kissing me on the forehead as he disappeared again. 

I fell back into a deep sleep until the children woke me up again. 

I spent time with them as they went in about their day. Xander was absent at dinner so I dealt with them alone and put them to sleep.

Once I made sure everyone was tucked into their bed, I took a shower and climbed back into bed to sleep.

Something startled me awake in the middle of the night. It wasn’t a sound, just an eerie feeling that I couldn’t shake off. 

Xander was still asleep beside me. I didn’t want to bother him. My bare feet touched the cold floor and the sheets behind me ruffled.

“Baby?” His deep voice rumbled as he sat up.

“What’s wrong? Where are you going?”

“I…just go check the children. I’ll be back”

“Let me come with you” he offered but I shook my head.

“It’s okay. I’ll just check on them and be right back”

“I’ll come with you” Xander insisted firmly as he climbed out, taking his pants at the door of the bed.

We walked down the quiet hallway. Zain’s room was the first stop. He lay peacefully in his bed, breathing heavily. I rearranged the covers around him. 

The twins' room was next. I turned on the light by the doorway and soft light flooded the room. Sage was nestled under her covers but when I turned to Freya's side of the bed, it was empty. 

I frowned as I marched over, tearing the sheet off the bed. 

“She’s not here” I whispered, my heart thumping in fear. 

“I’ll check the bathroom” he mumbled as he disappeared to check for her. I didn’t wait. I marched down the hallway to Leo’s bedroom.

Leo sat upright as soon as I opened it.

“Mama?”

“Where is Freya?” I asked impatiently.

“In bed? You tucked her in”

“I did. I went to check on the girls but she wasn’t there” his brows furrowed.

“Where could she have gone. It’s late in the night”

“I have no fucking idea” I cursed, backing out of the room as I went in search of Salem.

Her door was unlocked and hope built. But it was shattered in the next moment when I saw the empty bed.

“Salem” I called softly as I opened the bathroom door. It was empty too.

“She’s not here” Xander said from behind me.

“Did something happen? Where could they have gone to?”

“They probably thought it was a good idea to wander in the night. I’ll go out and check”

“Take a guard with you” Xander ordered before I could stop him from going.

“We have to find them?”

“I’ve mindlinked Gabriel and Xavier. They’re out looking for them”

“We should go out too” I said with urgency.

“I know a few places where they could have gone”

Xander didn’t try to dissuade me. He nodded.

“I’ll go with you” I tried to smile in thanks but it was impossible. We walked out of the pack house and into the night.

We checked their favorite spots while the others searched the surrounding areas.

‘Mama’ I felt Leo through the mind link.

‘Did you find them?’ I asked.

‘I found something’
