Chapter 10: The Unexpected Smile
Chapter 10: The Unexpected Smile
Ivy’s POV
I lost track of how long I’d been in that room. Maybe hours. Maybe more.
Time seemed to slow down when fear clung to to your bones.
I paced the floor restlessly, wearing a path into the wooden boards. At first, I’d sat on the edge of the bed, trying to stay calm. But the silence became unbearable, thick and suffocating.
Was this a test? Were they watching me? Waiting for me to break?
I kept glancing at the locked door, flinching at every distant footstep. My body was exhausted, still recovering from the snakebite, but sleep wouldn’t come.
Not here. Not while I didn’t know if I’d live to see another sunrise.
And then—
The door creaked open.
I went still. My heart slammed against my ribs as the shadow stepped inside.
Alpha Lucien.
He was taller than I remembered, broader now that I wasn’t staring up at him from a field while half-conscious. His presence filled the room like a storm, thick, charged, and undeniable.
I had never seen a man so commanding. His midnight-black hair was slicked back neatly, and his sharp jaw looked like it had been carved from stone. There was something ancient in his eyes, something brutal and sharp beneath the surface, like a predator that never slept.
I wanted to stand tall, meet his gaze without flinching.
But the truth was..... I was scared.
This was it.
I’d trespassed onto Crescent Moon territory. I had no wolf. No allies. No status.
There was no way they’d let someone like me live.
I straightened my shoulders anyway, lifting my chin even as my knees threatened to give out.
If I was going to die, I’d face it head-on.
Alpha Lucien stepped further into the room… and then, to my shock, he smiled.
Not a cruel smirk. Not the twisted grin of someone about to toy with their prey.
A real smile. Controlled, calm… almost warm.
“I hope we didnt scare you” His voice was deep, rough, but not unkind. “Forgive the manner in which you were brought in.”
I blinked, momentarily stunned.
“I…” I hesitated. “You’re not going to kill me?”
That seemed to amuse him. His smile lingered as he shook his head slightly.
“No,” he said simply. “Though my warriors seemed eager to, didn’t they?”
I didn’t answer.
He let out a short breath, something like a sigh. “They aren’t used to strangers crossing our borders. Especially not ones who appear out of nowhere, unconscious and injured. Our pack has… enemies.”
I stayed silent, still trying to process his unexpected demeanor.
“I would’ve come to see you sooner,” he continued, “but I was tied up in a series of emergency meetings. Rogue activity near the eastern ridge. Timing’s been less than ideal.”
He crossed the room and leaned against the wall, folding his arms across his chest. His gaze, though still sharp, didn’t feel threatening. Just… curious.
“I imagine you have questions,” he said. “But before that—tell me, what is your name and how did you end up here, Ivy?”
His voice was steady, like he genuinely wanted to understand.
I didn’t answer right away. My guard was still up. Trust didn’t come easily anymore.
But for the first time in a long time… someone was asking. Not barking orders. Not punishing me.
Just asking.
And I wasn’t sure why… but I found myself wanting to answer.
Even if my voice trembled. Even if the truth was hard.
“My name is Ivy Sinclair and I didn’t mean to come here,” I said softly. “I didn’t even know where I was going. I just… ran. I had to.”
He studied me in silence, his eyes narrowing slightly, not in suspicion, but like he was reading something deeper.
I clutched my arms around myself, suddenly feeling exposed beneath his scrutiny.
“I’m not a threat,” I added. “I just want to protect my baby.”
Something shifted in his expression.
A pause.
Then, almost gently, he said, “You’ll find that Crescent Moon is not without compassion. But trust is earned here, Ivy. Slowly.”
I nodded, unsure what else to say.
He pushed off the wall and walked to the door, resting a hand on the knob before pausing.
“You’ll stay here for now,” he said. “You’re not a prisoner… but don’t try to leave. Not until we understand more about who you are… and what danger you might bring, even unknowingly.”
His voice was still calm, but layered with warning.
“Rest,” he added, his tone softening again. “You’re safe here. For now.”
And with that, he walked out, closing the door behind him.
This time, it didn’t lock.
But the weight of his presence remained in the air long after he left.
Alpha Lucien…
He hadn’t killed me.
He smiled.
But something told me he was not a man to cross. Not ever.
And now, I had to figure out what exactly I had walked into, because this pack was dangerous… and its Alpha even more so.
I sat on the edge of the bed, still stunned.
Alive.
I was still breathing.
It didn’t feel real. My hands trembled slightly as I pressed them into the mattress, grounding myself, as if the very air around me might vanish and take me with it.
Alpha Lucien hadn’t killed me.
I tell myself again
He’d smiled. Spoke with calm words. Offered what could almost be mistaken for… understanding.
But why?
Men like him, Alpha-born, cold-eyed, raised with power in their blood, didn’t smile at trespassers. They didn’t offer apologies for rough treatment. They didn’t speak kindly or leave doors unlocked.
No, they destroyed people like me.
So why was I still here? Still breathing?
I curled my legs onto the bed, wrapping my arms around myself, suddenly very aware of how exposed I was even in this simple room.
Was he just being miraculously kind? That didn’t make sense. Crescent Moon was known across the region for being ruthless and unwelcoming. I’d heard whispers, even back at my pack, about how their warriors trained to kill without question. About how trespassers disappeared without a trace.
So why did he spare me?
My eyes drifted to the door again. It was shut now, not locked. But that didn’t mean freedom.
Was this mercy… or something else?
A darker thought stirred in the back of my mind, one I couldn’t shake.
What if there was a reason he was keeping me alive?
Some hidden motive. Some plan I wasn’t a part of but had become tangled in.
Was I a pawn in something bigger?
Or worse… was he waiting? Waiting for the right time to break me down, piece by piece, until I couldn’t run anymore?
I looked down at my stomach, resting my hand gently over the soft rise of it.
No.
Whatever he wanted, whatever the reason, this wasn’t just about me anymore.
I would survive. For my baby. For the tiny heartbeat that still fluttered inside me, a stubborn rhythm that defied every horrible thing that had happened so far.
I didn’t know who Alpha Lucien truly was… but I’d find out.
Kind or cruel, savior or captor, he had spared my life.
But trust?
That would take far more than a smile from him.
