Chapter 33
Daisy was a bit taken aback; she hadn't expected such a plain-looking woman to speak so assertively.
Before she could respond, Sophia continued, "Ms. Lynn, didn't you just say that no matter how unattractive someone is, your makeup skills can make them radiant? But if you made yourself look like this, does that mean your looks are exceptionally bad?"
Daisy was surprised by Sophia's bluntness. She had some reservations about James being around such a plain-looking woman, but she had only hinted at her displeasure indirectly.
She felt a lump in her throat. This Sophia was not only unattractive but also a fool, which infuriated her.
She pretended to stay calm. "Ms. Brown, I'm just a makeup artist, not a big star. Obviously, I'm not good-looking. But you're different; you're with Mr. Smith."
"Especially today, you're accompanying Mr. Smith to the banquet, representing his image. Naturally, I need to make you look radiant."
Sophia looked at her disdainfully.
"Really? So you're saying that today, out of respect for Mr. Smith, you'll make me look beautiful and won't hold a grudge? Ms. Lynn, is this your way of showing generosity?"
"Should I thank you for not giving up on me, for saving my chance to present myself well in front of Mr. Smith?" Sophia said sarcastically.
Daisy pretended not to understand her awkward words.
"Ms. Brown, there's no need to be so polite. You don't have to thank me. After all, I would never let Mr. Smith lose face in front of others."
Sophia sneered. "What arrogance! So Mr. Smith's reputation in the business world all these years is thanks to you? Is that what you're saying?"
Daisy's face turned pale. She hadn't said that. How could Sophia randomly accuse her?
Besides, who was James? How could his reputation possibly be given by her?
To avoid a complete fallout with Sophia, Daisy awkwardly smiled and said, "Ms. Brown, you're joking. That's not what I meant. We're here now. Let's get off and I'll do your makeup."
Although Sophia had some unpleasant exchanges with Daisy in the car, she wasn't worried at all. She knew Daisy wouldn't dare to mess with her makeup.
She wasn't worried about Daisy secretly making her look ugly. As Daisy had said before, today she represented James's image.
If her makeup went wrong, James would never let Daisy off the hook.
Sophia sat in front of the makeup mirror, closing her eyes, feeling the people bustling around her.
Especially Daisy, who was busy with her face. After a while, Daisy spoke calmly, "Ms. Brown, the makeup is done. You can change into your dress now. Based on your makeup, I've chosen a sequined gown for you. The color matches your eyeshadow perfectly."
Sophia was almost asleep. Hearing this, she slowly opened her eyes and was instantly amazed by her reflection.
She had never imagined she could look so stunning.
Growing up in the Mia household, which was poor, Sophia had struggled just to afford her education. Dressing up was a luxury she couldn't afford—both in time and money.
She always wore plain clothes and never bothered with makeup.
This was Sophia's first time getting professional makeup, and it was done by such a high-end team.
She had to admit she looked breathtaking, almost like a different person.
Initially, Sophia wanted to praise Daisy, but remembering Daisy's previous arrogant attitude, she decided against it.
Daisy had looked down on her; why should she try to get close?
An assistant handed Sophia the glittering gown and said, "Ms. Brown, the fitting room is over there."
Sophia glanced at the gown. It was indeed beautiful but too revealing.
It accentuated her figure too much. She doubted she could walk confidently in it.
Sophia looked at the other dresses on the rack, picked out a plain white long dress, and said to Daisy, "I don't like that one. I'll wear this."
"But Ms. Brown, trust my professional judgment. Only the glittering gown can highlight Mr. Smith's status. After all, you're with Mr. Smith, and we need to be thorough."
Sophia ignored Daisy, raised an eyebrow, and challenged, "Sorry, but the dress is on me, so I decide. Letting you do my makeup today is already giving you face, so don't test my patience."
Daisy hesitated. She wanted to argue, but reconsidered. Anyone who could be by James's side and be taken to a banquet must not be easily provoked, so she decided not to push further.
When Sophia emerged from the fitting room, the makeup room was empty except for James, who was elegantly sitting on the sofa in a suit.
Today, James looked exceptionally handsome, his deep eyes fixed on her, filled with profound emotions.
James had been calm, but seeing Sophia come out, his expression turned somewhat surprised, his gaze deepening.
Sophia felt uncomfortable under his stare, as if his gaze carried some power, making her feel hot all over. "Can you stop staring at me like that? Do I have flowers on my face?"
Sophia wondered if Daisy had overdone her makeup, making her look strange, which explained James's reaction.
James slowly stood up, walked over, and unabashedly scrutinized her.
"Daisy told me you chose your dress today. I must say, you have good taste. The plain dress suits you well."
Mentioning Daisy made Sophia angry. She could vent her frustration on James now.
"James, I have to say, the makeup team you hired is indeed high-end, so high-end that they look down on people."
Sophia didn't specify what happened, but with that sentence, James immediately sensed something was wrong.
It seemed Sophia had been wronged right under his nose.
