Chapter 307 Shura Battlefield
Chapter 307 Shura Battlefield
Everard's voice still carried amusement, but the temperature around him dropped.
Everyone knew the FitzRoy family had been purged twenty years ago. The second branch had only him left.
It sounded nice—the FitzRoy family's only child, future heir.
But given how brutal that purge had been, the first branch was most likely responsible.
Now the FitzRoy Group was in Isaiah's hands. Where would there be room for Everard?
Elowen realized her mistake, bit her lip hard, and shot Sophia another dark glare.
She felt like whenever Sophia was around, she inexplicably made mistakes she shouldn't.
"Everard, I didn't mean it that way..."
"It's fine."
Everard waved dismissively, cutting her off. He stepped forward and slung an arm around Lancelot's neck. "We all grew up together. Why get hung up on details? Today's my welcome-back party. At least stay for dinner."
The two heavyweights returned to the private room. The others exchanged glances and naturally followed.
Elowen immediately moved to Sophia's side. "Don't think you can kick me out of the Clifford Group! Mr. and Mrs. Clifford would never allow it. They'd never approve of a divorced woman like you!"
The truth always cut deep.
After all, when Phaedra had called her before, it wasn't out of admiration.
She'd wanted to use Lancelot's blind dates to make Sophia back off.
But so what?
Sophia's lips curved in a gentle, lovely smile. Her words sounded mild but carried barbs.
"If Ms. Seymour is so confident of victory, why do you always look so anxious?"
"Is it because Mr. Clifford has never said he'd marry you—hasn't even given you girlfriend status?"
"When it comes to hitting sore spots and making people uncomfortable, who can't do that?"
Working with a sharp-tongued boss, even licking her lips now, Sophia worried she'd poison herself!
Elowen's expression changed dramatically. Sophia had already walked past her, sitting back down beside Lancelot as if nothing had happened.
They were all players. Since Lancelot and Everard weren't bringing up what just happened, everyone naturally resumed pleasant conversation.
Finnian even raised a glass to Everard. "Mr. FitzRoy is a young talent with limitless potential. It would be our honor to cooperate with you."
William raised his glass too, but anyone with eyes could see him constantly glancing at Sophia.
Still fuming inside, Elowen naturally wouldn't let this slide.
"Everyone says Mr. Howard and Ms. Percy are divorced, but seeing how lovingly Mr. Howard looks at her, there must be more to the story, right? Why not share? We could help mediate."
Finnian's heart jumped.
Elowen liked Lancelot. Lancelot and Sophia had something ambiguous going on. William couldn't let go of Sophia.
With these people stirring things up, how could Finnian make a good impression on Everard today?
The key question—had Everard been protecting Elowen earlier or actually angry? Finnian wasn't sure and didn't know what to do.
While he hesitated, William spoke. "I made some mistakes before, so Sophia and I divorced. But she's been the only one in my heart from beginning to end. She's the only one I'll ever be with."
William's passionate declaration, paired with his handsome face and authoritative bearing, was quite impressive.
But how she'd escaped from William's side and nearly lost her life—Sophia knew better than anyone.
Her exquisite face showed no emotion. The disgust in her eyes wasn't hidden at all.
Lancelot, never one to miss stirring the pot, placed carefully deboned fish on Sophia's plate.
"Eat carefully. Don't let the bones get stuck."
He didn't forget to glance at William. "If Mr. Howard doesn't know how to cherish someone, naturally someone else will."
Who would cherish her was obvious.
"Lancelot!" William's temper flared. "She's my woman!"
"Did you choose not to hear what Ms. Percy just said?"
Compared to his rage, Lancelot's expression remained unchanged except for a slight arch of his eyebrow.
"She has no feelings left for you, her ex-husband. She's looking forward to a future partner."
Sophia fell silent.
When had she looked forward to that?
Why was this suddenly directed at her?
He'd promised to bring her to watch the drama. Turned out she was the drama?
At a loss but unable to openly contradict Lancelot, Sophia could only shoot him a covert glare.
Resentful and aggrieved.
Watching her pitiful appearance, the amusement in Lancelot's eyes deepened. He piled more food on her plate. "Eat more."
Sophia was speechless.
He really didn't care if she lived or died.
Feeling multiple gazes landing on her, she grew irritated too.
Why always worry about what others thought?
Right then, Sophia channeled her frustration into appetite!
She had to admit, Lancelot knew her tastes well. All her favorites. The more she ate, the better it tasted.
So good she couldn't stop!
The resentful stares across from her couldn't stop either.
Especially Elowen's. Her goal had been to use William to make Lancelot resent Sophia, not watch them be lovey-dovey!
Elowen fake-smiled. "How long has Ms. Percy been divorced? Already looking for someone new so quickly? Unless you hadn't actually divorced yet..."
She trailed off, as if realizing she shouldn't say such things, her face showing apologetic expression.
"Ms. Percy, I speak too bluntly. Don't take offense. It's just that the timing is so short, people might get the wrong idea."
The wrong idea about what?
That she'd cheated?
Sophia disdained such tactics. They were all the same kind of people, all understood those twisted games. Stop pretending to be innocent in front of me.
She didn't even bother mentioning William's affair, directly turning her attack on Elowen.
"Has Ms. Seymour been married or divorced?"
Elowen snapped, "What are you talking about? I've never been married!"
Sophia replied, "Oh, you haven't? Then how do you understand 'our kind' so clearly? So during your relationships, Ms. Seymour has done such things?"
Elowen's face flushed red and pale in turns, too angry to retort.
Finnian truly had a headache now. Things had completely exceeded his expectations.
He tugged William's sleeve, voice low enough for only them. "We can't offend Mr. FitzRoy today. Find a way to take Sophia away."
Once she left, Lancelot would surely follow. Elowen wouldn't stay either.
With the troublemakers gone, the rest would be easier to discuss.
As for how they fared—he couldn't worry about that now.
William desperately wanted to take Sophia away, but where was the opportunity?
While he pondered, Finnian spoke up. "William, the past is past. Whatever relationship you and Ms. Percy had before, it's time to look forward. Toast Ms. Percy—let's wipe the slate clean."
William thought of something and actually walked over with a drink. "Sophia..."
"Don't you know that at Ascend Global Group, I drank so much for business deals that I ruined my stomach and developed an alcohol allergy?"
