Chapter 296 Mordaunt's Fury
POV: Mordaunt | London, private location
I have been in London for eleven days, which is the number of days since I left Surrey with the specific quality of someone ending a waiting period rather than extending it, the five years of preparation producing in me on the morning of the departure a quality that was not urgency but readiness, the specific quality of something that has been accumulating and which has reached the point where accumulation requires action rather than continued accumulation.
The debt plan was elegant. This is not self-flattery, it is assessment, the specific quality of someone evaluating their own work with the same analytical distance they would apply to anyone else's, and the assessment is that the plan was elegant because it used the dragon's mechanism rather than requiring me to create a new one, the existing debt structure producing the existing pressure at the existing deadline, and my position as the only party with both the resources and the motivation to resolve the pressure before the deadline doing the remainder.
The Callum problem has never been his abilities or his leadership or his community's loyalty to him, which are all real and which I have always assessed accurately. The Callum problem has been the absence of a lever, the specific quality of someone who is not corrupt and who is not personally ambitious and who does not have a hidden thing that can be used against him, which is the specific quality that makes most people in positions of influence manageable and which Callum Brennan does not have.
The debt was the lever.
I receive the notification of the full payment through Vermithrax Consolidated's financial network at ten seventeen in the morning, which is the specific time that tells me the payment was assembled and submitted in the hours between my midnight meeting with Callum and this morning, which means the forty-eight hours I granted produced what I assessed the forty-eight hours would not produce, and the assessment was wrong.
The wrongness of the assessment is the thing I am sitting with.
I call Vermithrax, which produces the quality that calling Vermithrax always produces, which is the specific quality of a call that is received by someone who was expecting it and who has prepared the response.
"You let him pay," I say.
"He tendered the full balance before the deadline," Vermithrax says. "The contract terms do not include a provision allowing the creditor to refuse valid payment."
"You wanted him to default," I say. "That was the arrangement. I provide him with the mechanism to default by withholding an alternative, you receive the foreclosure, I receive the leverage."
"That was an informal understanding," Vermithrax says, with the specific quality of a dragon describing an informal understanding that they have decided is no longer relevant. "The payment was valid. The contract is fulfilled. The Rookeries designation is permanent." A pause that has the quality of someone who wants the next thing to land correctly. "I got my money, Mordaunt. I do not care about your schemes."
The call ends.
I sit in the private location that I have been using since returning to London, which is not the Kensington estate, which remains seized, and which is a specific address that none of my networks have connected to me because I established it through layers that do not trace back, and I think about the debt plan and the forty-eight hours and the Alteroni contribution and the Cormac contribution and the network of community members who apparently produced fifty thousand pounds in two hours when called.
The community produced the solution. This is the specific failure of the plan that I did not fully account for, which is that I assessed Callum as the unit against which the pressure was being applied and which did not account correctly for the community around him, the specific network that eight years of building something worth building has produced and which can be called upon in the way that it was called upon this morning.
Callum does not have a hidden thing. His community is the visible thing. And the visible thing is harder to apply leverage against than a hidden thing because it is everywhere and it responds to threat by organizing rather than by submitting.
I am alone in the private location without dragon backing, because Vermithrax's position on my schemes has just been clearly stated, and without leverage, because the debt has been paid, and without the Parliamentary support that my network was building toward through Renwick's campaign, because Elena's election closed that mechanism.
Still in London. Still with six hundred and seventeen years. Still with the specific network that I rebuilt over five years of patient work, which is smaller than the previous version and more targeted and which has not been touched by the payment because the payment is a financial event and the network is an informational one.
The plan changes. This is not defeat and I do not experience it as defeat, which is the specific quality of someone who has enough time horizon to understand that the failure of a specific plan is not the failure of the objective.
"Fine," I say, to the private location, to the eleven days in London and the five years in Surrey and the six hundred and seventeen years before both of them. "If he won't accept help, I'll destroy him another way."
The other way is not yet formed. It will form. I have time and I have patience and I have a community that builds things worth building that I can watch and wait for the crack in.
