Chapter 190
Chapter 190
Watching Gabriel's retreating figure, my emotions were all over the place.
He was the father of my child. And right now, he was leaving me to go take care of another woman.
After I managed to calm down, I asked a hospital staff member for help finding a caregiver to look after me for the next few days. Then I called my company and requested time off.
Once I'd handled everything, I closed my eyes, exhausted.
I'd just think of it as a little vacation. That's what I told myself anyway.
I couldn't sleep. I grabbed my phone from under the pillow and scrolled aimlessly through Facebook.
Social media never failed to deliver fresh drama.
I saw that Azure had posted an update: [The feeling of being taken care of ❤️]
The photo showed Gabriel's back.
The image was like a knife twisting in my chest. I let out a bitter laugh. Years of marriage, and I still couldn't compete with some girl he'd known for a few months.
It reminded me of my past life. When I died, Gabriel and Azure had been at their happiest. Azure had just gotten pregnant with Gabriel's child, and that pregnancy had earned her acceptance from the Sinclair family.
---
I tried to keep things quiet, but I was working at Uncle Danny's company. Taking this much time off was bound to raise questions.
Uncle Danny and his family came to visit. I brushed it off, saying I'd been tired lately and wanted to rest and recover at the hospital.
Uncle Danny's face darkened. "You were so lively and full of energy as a kid. Ever since you married that man, you've been sickly. Good thing you divorced him."
Aunt Cathy tugged gently at Uncle Danny's sleeve from behind, quietly reminding him, "She's in the hospital right now. Why are you bringing up all this stuff?"
Uncle Danny finally shut up.
Looking at my family showing so much care and concern, I realized just how stupid I'd been in my past life.
I'd had so many people who loved me, who cared about me. And yet I'd insisted on throwing my life away for Gabriel.
I sipped the soup Aunt Cathy had brought in small mouthfuls. It was warm and comforting, and somehow it made my whole stomach feel better.
"I heard about what happened at the company," Uncle Danny said suddenly, bringing up work.
"Azure, right? I'll call HR right now and have her fired."
Uncle Danny was the most protective elder in the family, especially when it came to me.
My eyes stung slightly. "Uncle Danny, she already submitted her resignation to HR."
Azure didn't actually need to work. I knew that. She was just putting on an act, playing the struggling student to gain Gabriel's sympathy.
---
My family left around evening.
Suddenly, I heard footsteps outside my hospital room door. The next second, the door opened. Gabriel's cold face appeared in the doorway.
Seeing him show up out of nowhere, I frowned. "What are you doing here?"
"I shouldn't be here?"
"Then who do you think should be?"
Gabriel shot back. Even with me sick in the hospital, he still wouldn't cut me any slack.
"I can manage on my own. I don't need anyone taking care of me. You should go back and look after your little girlfriend."
I lifted my head, stubbornly meeting Gabriel's eyes.
"Ember, you've changed," Gabriel said coldly.
I had changed. I didn't love him anymore. And I didn't want to put up with his crap anymore either.
"Why did you sabotage Azure? Why did you deliberately tell everyone at the company retreat that Azure was the other woman who came between us?"
Gabriel stared at me seriously, like if I didn't give him a satisfactory answer, he wouldn't let it go.
"Isn't that the truth?" I stared back at him coldly.
"You know what? You're right. I am a manipulative woman. Is that what you want to hear?" I glared at Gabriel through gritted teeth.
He was silent for a long moment before changing the subject. "How long did the doctor say you need to stay?"
"Probably a while," I said vaguely.
Then I added, "I need to get my body back in shape so I can start a new life. Find someone new."
"Sounds like you already have someone in mind."
Hearing that, Gabriel's frown deepened.
"Is it really that hard to find a man to marry?" I countered.
"With your looks? Of course not."
"Exactly."
I looked at Gabriel with a slight smile, my tone teasing. "But Mr. Sinclair, why do you care so much? Now that you've got a new girlfriend, don't tell me you've fallen back in love with me?"
When Gabriel stayed silent, I added with a laugh, "People say you don't know what you have until it's gone. Guess that saying's true. So since you've already lost me, don't lose Azure too. I wish you both the best."
After saying that, I didn't bother with Gabriel anymore. I turned over so my back was facing him.
The person behind me clearly understood what I meant. He didn't push it. "If you're set on this divorce, then I'll respect your decision."
I thought Gabriel was being ridiculous. We were already divorced. What did he mean "if I was set on divorcing"?
I didn't respond. I just kept my eyes closed quietly.
---
Three days later, news of Gabriel Sinclair's marriage breakdown hit the entertainment headlines.
I scrolled through the media accounts and their various speculations, a slight smile on my lips. They were all wrong. I'd simply helped Gabriel make the choice he should have made himself.
The comments were going wild.
[Wait, what? How did this happen so suddenly?]
[Maybe she put up with it for years and finally had enough.]
[Is this because of that college girl?]
[She's so young but apparently pretty damn good at homewrecking.]
[I feel so bad for Mrs. Sinclair!]
Most of the comments were tearing into Azure.
Looks like Azure was about to go viral again. Perfect timing to boost her streaming career.
After scrolling for a bit, my head started to hurt. I tossed my phone aside and closed my eyes to rest.
I hoped this would finally be the end of everything.
Just as I was thinking that, my phone rang. It was Gilly.
I was caught off guard. After hesitating, I answered.
No matter what reasons my in-laws had for treating me well before, the fact was that when it really mattered, they'd always taken my side.
"Hello... Mom."
I answered the call.
"Ember, I heard you're in the hospital. What happened?"
"My body's just a bit run down. I'll be fine after resting for a while," I said casually.
"I'm sorry, Mrs. Sinclair." I suddenly realized I probably didn't have the right to call Gabriel's mother "Mom" anymore. I quickly corrected myself.
There was a moment of silence on the other end. When she finally spoke, her voice was a bit awkward. "Take care of yourself abroad. Don't get so thin. Make sure you eat properly."
"I will. You take care too," I replied politely.
