Chapter 211
"You're going to donate your liver to me?"
Victoria looked at him in shock.
But he smiled, "Why not?"
"But we've only known each other for a short time. This isn't right." Victoria lowered her arms from her chest and placed her hands on her knees, her abnormally pale fingers curling involuntarily.
Aaron looked into her eyes and said seriously, "Even if we'd only known each other for one day, if you needed my help, I would help you. Ms. Gonzalez, I'm a police officer. Even though I'm not in that position anymore, I haven't changed."
Victoria knew Aaron was a well-loved police officer who always rushed to the front lines to rescue those who needed rescuing.
Like Tamsin, who was on the brink of death.
Like when she was kneeling in the blizzard, being reported on and surrounded by unscrupulous media—he came to rescue her too.
Later, when she was upset by the intimate photos Mia released, he was the one who answered her emergency call.
Every time, it was him. When she needed help most, he was like a warm ray of sunshine, shining on her.
But she never expected Aaron would actually offer to get tested for compatibility and be willing to donate his liver to her.
But what had she done to deserve this?
Victoria said nothing.
Aaron thought she was considering his proposal and didn't interrupt her thoughts.
She saw the car was almost at Martin's villa, just one bus stop away.
Victoria remembered Martin's warning from last time—if he saw her getting too close to Aaron again, he would not hesitate to go after Aaron.
How could someone as kind as Aaron get hurt?
Victoria told Aaron to just drop her off at the bus stop. He understood her concerns and didn't want to cause trouble for Victoria either. His intention was just to give her a ride since it was on his way.
He didn't want Martin to see them either.
So he had the driver pull over to the side of the road.
Victoria thanked him and was about to open the car door.
"Think carefully about my proposal, Ms. Gonzalez. Never give up on yourself, no matter what."
His words made her fingers freeze on the door handle.
Victoria looked up, turned her head toward him, and smiled. If possible, she hoped all she left Aaron with were beautiful smiles.
Even though behind that smile, everything had already rotted away.
"Mr. Hill, thank you for your kindness. I'm very grateful that you're willing to go this far for me. But I really don't need it anymore." Victoria smiled bitterly.
Aaron thought she was unwilling and was about to speak again.
She interrupted, "The doctor told me today that my body can't handle the risks of such a major surgery anymore. Even if I wanted the liver transplant, I'm beyond that now."
"Ms. Gonzalez—" Aaron hesitated, his eyes filled with complicated emotion.
Victoria smiled to comfort him, "Don't worry about me. It's not like I just found out today that I have terminal cancer. I've already accepted this reality. Officer Yan, I'm still used to calling you that. You still have plenty of time ahead of you, a bright life ahead. You shouldn't waste your time on someone at a dead end like me."
"Work hard, live your own life well. Even if I die tomorrow, I'll become a star in the sky, blessing you with peace and safety, a worry-free life, and many children and grandchildren."
"So stop worrying about my situation. It's not worth it. Thank you for driving me back today. Let's say goodbye forever."
Victoria had meant to say "see you again," but she didn't want to drag Aaron into this.
Let Martin torment her alone. She couldn't let it affect Aaron.
So she changed her words.
"I don't understand why Martin treats you this way?" Aaron finally asked the question that had been buried deep in his heart.
Victoria was dazed for a moment, hesitating whether to tell him.
Then she thought, they'd see each other less and less anyway, so it wouldn't hurt to tell him.
Victoria let out a breath and smiled bitterly, "Aaron, there's no absolute love in this world, and no absolute hate either. Martin's feelings toward me are like that too."
"What do you mean?" Aaron asked, confused.
Victoria smiled and asked him, "If your parents died indirectly because of your father-in-law, would you blame your wife?"
Aaron didn't answer. He didn't say he would, but he didn't say he wouldn't either.
Victoria said, "Martin hates me for exactly that reason. So I don't blame him. I'm the one who owes him."
"Your father's car accident—have you ever thought it might have been him?" Aaron asked again.
Victoria was momentarily stunned. Martin wanted to send Hayden to prison, but lacking evidence, he never made a move. He only sent the driver to prison.
Driver Sean really had committed a crime, which is why he went in.
With Martin's current position, pinning a charge on Hayden and getting him locked up would be incredibly easy.
The fact that he didn't do this proved his character wasn't bad.
The hit-and-run driver still hadn't been found.
She wanted to investigate, but now she had no way, no energy to continue.
Thinking of this, Victoria asked, "I believe it wasn't Martin. He's not that kind of person. But the hit-and-run driver who caused my dad's accident still hasn't been caught. Could you help me find someone to investigate?"
"I didn't want to trouble you, but I can barely help myself now."
Aaron nodded, "Leave it to me. I just can't guarantee I'll find out right away."
"That's fine. As long as justice is served, I'll be able to see it from heaven." After Victoria finished speaking, she thanked him again, then opened the car door.
A gust of cold wind blew in.
Scattering her hair.
To show her gratitude, she bowed to him three times.
Then closed the car door.
Not far away, a black Bentley was parked by the roadside. Through the tightly sealed car window, Martin stared intently at Victoria, who had just gotten out of Aaron's car.
He also saw her bow to Aaron just now.
No wonder she told him to leave—turned out she was meeting Aaron again.
She was even carrying his child.
Couldn't Victoria just behave herself?
And she bowed? The daughter of the Gonzalez family, acting so lowly?
Martin's face was dark with anger. Brian, observing his expression, wanted to speak up for Victoria, "Mr. Collins, Mrs. Collins is pregnant and can't be too tired. Should I drive over and have Mrs. Collins get in the car?"
"You like her? Why don't you take my place then?" Martin's cold gaze swept over like a knife.
Brian quickly denied it, "Mr. Collins, you're joking. I'm married—how could I dare have designs on Mrs. Collins?"
"Then why aren't you driving?"
Brian quickly drove away.
Victoria didn't notice Martin's car passing in front of her.
She walked back to the apartment. At the entrance, she changed into slippers. Feeling very uneasy, she deliberately glanced at the shoe cabinet. Martin's slippers were there, so he hadn't come back yet.
She let out a breath of relief.
Then she climbed the spiral staircase. She didn't know why, but with each step, her breathing grew heavier, as if something was about to happen.
But she didn't know what exactly would happen.
Her eyelid kept twitching.
She reached the top of the stairs.
Victoria saw all the lights in the living room were on, bright as day.
Martin had removed his suit jacket and wore only a white shirt. Perhaps because the central air conditioning was at a comfortable temperature, he'd rolled his sleeves up to his elbows, revealing the straight, attractive lines of his muscles.
The shirt hem was perfectly tucked into his black dress pants.
He hadn't even changed out of his leather shoes.
His eyes were fixed on her like torches, as if lying in wait, catching her like a student who'd done something wrong.
