Chapter 135 Leaving with Nothing
"You don't have to take it so hard," Isabella said, feeling a bit unworthy.
Gregory wanted Isabella to accept his gratitude and continued, "A while ago, you asked me about the woman who jumped off the building. I didn't want to talk about it at first. It was a long time ago, and I really don't remember much. And I didn't want to get myself into trouble."
Isabella nodded, showing she understood.
Gregory went on, "But you helped our family. If you want to know anything, go ahead. I can tell you everything I remember."
Isabella got straight to the point. "Back then, before my mom fell, was she alone on the rooftop?"
Gregory's mind drifted back to that rainy night twelve years ago. "That day, your mom was the first to arrive. She was standing alone in the rain, like she was deep in thought. I was patrolling and tried to get her to come inside, but she ignored me. Later, I left. An hour later, when I patrolled the rooftop again, I found two more people there."
Isabella's heart tightened. "What kind of people?"
"A man and a woman. The man was holding an umbrella and arguing with your mom in the rain, but he didn't seem to have any good points. Your mom quickly shut him down. The woman beside the man also argued with your mom. The rain was too heavy, and I couldn't hear what they were arguing about."
Isabella immediately thought of Lucas and Donna. "And then?" she asked.
"Then, I left again. When I came back to the rooftop, the man had already left. Your mom was still in the rain, arguing with the woman who was with the man."
Unable to hear what was said, it was unclear what happened at that moment. But one thing was certain: if the man and woman were Lucas and Donna, then the argument with Hazel was likely about their relationship.
"But I was always worried about your mom, so I didn't leave. As the rain gradually lessened, I vaguely heard the word 'divorce' in their argument."
Isabella thought, 'Divorce? Is it Lucas wanting to divorce Hazel, or Hazel wanting to divorce Lucas?'
She asked, "What else did you hear?"
"I heard your mom cursing at the woman, saying something about definitely getting a divorce but not giving them any money. I couldn't quite understand what she was saying. Your mom was very agitated."
Isabella understood. Hazel had proposed the divorce but wanted Lucas to leave with nothing, and Donna was unwilling, so she confronted Hazel, leading to the argument on the rooftop.
Gregory closed his eyes, as if many forgotten memories were slowly resurfacing. "The woman kept pushing your mom. They were shoving each other towards the edge of the rooftop. At that time, there were no billboards on the rooftop, making it look particularly dangerous in the rainy night. Later, the woman, in a fit of rage, gave your mom a heavy push. Your mom lost her balance, swayed a couple of times, and then fell."
Gregory suddenly opened his slightly cloudy eyes. "That's right, your mom was pushed down like that. She was so young. I heard her scream, but I couldn't save her."
"I'm a coward. I ran back to the duty room. Later, the police and ambulance arrived, and everyone was busy. I heard that the fall was later ruled as a suicide."
Gregory looked at Isabella with guilt. "I'm really sorry."
Isabella gently shook her head. She didn't blame this bystander. Even if he had tried to save her, he could do nothing. The incident happened so quickly and suddenly; he couldn't have saved Hazel.
Isabella said, "Gregory, you don't have to apologize. I won't blame you."
"But if at that time I..." Gregory regretted that such a good woman lost her life.
Isabella took out her phone and handed it to Gregory. It was a photo of Donna. "Gregory, look at this person. Do you recognize her?"
Gregory recognized her immediately. "It's her. She's the one who argued with your mom. It's definitely her."
Isabella took back the photo, gripping it tightly. It was indeed Donna. So her suspicions were all confirmed.
Isabella looked sincerely at Gregory. "Gregory, if we need you to testify, can you do it?"
Gregory didn't hesitate and nodded. "Yes."
Donna caused Hazel's death. Isabella leaned towards intentional murder and she would definitely settle this score.
Gregory escorted Isabella downstairs. Donna, who had been waiting in the car, saw the two of them, especially Gregory. He looked so familiar. Donna stared at his face, shivering suddenly.
That day, she had a fierce argument with Hazel on the rooftop. Hazel's arrogance and disdain deeply hurt her pride. At that moment, she had only one thought: to make Hazel die.
And that was the outcome. Hazel fell, plummeting from the building to a horrible death.
She was scared and wanted to leave the scene. In her panic, she bumped into someone at the rooftop entrance. Their eyes met, and she imprinted his face in her mind.
She remembered warning him harshly not to speak out. The security guard kept nodding, and seeing how timid he was, she didn't take him seriously. But now, Isabella had found this security guard. Donna guessed she likely already knew the truth about Hazel's death.
Isabella really wouldn't let it go. Donna's lips curled into a sinister smile, and she pounded the steering wheel hard.
After returning to The Spencer Manor, Isabella stayed in her room for a long time. The truth had surfaced. Her next step was to request a retrial of the case from back then. The procedural matters could be handled by the lawyer.
She slowly closed her eyes and started to imagine what had happened. Hazel was pushed off without any defense. During the fall, she must have been terrified, helpless, and scared. What she couldn't let go of the most was probably her and Oliver.
Hazel must have been unwilling. She must have regretted not dragging Donna down with her.
Isabella's breathing became heavy, like a drowning child. She couldn't imagine how desperate Hazel was during those four and a half seconds.
Tears slowly overflowed from the corners of her eyes, sliding down her cheeks and falling onto the smooth marble floor.
