Chapter 27: The Unveiling
Chapter 27: The Unveiling
Ivy’s POV
He stood there, waiting.
I could feel the weight of his gaze, steady, unyielding, as if he already knew I was about to hand him something heavy and didn’t yet know if he wanted to carry it.
My mouth opened, but the words caught in my throat.
How do you tell someone like Lucien that you’ve been lying?
How do you tell him that the woman he was so keen on protecting..... was keeping something as life-altering as this from him?
I looked down, my hand still resting over my stomach like a silent confession.
“I.…” My voice cracked. I cleared it and tried again. “Lucien, there’s something I’ve been meaning to tell you for a while now. Something important.”
His brow furrowed slightly. “I’m listening.”
“I haven’t been honest with you. Not entirely,” I whispered, eyes fixed on the ground. “Not because I didn’t want to be, but because I didn’t know how. I was scared.”
The wind rustled softly through the tree above us, carrying the scent of pine and night air. I could feel the earth beneath my boots, steady and solid, even as my world tilted
His expression remained unresdable. He said nothing, just watched me, letting me have the silence I needed to find my voice.
I forced myself to look up at him.
“Back when I came to this pack, I didn’t just leave a life behind. I left … people. I left someone who..." My hand pressed tighter to my stomach. “Someone who left something behind with me.”
His eyes narrowed slightly. “What are you trying to say, Ivy?”
I took a step closer, heart thundering in my chest. I could barely breathe.
“I’m.....”
“Alpha!”
The sudden shout shattered the moment like glass against stone.
We both turned as Dorian sprinted toward us from the edge of the woods, his face pale and urgent. My stomach dropped.
Lucien’s entire posture shifted, his jaw tensed, shoulders straightened, instincts kicking in immediately.
“What is it?” Lucien demanded, stepping away from me.
“There’s something you need to see. Now. It’s urgent.”
Dorian’s tone left no room for hesitation.
Lucien turned back to me briefly, his eyes flicking to mine. “We’ll talk later.”
And then he was gone, vanishing into the trees with Dorian without another word.
I stood there, staring after him, the stars blinking above me like distant witnesses.
My arms dropped limply to my sides, and for the first time that day, I felt cold.
So close.
I had been so close to telling him.
But fate.… fate wasn’t ready yet.
Or maybe I wasn’t.
I looked down at the ground, then back up at the darkness where Lucien had disappeared.
“Later,” I whispered to myself. “I’ll tell him later.”
But deep down, I wasn’t sure if I truly believed that.
......
The morning air was sharp, cutting through the fog that clung to the pack grounds like a shroud. A silent heaviness settled over everyone as we gathered, shoulders hunched, breaths quiet, as if the earth itself was holding its breath.
Lucien had summoned everyone for an emergency pack meeting and everyone had gathered regardless of how early it was.
Lucien stood tall on the raised podium, his eyes scanning the sea of wolves before him. Beside him, Dorian had a firm grip on Hadley, who was bound in silver-laced chains, her skin blistering where the metal touched. Her hair was disheveled, eyes wild, pride still pulsing through every trembling breath she took.
“She tried to escape from the dungeon last night,” Lucien announced, voice cold and clear. “But her efforts were futile. She has been captured yet again.”
A murmur passed through the pack, but no one dared to speak out. Everyone knew what was coming. Lucien’s fury radiated from him like heat from a wildfire, his aura choking tbe very air we breathed.
He continued. “In this pack, loyalty is not a request, it is a demand. It is what binds us, what separates us from the beasts that tear each other apart for scraps. Hadley was trusted. She was elevated. And she broke that trust.”
My heart pounded in my chest. I stood toward the front, only a few feet from the podium, every inch of me tense. I could barely hear through the rushing in my ears.
Lucien’s voice dropped lower, dangerous. “As Alpha, I pass judgment. Hadley will be stripped of her Beta rank. She will take her place as an Omega, a servant. From this day forward, she will answer to the very wolves she once looked down upon.”
The gasp from the crowd was immediate, sharp.
“No!” Hadley screamed, struggling in the chains. “No, you can't do this to me! I served you, Lucien! I protected you! I stood by your side when no one else did!”
Lucien didn’t even blink.
Hadley’s voice broke as she shrieked, “And all this, for what? For her? For some stranger who slithered her way into this pack?”
She turned her blazing eyes on me, and I froze.
The weight of her stare was suffocating.
“She’s a traitor,” she spat, her voice full of venom. “None of you ever stopped to wonder why the Blackwood pack was rumored to have placed a bounty on her head?”
The crowd stirred. A few wolves looked at each other in confusion. Lucien’s eyes narrowed.
Hadley laughed bitterly, cruelly. “It’s because she’s carrying the child of Blackwood’s Alpha! That’s right, she’s pregnant! With his child. And you welcomed her like she was one of us?”
There was a thick, deafening, and absolute silence
My breath caught in my throat.
No one moved. Not even Lucien.
I felt my body go cold, as if someone had dumped a bucket of ice down my spine. My legs threatened to give out beneath me. My fingers instinctively curled over my stomach, protective, but it was too late.
It was out.
Everything I had hidden. Everything I feared. Exposed in one vicious scream.
Hadley panted like a beast in chains, triumphant in her devastation. “She lied to you all. And you call me the traitor?”
I couldn’t breathe. The world swayed around me. The stares. The silence. The weight of it all pressing down on my chest.
Then.… Lucien turned.
His eyes found mine, and the look in them wasn’t anger. Not yet. It was disbelief.
Hurt.
Betrayal.
