Chapter 82 Your Wife Is With Someone Else
Chapter 82 Your Wife Is With Someone Else
After everything that happened, Elisa finally slept in.
On her nightstand, her phone showed a message from Louis sent at 2 AM:
"Emergency at the company, had to fly out. Rolf is downstairs. Take him with you when you go out."
Elisa glanced at the sunlight outside, changed into a beige knit sweater and jeans, grabbed her canvas bag, and headed out.
When the elevator reached the basement level, Rolf was indeed waiting by the car.
"Ms. Roberts, where to today?"
"Just going out for a bit. You don't need to come with me."
Rolf looked troubled and was about to mention Louis's instructions when Elisa cut him off.
"I want to walk around alone. I'll explain to Louis." Elisa didn't like the feeling of having her freedom restricted, though she knew Louis meant well.
Rolf hesitated for three seconds before finally giving in.
After leaving, she hailed a cab to a newly opened supermarket nearby.
The mall was bustling with people.
Shopping alone felt rare and strangely liberating. Elisa was in a good mood.
Just as she was about to enter the mall, a familiar, annoying voice came from her right.
"Elisa!"
It was Leon.
He was still wearing that yellowed old jacket. The plaster cast on his right hand was mostly gone, leaving only a few grimy loops of gauze around his wrist.
How did he know she'd be here?
Elisa didn't hesitate and turned to leave.
"Stop!" Leon rushed up in a few steps and clamped his left hand around her arm, yanking so hard he nearly pulled her to the ground.
"Where do you think you're going?"
"Let go." Elisa's voice was tight.
"Give me money, and I'll let go."
Leon's tone was even more aggressive than last time, his eyes bloodshot; clearly, he'd lost big gambling. "Eight hundred thousand dollars. Your man broke my hand last time, so six hundred thousand for pain and suffering, plus two hundred thousand for medical expenses. If you don't pay, I'll make a scene right here and let everyone know what an ungrateful person you are!"
The restaurant row was crowded, and people were already slowing down and lifting their phones.
Elisa's back hit the wall as she tried to stay calm.
"Leon, you have no right to demand money from me."
"Whether I've got the right isn't up to you."
Leon tightened his grip, and her skin reddened visibly.
Elisa winced, trying to shake him off, but his hand was too strong to pry loose.
"Are you paying or not?"
Elisa clenched her teeth and jerked hard.
Leon lifted his left hand to slap her. Elisa seized the opening and bit down hard on the back of his hand.
"Ah!"
Leon cried out and instinctively let go.
Because he released her so suddenly, Elisa lost her balance. The momentum sent her down hard. Her palms scraped against the ground, and the metallic taste of blood spread in her mouth.
At least twenty onlookers surrounded them, but not one stepped forward.
More phones came up anyway.
"Bitch, I'm going to kill you today!"
Leon, pushed to his limit, reached out to grab Elisa.
Just then, a figure in black cut through the crowd from the outside and drove a kick into Leon's ribs.
Leon flew sideways, crashing into a metal trash can by the curb. Man and can tumbled together twice before he hit the ground and stayed there, unable to get up for a long time.
The crowd jolted and backed away.
Stephen didn't stop. He strode forward, grabbed Leon by the collar, half-hauled him up, and slammed his right fist into Leon's cheekbone. Then he whipped a heavy backhand straight into Leon's mouth.
"He's beating someone! Help!" Leon's face was covered in blood. He begged through it, words falling apart, trying to shrink into himself.
Stephen kicked him hard once more without mercy before stopping.
He turned and walked back to Elisa, his voice calm but his eyes full of barely contained concern.
"Are you okay?"
"I'm fine."
With Stephen's help, Elisa got up from the ground.
"What do you want to do now?"
"Leon, listen carefully." Elisa looked past Stephen at the pathetic man on the ground and spoke seriously. "This is the last time. If there's a next time, I'm calling the police. Extortion and blackmail, that's more than enough reasons to put you in jail for three years."
Leon's mouth opened and closed. Seeing Stephen's terrifying expression, he didn't dare say anything more. He scrambled up, covered his face, and stumbled away into an alley.
The crowd gradually dispersed, and phones went away.
Stephen noticed the injury on Elisa's hand. "Your hand needs treatment."
"No need, I'll just put some medicine on it when I get back."
"Okay."
Stephen didn't say more and went along with Elisa's wishes.
Meanwhile, in the penthouse suite at a York Group hotel.
Louis had just finished a video conference and found two text messages from an unfamiliar number on his phone.
"Mr. York, I'm Elisa's uncle Leon."
"I know a lot about her. Want to hear? Pay me."
Louis's brow furrowed slightly.
"How much do you want?"
"A hundred thousand dollars."
The response came quickly, as if victory was certain.
Louis didn't hesitate.
He transferred a hundred thousand dollars immediately.
A few seconds later, Leon's message popped up.
"Got it, Mr. York, you're really generous!"
"So I'll be straight with you. I passed by the shopping district and saw Elisa with a man, and the way they were so close..."
"How about that? Pretty juicy news, right? A hundred thousand was way too cheap!"
Louis's fingers, which had been idly turning a pen, suddenly stopped.
Leon might not know who the man was, but Louis didn't need to guess. The man Leon meant was Stephen.
On the other end, Leon looked at the transfer record on his phone and licked his lips greedily.
His fingers flew over the keyboard as he typed another message.
"Give me another five hundred thousand! I'll not only spill everything about her, but I can also keep tabs on this cheating couple for you!"
As soon as he hit send, the message failed to deliver.
Leon's eyes widened as he realized Louis had blocked him.
"Damn it! Why are all rich people so stingy now?"
