Chapter Seventy-Nine

Ajax POV

“This is fucking ridiculous,” I groaned.

“I know man what was she even doing here I thought you paid her and she left.”

I rubbed the back of my head and sucked in a sharp breath. Ross and I were at the pack house in the living room waiting for Oscar to come down with Reign.

“I did… you might not want to bring that up in front of Delanie though.”

“Why? How much did you pay her bro?”

“Ugh, Ross.”

He stared at me with raised brows. He wasn’t going to drop the topic.

“Fine, a million dollars.”

Ross’ eyes turned to saucers. He got up and paced to the fireplace.

“A million what?”

I rolled my eyes and leaned back on the couch.

“Are you insane?” Ross raked his hands through his hair. “I didn’t know you had that much money!”

It wasn’t even dent in my wealth but I wasn’t going to say that to him. Rebecca threatened the peace of my family what I paid wasn’t nearly what Delanie and Annika are worth to me.

“Would you give it to me if I asked,” Ross asked hopefully?

I gave him a frustrated look.

“I mean I am your best friend, but Ajax what are they going to think when they learn you did that?”

“I’ll tell them the truth she was demanding reparations. I don’t know what she did with the money. She could have shared it with Decker since they were allies.”

“He could have killed her too. He’s the only other suspect I can think of.”

The sound of the squeaky wheel on Oscar’s wheelchair alerted us to their presence. Reign wheeled her husband in. I was glad she stuck around this long, to be honest, I thought she would have filed for divorce when she learned he was disabled. He’s seeing all the healers in our pack and our tribe packs but we all knew it was pointless. Oscar wasn’t recovering from this.

“Brother I hear you’ve gotten yourself into some shit,” Oscar smirked.

“Nice to see you too Oscar.”

“There’s no proof of Ajax’s involvement he only knows the girl,” Ross cut in.

“Exactly you don’t have my claws on her,” I added.

Reign sighed heavily. “Honestly if you did kill her with your reputation you wouldn’t deny it.”

I frowned at her. I don’t go around killing innocent people.

“We don’t know what exactly killed her. The pack doctor’s supposed to do an autopsy and report back to Decker but he’s pointing the finger,” Reign explained.

“Of course he is.” I made a mistake by destroying his pack but I thought I was avenging the life of my chosen mate and her son. That mistake is back to haunt me.

“Why was she here Ajax? She’s not part of our pack it seems like she was here for you. Aren’t you engaged to Delanie?” Oscar asked a smirk toying at his lips.

My blood boiled when a conversation I had with Rebecca a while ago came back to me.

“She knew you as well,” I said cooly.

Reign stared at her husband with narrowed eyes. Oscar didn’t look fazed.

“I’m the Alpha who doesn’t know me?” he arrogantly asked.

“She came here asking for help years ago. You sent her away. Don’t tell me you don’t remember everyone knows everything to do with Remi.”

Oscar rolled his eyes. “If I turned her away it was because Dad might have told me to. Remember he’s been the Alpha of this pack for a lot longer than me.”

“Why would he do that?” I demanded.

Oscar lifted a shoulder. “Maybe he was trying to spear your feelings. You were in mourning remember?”

I scowled and stood. “There’s nothing for me to do here. Call me when you have all your details. I’ll let you know where I was when she was killed. Try not to mess this up.”

Reign flipped her hair over her shoulder. “I’ve been Alpha for months and we haven’t gone to war once. Safe to say I have not messed anything up.”

We wouldn’t be able to say that if Oscar had been Alpha. Dad came in from time to time to help Reign but most of it had been her. It was impressive.

“Excuse me,” a soft feminine voice grabbed our attention.

Delanie’s friend Shaina stood awkwardly on the threshold holding a large bag.

“Shaina, what are you doing here?” I asked.

“Oh, I’m here for Alpha Oscar. I’m here for his check-ups.”

I nodded. I trusted Shaina more than the healers who pranced in and out of here regularly. Reign asked for a minute before Shaina could meet Oscar in his private chambers. I pulled Shaina aside to get her honest opinion about Oscar’s situation.

“You think he’ll get better?” I asked.

She gave me a pressed smile. “He’s responding to the treatment well but he can’t shift so the healers can’t really treat him. I suggest you don’t hire any more healers. They’re all here for the money. It’s disgusting. They can’t heal him.”

“Can you get him to shift?”

She shook her head. “I’m just a doctor. I suggest you find a really strong witch.”

“He’s ready,” Reign called.

She gave me a small smile before climbing upstairs to Oscar’s room.

I couldn’t wait to get home. I missed my daughter. She should be awake by now Annika was a night owl. Ross clapped his hand on my shoulder.

“Come with me to the murder scene,” Ross said.

“Why?”

“We found something. It could be the murder weapon.”

“I’m a suspect, Ross,” I reminded him.

“You’re the Alpha General too.”

I lifted a shoulder. “Good point.” I’d rather be at home with Delanie and Annika but knowing Harvey was with them calmed me.

There was a murderer out there. I would sleep a little easier if the fucker was caught.
