Chapter 192

Chapter 192
ISABELLA

Sitting across from my mother in a dim meeting hall, surrounded by both werewolves and hunters, I can feel every eye on me, assessing, doubting. My heart races as I start to speak, but I keep my voice steady. I know, with every part of me, that this is what I was meant to do—what the spirit of the pack urged me toward in my dreams. I swallow hard, watching Emilia’s cold expression, as though she’s staring through a stranger.

“There’s been enough bloodshed,” I begin, locking eyes with my mother. “Hunters and werewolves don’t have to be enemies.”

Emilia tilts her head, a hint of disapproval in her narrowed eyes. For a moment, I wonder if she even sees her daughter anymore, or just a wolf.

“Peace isn’t built on words,” she says icily, her gaze flitting to the hunters around her. “It’s built on power. And I don’t think you have enough of it.”

I breathe in deeply, steadying myself. “Then let’s create a council,” I say, words firm. “A council with hunters and werewolves. We could establish boundaries—mutual respect. And if either side violates the agreement, there’s a system for mediation.”

Emilia laughs, though there’s a flicker of surprise in her expression. It’s clear she didn’t expect me to be this composed, and maybe she didn’t expect this from any wolf. “Do you really believe you can enforce this?”

“If I didn’t believe it, I wouldn’t be here.”

Silence falls over the room, thick and tense. The hunters glance between Emilia and me, clearly waiting for her lead. After a beat, she slowly nods. “I’ll take this to my people. But if we accept, it’s only because we don’t want to waste resources on bloodshed. But you werewolves will have to stay away from humans.”

The words sting, but I feel a surge of relief. We’ve taken the first step toward peace, and I realize I’m holding my breath as I manage a small nod in return. This isn’t a full victory yet—but it’s the closest we’ve come in generations.

ASHER

Standing before the pack, I look into their faces—familiar, loyal, wary—and feel a new resolve settle over me. Isabella’s words from the negotiations echo in my mind, along with her courage. There’s no mistaking the uncertainty here; some are tense, others curious, but they all need answers. They need strength.

“We’ve come to an agreement with the hunters,” I announce, pausing as murmurs ripple through the crowd. “This truce has been reached for one reason: the safety of every wolf here.”

The room quiets as I continue. “No more running. I know what I'm about to say was never strictly a rule, but it's now forbidden to reveal our existence to anyone. If any of you should happen to have a human companion, then that person should report it to us so that we can look into the matter and make sure it's safe. But we’re also not pushing into their territory. This peace depends on trust and discipline from both sides.” I meet the eyes of the pack leaders, all of whom nod back, bolstering my own confidence.

I pause, scanning their faces. “We’re also going to make some changes in our security teams,” I add, my voice low and firm. “A new defense protocol that will focus on alerting us if anything shifts in the hunters’ movements. We’ll stay vigilant, and we won’t risk anyone’s safety.”

There’s a murmur of agreement, and I notice Isabella watching me from the back, her eyes filled with pride. For the first time, I feel a different kind of confidence—a sense that I’m not leading alone. The pack nods, and I can tell that they feel it, too.

KNOX

I lean back on the couch, watching the evening settle over us like a warm blanket. Isabella’s on the floor with Luca, her face glowing as she helps him with one of his puzzles. I watch him tug on her shirt, flashing his little grin as she fakes exasperation at the pieces he keeps tossing aside. Beside them, Jax is flipping through a picture book, ready for story time. There’s something grounding about this—seeing our family together like this, even if it’s only for a night.

I stretch my arm over the back of the couch, feeling content but slightly restless. Maybe I never expected my life would look like this, sharing a mate with my brothers, having a child, and the kind of peace I never thought possible. I catch Isabella’s eye, and she gives me that half-smile that’s hers alone. I walk over to her, pulling her close, and murmur, “We’re pretty lucky, you know that?”

She laughs softly, resting her head against my chest. “Yes, we are.”

I hold her a little tighter, wishing we could stay like this forever. Even in the midst of all our struggles, it feels good—complete. I close my eyes, breathing her in, knowing this is all I’ve ever wanted.

JAX

The night air is still as I stand on the porch, looking out over the forest that’s been my home as long as I can remember. We’ve been through hell, fought battles I never thought we’d win, but here we are. I feel a hand on my shoulder, and turn to see Asher standing beside me, his face lit with a rare smile.

“It’s over,” I murmur, more to myself than to him.

He nods, and there’s something almost peaceful in his gaze as he looks out over the trees. “We’ve got a family to protect. And we’re going to keep it safe, whatever it takes.”

A soft laugh escapes me. It wasn’t that long ago that I would’ve brushed off a line like that. But now… now it just feels right. I look back toward the house, where I can hear Isabella and Knox inside with Luca. It’s surreal, really—this quiet, this sense of having something to protect.

Asher and I share a glance, and we both know what we’re thinking. There’s a future here—one we’ve built, and one we’ll protect. I nod, heading back inside to the family that has given me everything I didn’t know I needed.
