Chapter 7 Celeste
Celeste's POV
My eyes followed a dry leaf as it drifted by, gracefully falling to the ground.
The air was cool and brisk. The sun wasn't particularly enthusiastic about shining on my group.
The Black Birds Group headquarters was built in a forest far from the werewolf, rogue, and lycan clans.
Mm, to be honest, all rogue assassin groups' headquarters are in the middle of nowhere. We keep everything we know hidden.
I turned when the door knocked and saw Beta Dylan walking into my office carrying a file.
His face, so similar to Benedict's, made me almost think he was my mate who had left me forever and was now happily living on the moon.
Dylan had a different smile, gaze, hair color and style than Benedict's. I'd have to remember that.
"I love the autumn air, too," he said, placing the file on my desk.
"It's colder here than the Rogue Clan." I walked over to my desk to pick up the file, my mouth parting as I read the first page.
I stared at Beta Dylan in disbelief. “I’m always impressed by how fast you gather information. And I never have to doubt if it’s true.”
He put on a smug face. "Thank you for admiring us, Alpha." He smiled shyly.
“You know, getting information is the easiest thing for us.” He bragged about himself and the other rogue assassins.
I could never be like them. I just worked behind a desk and was thankful enough that they accepted me as their Alpha until Levi was ready to lead.
I sat on my chair but decided against reading the file because Beta Dylan hadn't left my office yet.
“Is there anything else you want to tell me?” My eyebrow raised. I felt uncomfortable under his gaze.
Even though I was the Alpha, I was still a woman. I was wary of being alone with a man.
“I will never tire of reminding you not to be careless.” I could see the anxiety in his eyes.
It wasn’t just him—everyone in the group grew tense whenever my sons and I met with Alpha Eiden.
“Don’t worry,” I smiled reassuringly. “I will be professional, and keeping this group’s secrets is also my responsibility.”
For hundreds of years, everyone in this group worked as assassins. Many needed them, but many were also after their lives.
Besides selling information, we also often earn money by killing one or more people.
“I advise you not to meet him in public. We’ve heard some people talking about you.” He spoke tensely, his jaw clenched.
“Alpha Eiden isn’t a famous Alpha, but his pack is an enemy of the Mountain Twins Pack and the River Oval Pack.” He looked at me seriously, asking me to think about it carefully.
“Alpha Eiden mentioned that yesterday. He’ll be wearing a mask and a hat,” I said.
“I knew that wouldn’t be enough.” I hurried on before Beta Dylan could cut in. “His werewolf and Alpha scent will still draw attention.”
He nodded.
“I’ll discuss this with Liam, since he’s the one who decided where we’ll meet him,” I said, confused.
I didn’t know when the right time was to talk to Liam about it. I hadn’t even mentioned Alpha Eiden wanting Liam to stay in his pack for a day.
Beta Dylan left my office. I hope he's not just focused on his work. He needs to find his mate.
I leaned back in my chair and read the file in silence.
Can you guess what I'm reading?
You're wrong if you think I'm reading a file containing information my members have gathered about one of the werewolf packs.
I was reading a file about Alpha Eiden. Why was it printed on paper? I didn’t know, and I had forgotten to ask Beta Dylan the reason.
“Wow, this file is comprehensive. They even wrote down all of Alpha Eiden’s exes, where they met, when they started dating, and when they broke up.”
I wondered how my members knew such personal information.
“He’s had four ex-girlfriends in the past six years.”
We met six years ago. Back then, he rejected me because he was so in love with his girlfriend. So why did they break up?
I thought he was loyal to his partner.
I laughed sarcastically.
Now I know the real reason he rejected me: he didn't like me. All of his ex-girlfriends were fashion models with beautiful faces and hourglass bodies.
I frowned. Why was I even thinking about that? To hell with his reasons for rejecting me.
I probably wouldn't have met Benedict if he hadn't rejected me.
I'm happy, and my life is perfect because of Benedict.
"He just broke up with his girlfriend a month ago. They'd been dating for two years and were about to get engaged, but she broke up with him without any explanation."
So right now, he hasn’t found his second mate, has no girlfriend, and isn’t close to any woman.
This is risky for me. I don’t want anyone assuming I’m his girlfriend. People would surely start looking into me.
Alpha Eiden and I have to do something before something bad happens.
“He didn’t look into me. He must have forgotten. Yeah, I don’t expect him to remember me either.”
I was lost in thought, my brows furrowed. How did he know about Liam?
Alpha Eiden had no reason to come to the rogue clan. There’s no way he suddenly got a feeling that led him to Liam’s kindergarten.
'You'll have to ask him,' my wolf voice echoed in my head. 'But it doesn't matter to me.'
"No. It does." I sat up straight and placed the file with the five sheets of paper on the table.
"I need to know where he got his information about Liam. I'm sure I'll know why he's so insistent on getting close to Liam."
I know I should be glad Alpha Eiden hasn't abandoned Liam. He trusts me and recognizes Liam as his biological son.
But still, I can't help but be suspicious of him. I won't let him take Liam away from me.
'I'm sure Liam would fight if his biological father tried to separate you and him,' my wolf said, reassuring me a little.
I was done with Alpha Eiden’s file. Now I knew him and his pack. At least it didn’t include things like his favorite food, drinks, or hobbies.
I checked my emails on my laptop screen. So many people wanted to buy information from us, and so many wanted us to find the information they needed.
One email caught my attention. Alpha Johannes of the Black Forest Group asked us about the mastermind behind the virus that infected the children of the rogue clan leaders, including his son.
“Oh, so they’re accusing a group of assassins of creating and spreading the virus?”
This was my eighth day as an Alpha, and I was annoyed to learn that many people were slandering our group for doing this and that just because our primary job was to kill for money.
"How can Benedict not be angry with them? It's easy for him to send our members to kill them in the dark of night without leaving a trace," I grumbled.
I was interested in doing it, but my members disagreed.
Killing all those rogue Alphas who viciously slandered us would only make us even more hunted.
\[Good afternoon. I'm sorry to bother you. May I ask what Liam is doing right now?\]
I read and reluctantly replied to Alpha Eiden's text. He showed concern for Liam, but I was uncomfortable.
Yeah, what could I do? I don't allow Liam to have a cell phone yet. I just have to get used to it.
