Chapter 127 The Rector
PROFESSOR CORNELIUS FELL
The Hermetic Order emergency council convenes in secret. Beneath the British Museum. Warded chambers. Magically secured.
All thirteen council members present. All furious.
"You exposed us!" Grandmaster Thorne's voice echoes. "Your capture operation was documented. Our contracts leaked. Our crimes revealed. Parliament censured us!"
"We gained valuable data," I defend calmly. "Twenty-three bodies collected during chaos. Hybrid embryos developed. Scientific advancement achieved. The war isn't over."
"The war is suspended! We're under investigation! Parliamentary oversight! Public scrutiny!" Master Corvinus slams the table. "Your ambition destroyed our discretion!"
"Discretion is overrated. Progress requires risk. We took risks. We advanced decades in weeks." I pull out research files. "Look at results. Twenty-three specimens. Fifteen successful tissue harvests. Eight viable genetic sequences. Three hybrid embryos developed. Including one dhampir-werewolf cross that's stable."
The council examines the files. Anger mixing with interest. Science overriding fury.
"Specimen L-001," Grandmaster Thorne reads. "Dhampir-werewolf hybrid. Female. Developing properly. Estimated viability: eighty-seven percent. Genetic parents: Valentina Corvino's cousin and Callum Brennan."
"Yes. Created from blood samples collected during various operations. Lucia is proof hybrid program works. Proof our theories are correct. Proof we can create controllable supernatural soldiers."
"At what cost? We're exposed. Under scrutiny. Can't continue operations publicly."
"Then we continue secretly. Underground. Carefully." I close the files. "Parliament suspended extermination order. They're watching packless wolves. But they're not watching us. We rebuild quietly. Continue experiments discreetly. Advance the program without public exposure."
"How? Parliamentary oversight tracks our facilities. Our funding. Our operations."
"Public facilities. Public funding. Public operations." I smile. "We also have private facilities. Dark funding. Secret operations. Parliament doesn't know about those. Doesn't track them. Can't regulate them."
"You're proposing continuing hybrid program illegally? Without oversight? Completely underground?"
"I'm proposing we recognize reality. Public operations are suspended. Private operations continue. Parliament's censure only applies to visible work. Invisible work proceeds uninterrupted."
The council debates. Arguing. Some want to suspend entirely. Some want to continue carefully. Some want revenge on those who exposed us.
"Vote," Grandmaster Thorne calls. "Option one: suspend all operations. Option two: continue operations secretly. Option three: retaliate against those who exposed us."
Hands raise. Counted. Eight votes for option two. Three for option three. Two for option one.
Option two wins. Continue operations secretly.
"Parameters," Thorne announces. "No public operations. No Parliamentary contact. No traceable funding. Everything underground. Everything secret. Everything deniable."
"And the hybrid program?"
"Continues. But carefully. No mass captures. No obvious specimens. Select acquisition only." Thorne looks at me. "You're primary researcher. You continue L-001 development. You maintain secret facilities. You ensure absolute discretion."
"And if I'm discovered?"
"Then you acted independently. Hermetic Order disavows. You face consequences alone. That's price of continuing."
"Acceptable." I stand. "What about witnesses? Those who know too much about our operations?"
"Eliminate anyone who knows too much." Thorne's voice is cold. "Parliament members who exposed us. Wolves who documented us. Humans who testified. Anyone who can connect Hermetic Order to illegal operations."
"That's dozens of people."
"Then dozens die. Quietly. Carefully. Untraceable." He distributes target lists. "Begin with highest-risk witnesses. Work down systematically. No patterns. No connections. Just... accidents. Coincidences. Natural causes."
I study the list. Silas Rayne. Count Alteroni. Countess Isolde. Isla Reid. Tom Cracksman. Others who documented our crimes.
All marked for elimination. All targets. All dead within months if we succeed.
"What about Callum Brennan?" I ask. "He's primary resistance leader. Primary threat."
"Not yet. He's too visible. Killing him now triggers investigation. Wait until later. Until opportunity is perfect. Until his death can be staged as internal conflict or accident."
"And his hybrid daughter? L-001? If he discovers her existence?"
"He won't. She's in secure facility. Guarded. Protected. Unknown." Thorne closes the meeting. "Continue your work, Professor. Advance the hybrid program. Eliminate witnesses. Prepare for long game. Parliamentary censure is temporary. Our research is eternal."
The council disperses. Assignment clear. Mission unchanged. Just methods modified.
I return to my laboratory. Secret facility. Three levels underground. Magically warded. Completely untraceable.
L-001 is developing properly. Three months growth. Halfway to viable birth. Female. Dhampir-werewolf cross. Callum's genetic daughter. Valentina's cousin's genetic daughter. Hybrid nobody knows exists.
"You're perfect," I tell the embryo. Preserved in magical incubation. "You're proof humans can control supernatural reproduction. Can breed loyal soldiers. Can create armies."
The embryo doesn't respond. Developing. Growing. Unaware.
I check other specimens. Failed hybrids. Genetic experiments. Tissue cultures. Twenty-three bodies created vast research opportunities.
The battle failed as capture operation. Succeeded as harvesting operation. We lost publicly. Won scientifically.
That's acceptable. Science is long game. Public opinion is temporary. Research is forever.
"Begin witness elimination," I tell my assistant. "Start with Silas Rayne. Make it look like accident. Tragic. Unfortunate. Natural."
"When?"
"Soon. Within weeks. But carefully. No patterns. No connections. Just... unfortunate coincidences."
My assistant nods. Leaves to coordinate.
I return to L-001. To Lucia. To the hybrid daughter Callum doesn't know he has.
"Your father fights for freedom. For community. For resistance. He'll never know you exist. Never know you're being raised as weapon. Never know his blood created exactly what he opposes."
The embryo continues developing. Unaware. Innocent. Tool.
Perfect.
