Chapter 54
Scarlet Wolff
The only thing on my mind was to get the hell out of that godforsaken place, and thankfully, we were soon out.
I rested my head on the headrest, closing my eyes as Lucien drove down the road. I could feel his gaze on me almost every passing second, but I didn't spare him a glance.
I had no idea how long we were on the road for, but I only opened my eyes when the car stopped moving, and I realised that we had arrived at his apartment when I opened my eyes.
Finally!
I left the car first and headed straight to the building without waiting for Lucien, and just when I was about to take the stairs to my room, Lucien called my attention as he walked inside the living room.
"Scarlet... let's talk."
I paused and gritted my teeth, taking a deep breath as I resisted the urge to throw insults at him because I so felt like it. I put on a smile before turning to face him.
"Scarlet..." he paused, then came and stand in front of me, and as our eyes locked, the only thing I felt deep inside was rage. Recalling everything that happened back made me want to yell my lungs out, but I composed myself, acting like nothing happened. What was the point of confronting him when I already made my decision and made up my mind to stand by it?
"About yesterday... Uhm... I'm sorry. I didn't mean to treat you like that." I felt a sting in my heart as he looked straight into my eyes and lied to me confidently. I was convinced that Lucien knew what he was doing. Everything he did was intentional. He thinks I'm cheap because he has access to me anytime he wants it.
I stared at him without saying a word. I had nothing to say to him, and even if I did, it wasn't worth it after all.
I smiled at him as I nodded. "It's fine. I'm not mad at you."
"Don't say that, Scarlet..." he said in a muffled breath, closing the distance between us. He held my hands and gave them a light squeeze before lifting his gaze to my eyes. "I'm really sorry about what happened." He apologised again, as if I would be so foolish to listen to him.
"I shouldn't have treated you that way, and I regret everything." Unlike every other time that I would've melted away already, today was different. Not after all that happened.
'I told you, Lucien. That I'm never going to take any disrespect from you any longer. I promised you that I would walk out of your life forever if you ever did it. You thought I was joking?'
I wanted to remind him, but I sucked it in and just stared at him blankly as if I didn't understand the language he spoke to me.
"Scarlet..." frustration was evident in his voice and face.
"I need to rest, Lucien. I'm tired." I turned my face away from him after retracting my hands from his grasp.
"I'll be in my room." I told him then turned on my heel and ascended the staircase, heading to my room.
I threw myself on the bed the moment I walked inside my room, running my fingers through my hair as tears brimmed in my eyes.
My heart ached even though I didn't want it to. It hurts.
"It's not worth it, Scarlet. Don't think about it." I whispered to myself, wiping my tears.
My phone lit up with a text from Alexa, and I hesitantly checked it.
'Hey, darling. My parents are back and are requesting for my boyfriend to come over this weekend, meaning tomorrow or the day after. What do you think I should do? I'm going to lose my mind. I don't want to be match-made with one ugly old dude, babes'.
I could tell from her text how frustrated she was, and I really wished I could help her, but I was also down at the moment.
I tossed my phone on the bed, ignoring her text. I wasn't in the mood for that now.
With the little strength left in me, I dragged myself to my feet and stripped out of my dress before heading into the bathroom to shower.
When I walked back into my room minutes later, I saw my phone screen light on with a text popping up, so I reached for it.
'Work calls. Let's have dinner together tonight'
I huffed when I saw the ridiculous text from Lucien. Seriously?
I sat on the bed, my fingers tightened around my phone as my mind wandered off to last night. The kind of people Lucien met with. If my eyes weren't playing tricks on me, I think saw the governor there. Yes! The governor of the state. And the way they interacted, although I only got to see them briefly, they looked acquainted. It wasn't just the governor but also other dignitaries even though I couldn't recognise the others.
Now, the question is, what kind of business do they do together?
I shot to my feet as something crossed my mind. First, I went to check the parking lot through the window to be sure Lucien had really gone out. Relief coursed through me when I saw that his car wasn't there. Without wasting another second, I dashed out of the room and headed to his room. I had no idea what I was going there for, but something kept telling me that I would be able to find something.
However, I was disappointed when I was met with his locked door.
"What is his passcode?" I muttered, and after a few trials, I was forced to stop. I didn't want it to break. Lucien would definitely suspect me if that should happen.
I went back to my room hopelessly, lying on the bed hoping to get some sleep, but unfortunately, there was no trace of sleep in my eyes, so I gave up.
Just when I was going to be bored to death, my phone started to ring. It was Derek calling.
"Hey!" I picked on the first ring. Normally, I would ignore his call, but I didn't feel like it today.
"Hey!" His voice sounded from the other end.
"I was wondering if we could have lunch together."
