Chapter 42
Chapter 42
HARLEY
As Shane and I stepped back into the house, my father turned to Susan, a hint of pride in his voice. “Susan,” he said, “we’ll need to clear the guest room for Shane. He’ll be staying the night.”
Susan’s eyebrows shot up in surprise, clearly taken aback by the sudden arrangement. She glanced at me with a suspicious glint, her lips pressing into a tight line before she nodded. “Of course,” she replied coolly, hiding her irritation beneath a veneer of politeness. “I’ll make sure it’s ready.”
Without another word, she turned and headed down the hallway, gesturing for me to follow her. I shot Shane a small, reassuring smile before hurrying after her. Once we reached the guest room, Susan turned to me, her expression sharp and cold.
“Well, I hope you know what you’re doing, Harley,” she hissed under her breath. “Bringing strangers into this house—honestly, the last thing we need is another mouth to feed.”
I bit back a sigh, nodding as I started tidying up the guest room, fluffing the pillows and straightening the sheets. Susan hovered in the doorway, watching me with narrowed eyes as if waiting for me to slip up.
“Just make sure he doesn’t cause any trouble,” she said sharply. “The last thing this family needs is… complications.”
“Yes, Susan,” I replied quietly, keeping my tone even. I knew better than to argue with her.
Once I finished setting up the room, I left, closing the door behind me and making my way to my own room. The house was quiet now, and I felt a strange restlessness settle over me. I tried to sleep, but the events of the day kept playing over in my mind—Shane’s arrival, the tension at dinner, the conversation we’d had outside. And now, he was here, just down the hall, bringing his world closer to mine in a way I hadn’t expected.
After tossing and turning for what felt like an eternity, I finally gave up on sleep. Something inside me urged me to see him, to check on him. Maybe it was the bond, or maybe it was just the overwhelming curiosity and concern I felt. Whatever it was, I found myself slipping out of bed, padding down the hallway, and knocking softly on the door to the guest room.
“Come in,” Shane’s voice came through, calm but unmistakably his.
I opened the door and stepped inside, finding him sitting on the edge of the bed, his gaze warm and welcoming. He looked up, his eyes lighting up slightly when he saw me, as if he’d been expecting me.
“Couldn’t sleep?” he asked gently, a small smile playing on his lips.
I shook my head, closing the door behind me as I moved closer. “I thought maybe… maybe you couldn’t sleep either.”
He chuckled softly, nodding. “I guess neither of us are getting much rest tonight.”
There was a brief silence before he patted the space beside him on the bed. “Come sit with me?”
I hesitated, but then nodded, crossing the room to sit beside him, my heart pounding as I took in his presence, the closeness of him. “Shane,” I began softly, “will you… tell me about what happened? About your past?”
He looked down, his expression darkening slightly, as if the memories weighed heavily on him. For a moment, I thought he might brush it off, but then he took a deep breath, nodding.
“Alright,” he said, his voice low and steady. “I suppose you deserve to know.”
He shifted, staring at the wall as he began his story. “I used to have a sister. Her name was Lyra. She was… everything to me. We grew up together, faced the world together. She was my family, my pack.”
A shadow passed over his face, and I could see the pain etched in his features. “But there was someone else—a friend of ours, Roy. We thought he was one of us, someone we could trust. But he betrayed us. He betrayed me.”
“What did he do?” I whispered, my heart sinking as I saw the grief in Shane’s eyes.
Shane clenched his fists, his jaw tightening. “He turned on us, challenged my right as alpha, said that he was better suited to lead the pack. And when I refused… he attacked. He killed my sister right in front of me, made me watch as he took everything I cared about.”
A lump formed in my throat, tears stinging my eyes. I couldn’t imagine the horror of witnessing something so cruel, so devastating. “I’m… I’m so sorry, Shane,” I murmured, reaching out to place a hand on his arm.
He looked at me, a flicker of gratitude in his gaze before he continued. “After that, I was cast out, left with nothing. The elders… they said there was only one way for me to regain my strength. They told me that if I found my mate, my true bond, I would become strong again. Strong enough to take back what Roy stole from me.”
“And… did you believe them?” I asked softly, watching his face.
He nodded slowly. “I did. I held onto that hope, that one day I’d find someone who could help me become whole again. But now… even with you by my side, even with the bond between us… I still feel weak. It’s like something inside me is broken, and no matter what I do, I can’t fix it.”
I took his hand, squeezing it gently. “But you’re not alone, Shane. I’m here, and I’m not going anywhere. We’ll figure this out together.”
A hint of sadness flickered in his eyes, and he gave me a small, grateful smile. “Thank you, Harley. I don’t know what I’d do without you.”
We sat in silence for a moment, the weight of his story settling over us, heavy and raw. I could feel his exhaustion, the toll this battle had taken on him, and it made my heart ache. He was so much stronger than he realized, yet he carried so much pain.
“Well,” I said softly, giving his hand one last squeeze, “we can talk more about it tomorrow. You need to rest.”
I started to stand, but his hand tightened around mine, stopping me. “Harley… wait.”
I turned to him, surprised by the urgency in his gaze. “Yes?”
He looked down, his expression a mix of vulnerability and hesitation. “Would you… would you stay with me tonight? Just… beside me. Maybe… maybe it will help. Maybe the bond will be stronger.”
My heart skipped a beat, and I felt a warmth spread through me, a strange mix of surprise and something deeper, something that made me want to be close to him, to comfort him. I hesitated for a moment, then nodded, giving him a reassuring smile.
“Alright,” I whispered, sitting back down beside him.
Shane looked relieved, a small smile touching his lips as he pulled the blanket up, shifting slightly to make room for me. I lay down beside him, my heart racing as I settled into the unfamiliar comfort of his presence, the warmth of his body beside mine.
For a moment, we lay there in silence, the night quiet around us, only the sound of our breathing filling the room. I felt the tension in him slowly ease, his breathing evening out, and I wondered if maybe, just maybe, my presence was helping him find some peace.
“Thank you,” he murmured softly, his voice barely more than a whisper. “I… I don’t feel so alone with you here.”
I looked up at him, meeting his gaze in the dim light. “You’re not alone, Shane,” I said, my voice steady. “And you never will be, as long as I’m here.”
He closed his eyes, a hint of a smile on his lips, and I felt a warmth settle over us, something deeper than words or promises. In that quiet moment, lying there beside him, I knew that somehow, our bond was real, something neither of us fully understood but both felt deeply.
Eventually, his breathing slowed, the exhaustion of the day finally catching up with him. I lay there, listening to his breaths, feeling the weight of his story, the strength of his need. And as sleep began to pull me under, I realized that no matter what came next, I was ready to stand by his side.
Because somehow, against all odds, Shane had become my world, and I wasn’t about to let him face it alone.
