CHAPTER 230
CHAPTER 230
AMARA
With shaking arms, Alaric eased me back down onto the mattress, careful even now—like I was made of glass he was terrified of cracking.
The sheets were cool against my overheated skin, a sharp contrast to the furnace of his body.
He slid out of me slowly, both of us hissing at the loss, the sudden emptiness making my core clench around nothing.
A soft, involuntary whimper escaped me, and he pressed a gentle kiss to my forehead before collapsing beside me on his back.
My breathing was still erratic—sharp, uneven pulls of air that stabbed little needles into my chest with every inhale.
My lungs burned, my heart hammered against my ribs like it was trying to break free, but none of it mattered.
The satisfaction humming through every inch of me drowned out the ache.
My skin tingled, oversensitive and flushed, marked in all the places his mouth and hands had claimed.
I placed one trembling palm flat against my sweaty chest, feeling the wild thump beneath my ribs, grounding myself in the rhythm.
I opened my eyes—slowly, like they were weighted—and turned my head on the pillow.
Alaric was already staring at me.
His hair was a disaster—dark strands sticking up in every direction, mussed from my fingers yanking and twisting through it.
Sweat glistened along his brow, his cheekbones, the hollow of his throat. His lips were swollen, red from kissing, from biting, from everything.
But his eyes… his eyes were soft.
Warm brown now, gold mostly faded, watching me like I was the only thing in the universe that still made sense.
He smiled—brief, small, almost shy—then turned his head to look up at the ceiling, chest still rising and falling too fast.
A low chuckle rumbled out of him, rough and breathless.
“I think the whole castle heard you scream my name,” he said, voice uneven, still cracked from the way he’d roared when he came.
Heat flooded my cheeks instantly—embarrassment crashing through the haze of pleasure.
My hand flew to my mouth like I could trap the sound retroactively.
“Oh my god,” I whispered, mortified.
“I did not—”
“You did.” His chuckle deepened, turning into a tired, affectionate laugh.
“Loud. Multiple times. Pretty sure the guards outside are either traumatized or taking notes.”
I groaned, burying my face in his shoulder, cheeks burning.
“Kill me now.”
He laughed again—soft, warm—and wrapped one arm around me, pulling me closer until my head tucked under his chin.
“Nah. I like you alive. And loud. Very loud.”
I swatted his chest weakly. “You’re the worst.”
“You love me.”
“Unfortunately.”
We lay there for a minute—sweaty, tangled, hearts slowly coming back down from the frantic race they’d been running.
His arm tightened around me, fingers tracing lazy circles on my bare back.
I could feel the steady thump of his pulse against my cheek, strong and sure, and it calmed something deep inside me I hadn’t even realized was still shaking.
But then I felt it.
The shift.
The way his body went from relaxed to rigid in the space of one breath. The way his fingers stilled on my back.
The way his gaze stayed fixed on the ceiling, unblinking, like he was seeing something far beyond the rafters.
Tension rolled off him in waves—quiet, controlled, but unmistakable. His jaw clenched.
His breathing changed—deeper, more deliberate, like he was forcing it to stay even.
I could almost hear the gears turning in his head, the plans, the contingencies, the thousand ways he was still trying to keep me safe.
I lifted my head slowly, propping myself up on one elbow so I could see his face.
His eyes were distant—focused inward, calculating.
His brow furrowed just slightly, lips pressed into a thin line.
He was still here, still holding me, but part of him had already left—gone back to the war room, back to the maps, back to the threat that had kept him away from me all day.
I didn’t need the mind-link to know where his thoughts had gone.
He was thinking about Master.
About the plans.
The risks.
The what-ifs.
I could almost see them playing behind his eyes—the maps, the pins, the timelines, the endless calculations of how to keep me safe when every move felt like a gamble.
How to protect me when the enemy was ancient, patient, and had already proven he could slip through cracks we didn’t even know existed.
My heart squeezed.
I reached up, cupping his face with both hands, thumbs brushing along the sharp line of his cheekbones until his gaze finally flickered down to meet mine.
“Hey,” I whispered, soft but firm.
“Stop.”
He blinked—once, slowly—like he was coming back from somewhere far away.
“Stop worrying,” I said, holding his face steady so he couldn’t look away.
“Everything’s going to be okay.”
His eyes searched mine—raw, vulnerable in a way he rarely let anyone see.
His throat worked.
“Amara—”
“No,” I cut him off gently, pressing my forehead to his.
“Listen to me,” I whispered, gripping his face so he had no choice but to look at me.
“We’re here. Right now. We’re breathing. We’re together. Nothing else matters in this moment.”
My voice trembled, but I didn’t let it break.
“You are the strongest, most loyal man I’ve ever known,” I went on, my thumb brushing his cheek.
“You’ve fought through everything this world has thrown at you."
I held his gaze, refusing to let him look away.
“And you’ll do it again. We’ll face whatever’s coming together—just like we always do.”
My fingers tightened slightly against his skin, my voice soft but fierce.
“You’re terrifying when you need to be… but you’re also the man who protects, who endures, who never backs down.”
A small, breathless smile touched my lips.
“And somehow, you’re still the most beautiful man I’ve ever seen.”
I leaned closer, our foreheads almost touching.
“So stop looking at me like this is the end,” I murmured.
“Because it’s not. Not while we’re still standing. Not while we still have each other.”
A muscle jumped in his jaw.
“I can’t lose you,” he whispered, voice cracking on the words.
“I can’t. If he gets anywhere near you—if he takes you—”
He won’t,” I said firmly, thumbs stroking the sharp line of his cheekbones, feeling the tension locked in his jaw beneath my touch.
“He won’t get to me. Because you’re going to stop him.”
His eyes searched mine—still raw, still haunted—but I didn’t look away. I held his gaze like it was the only thing keeping us both steady.
“You’re drawing him out,” I continued, voice soft but unwavering.
“You’re building the trap. And when he finally shows his face—when he thinks he’s got the upper hand—you’re going to end him. I know it. I feel it. Deep down, in that place where the bond lives, where I can sense you even when you’re miles away. I feel your strength. Your resolve. Your fury. And it’s bigger than his. It always has been.”
I leaned closer, forehead pressing gently to his, letting our breaths mingle.
“You’re not alone in this, Alaric. You’ve never been alone. You’ve got the packs from all over the world behind you now—Alper, Andrew, Alex, Matt, Dominic, every alpha who looked you in the eye tonight and said ‘we’re in.’ They’re not just following orders. They’re fighting for the same future you are. For the balance. For their own mates, their own children, their own packs. And they trust you to lead them. They trust you.
I pause.
“You’ve got me,” I whispered.
“Right here. Right now. Not some fragile thing waiting to be saved—I’m right here with you. Fighting in my own way. Holding on to you the same way you’re holding on to me.
You’ve got every wolf who’s ever sworn loyalty to you ready to tear through the night at your word.”
I pulled back just enough to look at him again—really look—watching the storm in his eyes start to settle, even if only a little.
“And I know,” I said, voice trembling just a fraction,
“I know you will do everything in your power—every brutal, ruthless, beautiful thing—to bring Master to his end. You won’t stop. You won’t hesitate. You won’t let him win. Because that’s who you are. That’s who you’ve always been. The alpha who fights like hell for what’s his. And I’m yours. Completely. Irrevocably. So stop worrying okay.
Let the plan do its work. Because we’re going to win this. Together.”
A muscle flexed in his jaw. His eyes glistened for half a second—gone so fast I almost missed it—before he closed them, exhaling a long, trembling breath against my lips.
“I love you,” he whispered again, voice hoarse and cracked.
“So fucking much"
I smiled—small, watery—and pressed my forehead to his once more.
“I love you too,” I breathed.
“And that’s why I know we’re going to make it. Because love like this? It doesn’t lose. It fights. It survives. It wins.”
He wrapped both arms around me then—tight, almost crushing—pulling me flush against his chest like he could shield me from every shadow still waiting outside that door.
I buried my face in his neck, breathing him in—pine, smoke, sweat, him—and let myself sink into the warmth of him, the steady thud of his heart beneath my cheek.
We stayed like that for a long time—tangled together, breathing in sync, hearts slowly calming.
The world outside could wait.
Master could wait.
For now—for this quiet, stolen moment—there was just us.
And that was enough.
More than enough.
