Chapter 72 Misfortunes Never Come Singly
Chapter 72 Misfortunes Never Come Singly
The visitor's name was Evan Roberts. He was an illegitimate son of the Roberts family, Jason’s uncle by name alone.
Curtis had kicked him out of the Roberts family since he was young. He'd clawed his way up through sheer fists and a reckless, ruthless drive, now leading a gang of desperados who did dirty work across borders. His personality was twisted and vicious.
Back then, he was the one who met Mandy first, the one who fell for her first. But Curtis, wielding the power and wealth of being the Roberts family head, had stolen Mandy away and married her.
Evan had swallowed this bitter pill of having his love stolen for twenty years.
His willingness to take on Mandy's dirty work this time had nothing to do with any old feelings—it was finally his chance to get revenge on the Roberts family—
to get revenge on Mandy.
"Are you crazy?" Mandy lowered her voice and rushed up to confront him.
"I gave you money to find someone to scare Elisa in Emberfall City, to take a few photos that would ruin her reputation. Why did you have to kill someone!"
Evan spat out his cigarette and let out a cold laugh.
"You think I like making things messy?"
"Mandy, that precious stepdaughter of yours is no pushover. She's not only got Louis's people around her, but there are experts hiding nearby, too. The guy I sent couldn't even get close to her before his wrist got broken and he was thrown into the police station."
Evan stepped closer to Mandy, his sinister gaze sticking to her like a venomous snake.
"That guy's pretty timid. If he spills everything to the cops and they trace it back to me, do you think I'd survive?"
"If I don't kill him, I'm the one who dies. And if I die, Mandy, do you think you can get away?"
Mandy stepped back, her back hitting the cold wall.
"How much money do you want? Give me back the transaction records. Take the money and get out of the country immediately!"
"Money? Of course, I want money." Evan held up two fingers. "Twenty million US dollars. Cash, untraceable."
Mandy panicked.
"Twenty million dollars? Are you robbing me? Where am I supposed to get that much cash!"
The Roberts Family’s funds had already dried up, and Jason had the finances locked down tight. There was no way she could pull out that much money.
"Can't come up with it?"
Evan suddenly reached out and ripped off Mandy's mask and baseball cap.
Mandy's well-maintained face was exposed in the dim light. Though she was in her forties, years of comfortable living had kept her skin good and her figure full—she still had her charm.
Evan's gaze roamed over her body brazenly, his eyes turning murky and lewd, with a kind of madness that had been suppressed for years.
"If you can't come up with money, then pay with something else."
He suddenly reached out, grabbed Mandy's chin, and forcibly pressed her against the wall.
"What are you doing! Let go of me!" Mandy screamed and struggled, her hands desperately pounding his shoulders.
"Evan, are you crazy? I'm your sister-in-law... You bastard!"
Evan wasn't moved at all. He backhanded her with a vicious slap across the face.
A sharp crack. Mandy's head snapped to the side, blood seeping from the corner of her mouth, her ears ringing.
"Stop pretending!" Evan leaned close to her ear, his breath reeking of cigarettes, his voice full of twisted hatred.
"If that bastard hadn't abused his power back then, you should have been my woman from the start!"
"You just love the Roberts family's money, don't you? Curtis is in prison now, the Roberts Family is nothing but a hollow shell—what's the point of staying faithful to him?"
"If you dare scream today, I'll send the transaction records to Louis right away! Then you'll be begging me and won't even get the chance! Or... do you want your precious daughter to become a complete joke, let everyone know her mother hired a hitman?"
Mandy's body went rigid, her struggling hands dropping limply.
Evan smiled. A triumphant, malicious smile.
He ripped open Mandy's athletic jacket and forcefully pushed her down onto a worn-out sofa cushion nearby.
The basement echoed with sickening sounds of fabric tearing.
An hour later.
Mandy emerged from the abandoned auto parts city with her clothes torn. Her whole body was shaking, her neck and thighs covered with purple bruises from his rough handling.
It was pouring rain outside. The rain drenched her hair as she stumbled to pull open the door of that old car and climbed in.
Inside the car was dark.
Mandy collapsed over the steering wheel, letting out deeply suppressed sobs. The crying quickly turned into a bone-chilling, bitter laugh.
Overwhelming hatred churned in her chest.
"Elisa... it's all because of you..." Mandy's eyes were full of venom. "Even if I die, I'm dragging you down with me..."
With trembling hands, she turned the car key.
The engine roared, and Mandy slammed on the gas. The car rushed into the rainy night.
The rain got heavier and heavier, the wipers unable to keep up with clearing the water streaming down the windshield.
Mandy's mind was in a complete daze, her head filled with humiliating scenes from the basement moments ago, and Evan's crazy, disgusting laughter.
The car entered an intersection.
Just as she crossed the stop line, from the blind spot on the right, a piercing screech of emergency braking and frantic honking suddenly tore through the rainy night.
Mandy turned her head sluggishly.
Two blinding high beams robbed her of her last bit of vision. And at the center of that blinding halo, a truck wrapped in suffocating wind and spray was barreling toward the driver’s side.
A dull collision sound tore through the rainy night.
At the critical moment, screeching brake sounds rang out across the intersection. The truck driver hit the brakes and yanked the steering wheel hard, and the massive truck's front just barely scraped past the front of Mandy's old car!
Though it avoided a fatal head-on collision, the huge lateral impact still sent the sedan flying violently.
The car spun out of control several times on the slick asphalt, finally smashing through the guardrail with half the car's body plunging into the landscaping.
The airbag deployed, slamming hard into Mandy's face.
She only felt a sharp ringing in her ears, then her vision went black, and she completely lost consciousness. Cold rainwater poured through the shattered car window into the cabin, washing over the blood seeping from her temple.
After an unknown amount of time, red and blue flashing lights pierced the wall of rain, and urgent ambulance sirens approached from far away.
Several emergency personnel rushed over through the puddles, struggled to pry open the deformed car door, lifted the unconscious Mandy onto a stretcher, and rushed her to the hospital through the pouring rain.
