Chapter 186
Haven had taken off the hospital gown and sat on the bed in her jacket, feeling anxious. Suddenly, hearing someone knock on the door, her heart skipped a beat.
"It's me. Open up."
Hearing the familiar voice, Haven hurried to open the door, cautiously peeking out into the corridor. After confirming there were no pursuers outside, she pulled Josephine inside.
"Are you alright? I saw those reporters chasing after you and I got so scared."
"I'm fine, don't worry." Josephine took off the hospital gown. She'd originally wanted to put it back on Haven, but remembering Cedric's arrangements, she placed it on the bed instead. "Listen, this place isn't safe anymore. You can't stay here. I'll arrange another hospital for you..."
Haven listened carefully. "I don't need to stay in the hospital. Actually, I'm fine now. I can go home. If you don't want me appearing recently, I can just stay indoors."
She was very cooperative.
Josephine nodded, looking relieved. "This is for your own good. If you show your face now, you'll just be hounded by those reporters. you wouldn't be able to handle them. As for the company... Mr. Getty just promised me he won't make you appear in public."
"Thank you, Ms. Kennedy."
Haven knew she didn't have that much clout herself. The only one who could get Cedric to agree to such a request was Josephine.
After seeing Haven off, a nurse came to find Josephine and took her to the room that had been arranged.
Cedric wasn't there. Josephine didn't ask about it.
She thought seriously about the press conference and silently made a decision in her heart.
There were still two days until the press conference began.
During those two days, Josephine didn't appear, Cedric didn't appear either, and Emma, Kenneth, and Aiden all kept their mouths shut. Employees tried to probe for information but learned nothing.
These two days left everyone at the company on edge. Reporters camped outside the company entrance, trying to get the latest news, but couldn't find out anything.
The day before the press conference, all tensions rose.
First was Gideon. He came to the Getty Group wanting to see Cedric and Josephine. Of course, he had no luck. After sitting in the lounge for nearly two hours, he still hadn't spotted either of them.
Kenneth said gently, "It's not that we don't want Mr. Getty and Ms. Kennedy to see you—they're really not at the company."
"Are they planning to shirk responsibility?" Gideon's expression was ice-cold. "This project is a collaboration between the Getty Group and Starlight Group. If they can't give me a satisfactory result... I'll have no choice but to go to Grandfather."
Kenneth frowned slightly. "Rest assured, once Mr. Getty and Ms. Kennedy return to the company, I'll immediately inform them of this matter."
He politely saw Gideon out just like that.
But he didn't breathe easier. Although he'd never dealt with David, he'd heard of his reputation—a very difficult old man to handle.
He called Josephine.
After listening to him, Josephine frowned slightly. "Today's the last day. Hold on a bit longer. After tomorrow's press conference, everything will settle down."
"What are you planning to do?" Kenneth couldn't help asking. Actually, the best approach would be to let the culprit who caused the data error take the fall.
Whether through termination, fines, or even destroying Haven's future career—at least it would stabilize the company.
But Josephine refused to sacrifice her. Kenneth had racked his brains and couldn't think of a better solution.
"Kenneth, do you think this was Haven's fault?" Josephine suddenly asked this question.
Silence fell on the other end of the line. After a moment, Kenneth's voice came through. "There's no point in assigning blame now."
What good would determining fault do? The most important thing now was to quickly resolve the external public opinion and prevent greater impact and losses to the company.
"Gideon just said if you can't provide a perfect solution, he'll go to Mr. David Getty. That would be very unfavorable for you."
Josephine had already changed into a hospital gown and now stood before the floor-to-ceiling window. This was the best VIP room—rather than a hospital room, it was more like a vacation suite.
She opened the window. A breeze blew through, carrying autumn's coolness.
"Don't worry. I won't let anything happen to you all."
Was Haven wrong? Yes, she wasn't careful enough, was somewhat careless in her work, which led to the data error. Although that male colleague should have done the final check and didn't, both of them were actually at fault in this matter.
But they were human, not machines. Even machines malfunction and jam—how much more so people, who naturally make mistakes? If this incident hadn't been publicized, it wouldn't have been so troublesome.
But it had been leaked to reporters.
The Getty Group was a tall tree that caught the wind—countless eyes watched them from the shadows. This incident was merely a catalyst. The real trouble lay with those eyes behind the scenes.
They would never easily let the Getty Group off.
Therefore, this matter had to be perfectly resolved.
The Getty Manor.
At the dinner table that evening, Gideon, Briana, and Bentley were all present. David asked Gideon about company matters. Gideon answered fluently. David nodded with satisfaction.
Briana's eyes darted around. "Speaking of company matters, I'm quite worried too. Our Gid wholeheartedly wants to cooperate with the family company for mutual profit, but some people are holding him back."
Gideon frowned slightly. Without revealing anything, he speared a piece of fish for his mother. "Eat more."
How could Briana not understand her son was trying to shut her up? She glared at him.
Worthless thing!
David asked, "Who's holding things back?"
Briana, ignoring Gideon's attempts to stop her, immediately said, "Who else but Josephine! She's working at the Getty Group now. At first, I thought her getting into the company showed some ability—after all, Cedric isn't the type to let people use backdoor connections. Who knew that this time, when both companies were handling a project, the people underneath made such a huge mistake. Something about getting the data wrong. Now reporters all know and are questioning both companies' capabilities. If you ask me, this is Josephine's poor management. As department supervisor, she should bear primary responsibility!"
"Why wasn't I told about this?" David looked at Gideon.
Gideon pressed his lips together and replied, "Employees making mistakes isn't the first time. Cedric has always been strict with his subordinates. This might just be an accident. I've already spoken with Cedric. Tomorrow he's holding a press conference and will resolve this matter. Since there's already a solution, I didn't tell you—I didn't want you worrying about it."
David made a sound of acknowledgment. "You're brothers. Helping each other is proper."
"Grandfather is right."
After dinner, David returned to his room. Briana and Gideon walked in the courtyard. She was very indignant. "Why should it be this way? Cedric's side has problems, so you have to help? Father is just biased!"
David had never liked her—after all, his previous daughter-in-law came from a scholarly family, while she was just a poor person from the backwoods.
But so what?
She'd still given birth to the Getty family bloodline.
Gideon glanced at his mother's face. "In this matter, I don't want to oppose Cedric. If his company is in trouble, mine won't fare much better either."
He wasn't stupid enough for that.
In fact, he was also investigating who had leaked this information to reporters.
Briana choked, her eyes flickering evasively. "Anyway, after this project ends, hurry up and distance yourself from them. Don't let them drag you down."
Gideon ignored her.
Watching her son's departing back, Briana found a relatively secluded spot in the garden and called Lorelei.
"Is this reporter you introduced me to reliable? This matter absolutely cannot let Gid find out, or he'll definitely get angry with me! Are you listening?"
Lorelei hastily reassured her. "Don't worry. This reporter keeps his mouth shut tight. If he casually leaked who gave him information, who would provide him tips in the future?"
Briana thought that made sense. "I've gone all out for you and the child in your belly. You'd better not disappoint me. This time, Josephine must be completely disgraced!"
"Don't worry. She's a fake good person. Just wait and watch tomorrow's press conference—see how she gets completely disgraced."
Lorelei was full of confidence.
Tomorrow's press conference would definitely be spectacular.
