Chapter 25: The Fall of a Wolf
Chapter 25: The Fall of a Wolf
Ivy’s POV
We marched through the heart of the pack, drawing a crowd almost instantly.
Whispers rippled like wildfire.
Hadley, one of the pack's strongest warriors, was being dragged through the streets in silver cuffs, bloodied, bruised, and burning with hatred.
Dorian stayed close to Mira’s family, ensuring they were protected, while I kept a firm grip on Hadley's arm.
She hissed at me under her breath, but I didn’t flinch.
I wouldn't give her that satisfaction.
The pack parted as we approached the center of the grounds, where Lucien stood, tall and grim as a stone statue.
His arms were folded, his face unreadable, but his aura crackled with dominance.
I shoved Hadley forward
She stumbled to to her knees at his feet, still breathing hard but refusing to lower her head.
For a long moment, Lucien just stared at her.
The silence was suffocating.
Finally, his voice cut through the thick air like a blade.
"Hadley."
Her name was nothing but ice on his tongue.
"You," he said slowly, "who I trusted.... who I raised into my highest ranks..."
His golden eyes flashed with barely contained fury.
"You were supposed to protect this pack. Protect me. And this...." he gestured to Mira’s family, to the wounded wolves, to the broken trust hanging heavy in the air... "this is how you repay it?"
Hadley's jaw clenched.
"I didn’t..." she started, but Lucien cut her off with a low growl that made the entire pack bow their heads instinctively.
"No more lies," he said, voice lethal.
For a second, Hadley just knelt there, trembling with rage.
And then, she snapped.
"I did it because I love you!" she screamed, her voice cracking with emotion.
"I’ve always loved you, Lucien! Since our days training together before you were crowned Alpha!"
Gasps echoed across the pack grounds.
Even Dorian’s brows shot up.
Hadley surged to her feet, despite the cuffs biting into her wrists.
"I gave everything for you," she snarled.
"I bled for you. I killed for you. And you...." she turned and glared at me, hatred pouring off her like acid.
"You threw it all away for her. A stranger. A nobody. You barely even know her yet you held her at a higher esteem than you've ever held me!"
The pack shifted uneasily.
I stood my ground, meeting her poisonous gaze without blinking.
Lucien didn’t so much as glance at me.
His furious attention remained locked on Hadley.
"You betrayed everything this pack stands for," he said, voice low and dangerous.
"And you betrayed me."
Hadley let out a bitter, broken laugh.
"I would've done anything for you," she whispered.
"And yet, you chose her."
Lucien stepped forward.
The weight of his authority was crushing now, forcing everyone to their knees, even the strongest among us.
"You chose this path yourself," he said coldly.
"Love does not excuse betrayal.
Jealousy does not excuse bloodshed."
Hadley didn’t resist when two warriors came forward to seize her.
Maybe she knew there was nothing left to fjght for.
Maybe she knew she’d already lost.
Lucien turned away from her then, dismissing her like a shadow.
His eyes found mine, steady, unreadable, and for a brief, heart-pounding moment, I saw the storm raging behind them.
He was hurting.
And for the first time since I’d met him....
I realized that maybe Lucien’s armor wasn’t as invincible as it seemed.
He trusted few.
And he had been betrayed by one of the only ones he dared to trust.
"Take her to the dungeons," he said, voice clipped.
"And she does not leave until I say so." he added with a glimmer of finality
The warriors dragged Hadley away, her head bowed at last.
Around me, the pack shifted, the weight of the betrayal settling heavily on their shoulders.
And Lucien....
Lucien just stood there for a long time, the firelight flickering over his grim face, as if mourning a piece of himself that had just died.
I didn’t speak.
I just stood silently beside him, offering him what little strength I could.
Because sometimes, even the strongest alphas needed someone to remind them that loyalty still existed.
Even if it came from the most unexpected place.
.....
The pack grounds were almost empty now, the once buzzing center of activity swallowed by a heavy, uneasy silence.
I wandered slowly, searching for him.
I knew he wouldn’t have gone far.
Not tonight.
Not after everything.
Finally, I spotted him, off in the distance, beneath the sprawling limbs of a lone oak tree near the edge of the training fields.
Lucien sat there, his back against the trunk, one knee drawn up, the other stretched out, head tilted back to the stars.
He looked so…. lost.
It was strange seeing him like this.
Not as the fierce Alpha.
Not as the commanding presence who ruled the pack with strength and discipline.
But as a man.
Just a man.
For a second, I almost turned away.
This moment seemed too raw, too private.
But something tugged at me, deeper than reason.
I crossed the grass quietly, the dew wetting my bare feet.
He didn’t move as I approached, didn’t even glance at me.
Maybe he already knew it was me.
Maybe he didn’t care.
I hesitated a few feet away, uncertain.
Then I sat down across from him, giving him space, but not leaving.
The breeze stirred the leaves above us, whispering secrets we couldn’t say out loud.
Lucien finally spoke, his voice low and rough.
"I trusted her."
"I know," I said softly.
He let out a short, humorless laugh, like the idea of trusting anyone was something he should’ve outgrown long ago.
"Trust," he muttered, rolling the word around like it tasted bitter.
"It’s golden.
Rare.
Sacred."
He dragged a hand through his hair, his jaw clenching.
"And it’s why betrayal cuts deeper than any blade."
I didn’t say anything.
I just listened.
Because sometimes words weren't what someone needed.
Lucien turned his head, finally looking at me.
His eyes glowed faintly in the darkness, gold flecks catching the starlight.
"I've come to trust you too Ivy, if you lie to me, just like Hadley," he said, voice quieter but no less sharp, "you'll become dead to me."
The words weren’t a threat.
They were a promise.
My breath caught in my throat.
I shifted slightly, my hand moving instinctively to my stomach, so lightly, so subtly that he didn’t notice.
At least, I hoped he didn’t.
The weight of the secret inside me felt unbearable for a moment.
As if it might burst out without my permission.
I was lying to him already.
Not with words.
But with silence.
I wasn’t just Ivy, the stray he rescued from the rain.
I was carrying a child.
The child of the man Lucien probably hated most in this world, the ruthless Alpha of Blackwood Pack. Alpha Kael.
And sooner or later….
Lucien would find out.
And when he did....
I didn’t know if he would look at me the same way ever again.
Maybe he wouldn’t look at me at all.
I wrapped my arms around myself, forcing my breathing to steady.
"I would never betray you," I whispered.
It wasn’t a lie.
Not in my heart.
But the truth looming ahead felt like a blade already poised above my head.
Lucien studied me for a long, searching moment.
And then, to my surprise, he sighed and leaned back against the tree again.
"I want to believe that," he said quietly.
"I really do."
Silence stretched between us, thick but strangely not uncomfortable.
And under the blanket of stars, with the world still spinning far beyond our small corner of it, I made a vow to myself:
I would find a way to tell him.
When the time was right.
When I could find the words.
Because iff Lucien valued trust above all else....
I couldn’t survive in this pack much longer living a lie.
