Chapter 192
Hearing this, Sophia froze for a moment.
"Mom, are you saying James arranged the surgery for next week?"
Mia nodded.
"Yes, Mr. Smith arranged it. Mr. Smith talked with the doctor about my recent physical condition, and the doctor said I'm ready for surgery now, so Mr. Smith scheduled it with the doctor."
As soon as Mia finished speaking, Sophia's heart stirred. She never expected James to be so thoughtful.
She had been so busy lately, and James had quietly taken such good care of Mia. Sophia was truly touched.
At first, Sophia thought James was cold and cruel, completely heartless, and always unreasonable. But now it seemed she owed James far too much.
She really hadn't expected James to secretly do so much for her.
Seeing Sophia's serious expression, Mia quickly asked, "What's wrong, Sophia? Haven't you been feeling well lately? If you're not feeling well, you don't need to keep coming to the hospital. You just need to come sign the papers when I have surgery."
"There are other nurses here at the hospital, and they've been taking good care of me."
Sophia nodded firmly.
"I know, Mom. I'm not tired. I'm just touched. I didn't expect James to do so much for me while I wasn't around."
Hearing this, Mia also felt quite moved.
"Yes, James may seem cold on the surface, but who would have thought he'd be such a thoughtful person. Sophia, meeting a man like this in your lifetime really puts my heart at ease."
As someone who had been through it all, Mia knew best how important it was for a woman to marry a good man.
After Mia said this, Sophia felt uneasy inside. There were some things she didn't know how to explain to Mia.
If she told Mia now about her marriage to James, she was afraid that when she and James separated later, Mia would be heartbroken.
After all, Mia's biggest worry now was her. If she could really find a stable man to marry, Mia could finally stop worrying.
But her marriage to James was a transaction. She had never really given Mia any peace of mind.
"Sophia, looking at you like this, so restless, there must be something else going on. Whatever happens to you, don't hide it from your mother. You're my only family now, you must take good care of yourself."
Hearing this, Sophia felt especially sad.
"Mom, there's actually something I want to tell you."
Mia raised her eyebrows, feeling puzzled.
"What is it? Sophia, what happened?"
Sophia pressed her lips together lightly.
"Mom, actually James and I have already gotten our marriage certificate. We're married."
Hearing this, Mia was thrilled. She had been worried before that if she went into surgery and something unexpected happened and she didn't make it, what would happen? Now hearing this news, she was overjoyed.
"That's wonderful! You and Mr. Smith really got your marriage certificate?"
Mia could hardly believe it.
Sophia nodded firmly and was about to say something when Mia interrupted her.
"Sophia, this puts my mind at ease. Even if something happens to me in the future, you and Mr. Smith will have each other. Now I can truly relax."
Sophia paused. She had wanted to tell Mia about the contract marriage with James, but after hearing this, she hesitated and ultimately didn't say it.
She felt that Mia had finally stopped worrying about her. If she told her the truth, wouldn't she just start worrying again?
Sophia thought she'd wait until after Mia's surgery to find another opportunity to bring it up.
"I never thought my precious daughter would meet such a good man. This is your good fortune. Mom just hopes you and James will live well together."
Sophia's heart felt heavy. She didn't know if she could fulfill Mia's small wish.
After leaving the Smith Manor, Chase drove straight to the Brown Villa.
Veda was eagerly waiting for his triumphant return. When she saw Chase's car enter the Brown Villa gates, she rushed out of the house.
"Chase, how did it go? Did you and Grandpa work out a plan?"
Veda thought that since they were in the right, Aiden would definitely take their side.
After all, it was Sophia who inexplicably betrayed Chase first. How could a man of integrity like Aiden allow James to marry such a woman?
After parking the car, Chase got out looking dejected. He walked up to Veda.
"Veda, James and Sophia being together is already a done deal. There's no way to change it. So even though I mentioned that Sophia and I had an engagement, Grandpa didn't say much about it."
Hearing this, Veda was shocked.
"What did you say? Aiden wasn't moved? How is that possible?"
This was too shocking for Veda. How could this be? Didn't Aiden know that Sophia was originally engaged to Chase?
Chase looked troubled and took a couple steps forward before continuing, "And Veda, when I got there, Sophia publicly revealed our relationship. My grandpa actually thought it was perfect - Sophia with Uncle James, and me with you. He didn't see any conflict."
Already feeling upset, Veda became even angrier hearing Chase say this. What did he mean by perfect? Perfect for whom?
"Chase, what's wrong with you? When Aiden said that, you just agreed?"
Seeing how agitated Veda was, Chase felt confused.
"Veda, I think my grandpa is right. Even if Sophia hadn't gotten together with Uncle James, I wasn't planning to marry her anyway. I've been trying to figure out how to get rid of her. Now she left on her own - isn't that good?"
"Good? What's good about it?"
Veda was about to explode, but suddenly realized she couldn't let Chase hear what she was about to say. She couldn't very well tell Chase she wanted to be with James, could she?
Chase frowned slightly.
