Chapter197 Too Late to Hide It Third Person POV
Grayson said nothing. He stared at the envelope.
"The originals are locked in Andrew's personal safe. I couldn't get to them." The man swallowed. His voice was unsteady. "I used my access to pull these from the radiology department's backup system."
Grayson set down his glass and waved his hand once.
The man turned and left immediately, pulling the door closed behind him.
The office fell completely silent.
Grayson reached for the envelope. He tore it open and tipped the contents onto the desk.
A detailed brain scan report. Two black-and-white CT films.
He held one of the films up toward the light overhead. The medical imaging meant nothing to him, but the printed report was another matter.
He put the film down and picked up the report.
He read through it page by page, skimming past the clinical terminology until he reached the last page.
His hand stopped.
At the bottom of the page, in clean printed text, a single line read:
Diagnosis: Post-traumatic retrograde amnesia. Accompanied by severe cranial nerve compression.
Grayson stared at those words for a solid ten seconds.
Then he laughed.
He dropped the report on the desk and leaned back in his chair.
"So it really is that bad."
He had spent weeks assuming this was a smokescreen, something Steven and Andrew had staged to buy time.
But there it was.
The Alpha of the Golden Moon Pack. The man who had been untouchable. He was sitting in a hospital bed right now not knowing his own name.
Grayson stood and walked to the floor-to-ceiling window. He looked out over the vast Golden Moon territory.
--
A knock at the door. The head of the enforcement unit stepped in.
"Grand Elder. Should we pass this information to the Elder Council? They've been waiting on an update."
Grayson looked at him. "The Elder Council?"
He picked up the report, folded it, pulled open the bottom drawer of his desk, and locked it inside.
"Sit on it. No one outside this room finds out. Not yet."
--
At the top floor of Bridgewest Hospital, Andrew and Steven were behind a closed door.
Both of them looked grim.
Steven stood at the desk with his hands braced on the surface. "Delete every record we can reach. Don't give Grayson anything else to work with."
Andrew was already shaking his head before Steven finished.
He slapped a handful of exam documents onto the desk. His voice dropped low. "It's too late for that."
"If Grayson's already got a line into the hospital, that means we have someone on the inside. Deleting records now won't help. It'll just make us look desperate."
Steven straightened up. He pulled at his tie and pressed two fingers against his temple.
The office was quiet for a moment.
"Then we seal the leak," Steven said. "Radiology, pharmacy, records room. Everyone who touched any files tonight. I want a full list. Find out who passed information out of this building, and deal with them."
Andrew agreed with a nod and got up to go organize the review.
Emma was standing in the doorway of the office. She had heard all of it.
She walked in and looked at the two of them.
There was a short silence before she spoke.
"Starting now, I'm not leaving this floor."
Steven and Andrew both looked up.
"Bella already got taken once. Grayson has Klaus's scan results. I'm next on his list. The more I move around outside, the more chances I'm handing him."
Andrew frowned. "Staying here doesn't mean you're safe either. If Grayson decides to bring people in by force, we can only hold this floor for so long."
Emma looked at him steadily. "Klaus can't take any more hits right now. He doesn't remember who he is. He has no way to protect himself."
At that moment, the sound of bedsheets shifting came from the room next door.
Klaus had pushed himself upright at some point without any of them noticing.
He was sitting up in his hospital gown, looking through the open doorway directly at Emma. He reached a hand out toward her.
"Come here."
Low. Quiet. An order that came from somewhere deeper than thought.
Emma turned and walked back into the room. The moment she came close enough, Klaus closed his hand around her wrist.
His palm was hot. His grip was strong enough to feel like he had no intention of ever letting go.
His eyes locked on hers.
"I can protect myself." His voice left no room for argument. "And I can protect you."
The memory was gone, but the Alpha's territorial instinct was still there, fully intact. He could feel the tension in the air. He could feel the unease coming off Emma. Every instinct he had was telling him to keep her within arm's reach.
Emma looked down at the hand wrapped around her wrist.
She didn't try to pull away.
She just gave a small nod.
"Okay," she said quietly. "I trust you."
Some of the hardness in Klaus's jaw eased.
But he didn't let go of her hand.
--
Bella was moved into a small recovery room next door to the treatment room after Andrew finished with her wounds.
Steven assigned two guards to her door. Even food and water came through the internal corridor only. No one outside the trusted circle was allowed anywhere near her.
Bella huddled in the corner of the bed, still pale, her arms wrapped around her knees, her body trembling slightly.
Emma came in to check on her after settling Klaus.
Bella heard the door and looked up instantly. Her eyes were full of guilt and fear.
"I'm sorry." Her voice cracked. "Did I get everyone hurt? If I hadn't said anything, they never would have known about his memory."
Emma poured a cup of warm water and set it within reach.
"That's not what matters right now," Emma said gently. "Rest and let your injuries heal. Don't go anywhere. After everything they put you through, nobody could have held out."
Bella wrapped both hands around the cup. They were still shaking. The warmth didn't do much to make her feel safer.
After a moment, she asked quietly, "Are they going to come for me again?"
Emma looked at her. She wasn't sure how to answer that honestly.
"You're the only person outside this hospital who had direct contact with Klaus. Grayson won't just let that go. But as long as you stay here, you're safe."
That was enough. Bella stopped asking questions. She just held the cup tightly against her chest and nodded.
--
Back at Golden Moon headquarters.
The enforcement unit head stood across the desk and spoke quietly. "What do we tell the Elder Council? They're still waiting."
Grayson leaned back in his chair. His eyes were cold.
"Nothing."
He looked up slowly.
"I want to see how much longer Steven and Andrew can hold things together."
