Chapter 3 - My wolf is out
Janine.
“Dude. I have been searching everywhere for you. We have a game to play, come on hurry. It’s starting in five minutes.” Dale shouted from the door.
“I thought it was canceled?” Kaden's frown deepened.
“Not that, this is a friendly game. Why are you in a study group? You are the last person I expected to study.”
“Gotta prove you wrong,“ He started to pack his notebook, and when he turned, I darted my gaze elsewhere and pretended as if I wasn’t just staring at him.
I didn’t want any attention to myself, and the teacher making me the leader of a study group was more than I could handle. I didn’t know why she did that when she was aware that I couldn’t speak.
“Janine, wanna watch me play? I mean watch the game, maybe lighten your sunken face a little.” He was teasing me. I wonder why he wanted to touch me, earlier.
He smirked.
“C’mon hurry.” Dale groaned. and pulled him out of the classroom.
“Want to come?” Mira asked, staring at me. She closed her notebook and put it into her bag.
“I created a group chat, and give me your phone number so I can add you to it. It’s for our study group.”
I shook my head. She raised a brow at me, I reached out to my pen and wrote on my jotter.
“You don’t have a phone.” She read it out.
The one I was using at home was destroyed that night, and I didn’t have a phone.
“Who doesn’t have a phone at this...”She stopped talking and sighed.
“Are you going for the game?”
I shook my head again and I wrote down.
“You are going home. Why?”
I couldn’t answer that, our driver was coming to pick me up at 4 pm. Everyone knows I was adopted because the Beta family is a nice family that took in a homeless little girl. I have to be at home before anyone else.
“Come on, I will take you there. It only for a minute.”
I glanced at my wristwatch. I have ten minutes to spare before our driver comes.
I nodded picked up my bag, and followed Amira out of the class.
We were at the basketball court, and the game was already on. Stephane was in front cheering the guys on.
I sat down and watched them play, Kaden’s eyes were searching around the court as if he was looking for someone.
He stopped when his gaze met mine, his lips quirked, staring intently at me, I swallowed hard at his intense gaze, and I could feel eyes on me, why was he making it obvious that he was staring at me?
I forgot about the time and ended up watching the basketball game till it was over, and Kaden’s team won. It did bring a smile to my face, I couldn’t remember the last time I smiled.
They cheered with his name, and I heard his next match was with Dark Rivers High School from another pack.
When I remembered that I was supposed to be home by now, it was past six in the evening.
“Janine. I thought you...” I was stopped by Kaden when I wanted to leave.
I wanted to run past him, but he held my arm and pulled me back.
“Where are you going?” He asked.
I struggle to get his hand off me. He should let me go.
“Are you dumb, can’t you talk?” His grip tightened on me. “You came, you should at least...”
I stepped on his feet.
“Ah. What was that for?”
He let go of my hand, I blinked my eyes and ran. I just want to go far away from him.
I found our driver at the car park waiting for me, I ran to him.
He glared at me, I know he wanted me to hit me but because we were in school, he restrained himself from doing such, and opened the car door.
I got in.
“Where have you been? You should have been home at 4 pm.” Mom accosted me the moment I stepped into the house. She has been waiting in the living room.
I wanted to say I lost track of time but I didn’t say anything or make any attempt to write down an excuse.
She stood up slowly.
“I regretted taking you away from the orphanage but still you’ve made the pack members respect our family.”
Family?
They were ashamed to show me as part of their family except it’s for publicity. I was never taken as part of their family.
“You never listen do you?” She grabbed my ears. “I told you we have somewhere to be today. Well, you’ve given me reasons to have you locked up in your room and you won’t attend the dinner with the Alpha Family.” And then she snapped them and pushed me.
“You want to know why you were abandoned? It’s because nobody wants you.” She yelled.
I staggered a few steps back and maintained my balance.
“Don’t glare at me!” She screamed and hurled the vase on the table on my forehead.
I crashed to the ground when the vase hit me. “Lower your gaze, you witch! I did everything to make your talk, we wasted money for years, different teachers and therapists. Yet nothing, you’re so pathetic!” She shouted and wanted to hit me again when a voice stopped her.
“That's enough, let’s get ready to leave.”
Dad was home.
“We can’t keep the Alpha waiting, where is Stephane? The seamstress is here with her dress for tonight,”
“Oh honey, you’re the best.” Mom chuckled and lifted her gown with both hands, I heard the sound of her heels clicking further away.
I stood up from the ground and cleaned up the broken vase, my forehead was bleeding, and was running down my face.
I was done cleaning and took some ice from the kitchen and walked down to the basement where my room was.
The moment I got in, the door was locked from the outside.
I sat on the wooden ground beside my small bed and treated the wound on my forehead. I stared at the window and sniffed.
I just needed to find my mate so I could leave this house. I didn’t think I would be able to survive here.
I wiped my eyes and watched the moon crawl out of the clouds, it was a full moon.
I exhaled and drew my legs to my chest.
I felt a sharp pain in my head, and the ice fell out of my hand.
I groaned and placed my hands on the ground. I squinted my eyes as the pain persisted. I heard my bones cracking, and adjusting, my skin was covered with brown furs, and my fangs came out, and then my claws. I grew bigger than my bed size.
A howl shot out of my throat as I stared at the moon.
The wound on my forehead healed up, and my body suddenly slumped to the ground. I could sense it, the fragrance of my mate in the house.
He was close but I couldn’t lift myself from the ground, another howl came out of my mouth and my eyes closed.
‘Mate.’
