Chapter 37
*Alpha Calle
"She is too fast! Isn’t she?" Dark commented as we ran after her, still not able to catch her. She would vanish out of my sight at every turn. Even though I tried catching up to her, for the last and final time, she was far away from me. Only her scent left a trail behind me to follow and continue my quick pace.
I tried to mind-link with her, but this stubborn she-wolf shut me out every time. She was getting on my nerves and surely needed punishment, in our bedroom. After I got to know about Lennon and his motives for my Luna, I intended to keep her safe with me for every minute that passed between us. I wanted to keep her hidden inside the pack with security at the gate until I dealt with Lennon.
I sped up across the woods and followed her scent. It was nothing to be worried about, but then I got a whiff of some foreign creatures around her too. The bloodsuckers, not the normal or pitiful humans.
'Vampires!' Dark roared in my head like a thunderstorm.
Fear thudded in my chest, realizing that our path was actually towards the north, where vampires reside.
My mate was surrounded by bloodthirsty vampires and was alone. She had never fought on her own before. Not that I doubted her abilities or skills, but those were cunning creatures, and she was not so skilled to deal with them.
Dark grew more protective of her and dangerously followed her path. All I could see was blood and dead bodies, and my mate standing on her four limbs, growling at the almost-dead vampire crawling away from her. She was winning against them, but the last creature left was more powerful and smart. He ran behind her and slashed her arm, but his movement changed just after that. He took a step back from her and said something to her very slowly. I was seeing red and couldn’t even listen or see anything other than my mate in danger and a threat looming so close to her.
My palms glowed, and flames formed. That's when I directed all of the flames at the vampire, who was standing a safe distance away from her. Within seconds, he was reduced to ashes.
Daphne was already in human form when I gazed in her direction. She was naked, with some dried leaves pasted all over her. I couldn't help but recall that moment I saved her from being almost violated by human hunters outside our pack territory. Although covered with dirt, her body was glorious. I had to earn all of my self-control just to keep myself from turning her into the big three and claiming her right away.
That made Daphne look in my direction with a horrific look on her face as she stared from the vampire’s body to me. I was so relieved and content that she was unharmed and had no serious injuries. She proved herself to me, and I was sure that the pack would love her too.
I wanted to wrap my arms around her and not let her go.
But her words stopped me in my tracks.
"Why did you do that?" She took some steps away from me, as though disgusted by my presence. "You shouldn’t have come! I didn’t even ask for help!"
As much as I wanted to water down my temper, her act just heated the anger in my veins. The only problem was, my libido for this stubborn little Luna only spiked to hunger gear. I wanted to fck her right now until she learned her lesson and became a good girl.
'The bloodsucker was trying to kill you. What am I supposed to do? Watch him murder my mate?' Dark and I roared in unison.
"Yes. if that’s what's best for the pack! They don’t want a useless Luna, anyway!" She snorts derisively.
I took an annoyed breath and said, "Where the hell did you get that idea?" I walked towards her, slowly shifting into human form. However, she turned around and ran away from me for the second time, leaving me badly pissed off.
"I am going to tie her up!" I growled, and Dark agreed with a low snarl.
I began to run after her, but I paused on my track as Beta Degen mind-linked me. It was something serious, as I could feel from the number of attempts he made to connect with me in a second.
"Alpha Calle! Where are you?" Beta Degen asked with panic in his voice.
"I am miles away from the pack borders. What’s wrong?" I asked him.
‘Suzette escaped,’ he said in a hoarse voice, as though he had just gotten off a marathon. ‘Her whole pack was empty when we got there. I tried to mind-link Alpha Uriah, but he too couldn’t be reached.’
"What the hell!" Rage swept through me like wildfire, hearing my beta’s news. I knew this operation wasn’t easy to accomplish since we were dealing with an extraordinary woman. But it bugged me to think that her whole pack was missing as well.
I shut my eyes and took a deep breath. "Look out for her."
"Right away," Beta Degen said.
I nodded. "See you at the packhouse later. For now, I have an important matter to deal with." Daphne’s furious and sexy image was flashing at the back of my mind as I said that. "Bye."
"Wait, Alpha…"
"What?"
"W-we have a bigger problem. On our way to Suzette’s pack, our men—I believe they’d been attacked through their minds."
I didn’t think twice, and I immediately turned around and sprinted toward my territory.
As the Alpha of the pack, my duty was to protect them. I couldn’t be in the woods, running after Daphne, ignoring the needs of my people. Anyway, my mate was fully capable of protecting herself, and like my Luna, she would agree that the safety of the pack comes first.
I shifted to my wolf form as he was faster than me to reach the pack the quickest possible.
I went straight to my office, and Beta Degen was waiting for me with Miss Amelia. I asked both of them to take a seat.
"Beta Degen, prepare the soldiers to guard the borders. Make four groups for the battalion."
He immediately mind-linked with the leaders of various groups in the pack to show up at the meeting ground.
"The order will be followed without any delay." With this being said, he rushed out of the room.
After Beta Degen left, I checked the map of the continent and mentally counted all the entrances. There were more than enough soldiers for each of them, and if I were to use magic, my people could be safe without sacrificing my warriors.
I turned to Miss Amelia with a frown. "Why hadn’t you spread the shield earlier around the pack borders so that the vampires could not cross it?"
Her eyes were already misty even before I explained. "I… I was tricked by one of them. I thought I was talking with my niece. But I found out that I was only hallucinating when the real Kyla knocked on my door. I’m so sorry, Alpha. This is my fault…"
I ran a palm over my face. "If you can put up more shields, do it so we will only be dealing with the scumbags who trespassed our borders. Now go."
I knew my packs could still be safe since I had the best warriors on the continent. But what about Daphne? She was out of my reach and unsafe without being inside the pack borders. I needed to get her back to the pack.
I raised my head and noticed that Miss Amelia was still on the chair, wrapping her arms around herself. She wore a thick office coat, but she seemed to be suffering from a cold. She was even trembling, and pure horror shone in her eyes.
I frowned. "Is there something else you want to tell me?"
"Suzette, she was attacking the school and…"
"And what?"
"Lots of pups and young wolves are hurt. And Daphne—"
"What about Daphne?" Impatience and fear were building in my thudding veins. So Daphne went to the campus. But why?
In the back of my head, I was already contacting Beta Degen, ordering him to head straight to the school. "What the hell do you want to say?" I hit my fist on the table as Miss Amelia gasped.
She shed a few tears and said, "Daphne is dead."
