Chapter 788 Silent Mockery

Chapter 788 Silent Mockery

In an instant, Laura's mind went blank. An expression of disbelief crossed her face, followed by a deliberate attempt to appear composed.

"What nonsense are you talking about? These are all very expensive."

Maya curved her lips slightly. "In your mind, expensive things are the best, but let me tell you, in these luxury stores, the really expensive items are often the ones that aren't worth the money. The whole point is to sell them to people who don't know any better—people like you who have more money than sense."

Hearing Maya openly call her someone with more money than sense, Laura couldn't control her anger. She even wanted to physically teach Maya a lesson, but Maya saw right through her.

Maya said calmly, "Ms. Davis, we live in a society governed by law. And I can tell you really want to shake off that rough background of yours, but if you keep trying to use those cheap tactics to teach people lessons, you'll never make it into the circle you're trying to enter. Don't believe me? Go ahead and try."

Although Maya's words were full of mockery and contempt for Laura, there was one thing Laura had to admit—everything Maya said was true.

Laura's hands clenched into tight fists, trembling slightly from the force.

"I think you just can't afford these expensive bags, so you're saying everything I bought is outdated."

Hearing Laura's words, Maya burst out laughing—such mocking laughter. She had thought Laura simply didn't understand luxury brands, but now it seemed she wasn't very smart at all.

"Ms. Davis, you can take photos of these bags and search for them online. See if they're outdated styles, and check the secondhand prices and current online prices. I guarantee they'll be much cheaper than what you just paid in the store. Plus, many secondhand bags like the ones you bought don't even sell, which is exactly why this is the store's marketing strategy—to fool people exactly like you. I just feel bad for that sales clerk earlier. She was just trying to give you friendly advice, saw you had more money than sense, and ended up getting chewed out by you. I bet after this experience, she'll never be that nice again."

In that moment, Laura's face showed both disdain and extreme embarrassment. She clenched her fists and mocked, "Why should I listen to you? By the way, do we even know each other? How do you know me? How did you find out about me?"

Facing Laura's aggressive attitude, Maya felt confident, because it's not smart people you need to worry about—it's the dumb ones. And Laura was clearly that dumb person right now.

"You don't have to listen. I never said you had to search. If you don't want to search, that's fine too."

"I'm asking you how you know me? Do you know me?" Laura repeated her earlier question.

Maya smiled ambiguously and answered without hiding anything, "I don't just know you—we actually have some history together."

Hearing this, Laura frowned. "History? What do you mean?"

"Are you sure you haven't seen me before? Think carefully." Maya's gaze was deep, her tone carrying a hint of playfulness.

Hearing Maya's words, Laura hesitated slightly and looked carefully at Maya's face. The more she looked, the more familiar she seemed, but she just couldn't remember.

So she asked, "Just tell me who you are. You look familiar, but I can't remember."

Maya didn't directly reveal her identity. Instead, she patted the seat beside her. "Aren't you going to sit down? Are you going to keep standing there talking to me?"

After a moment's hesitation, Laura swaggered over and sat down on the single sofa nearby.

Maya curved her lips, not angry at all. Just then, the sales clerk brought in all the bags Laura had bought.

After the clerk left, Maya casually pointed to one of the black bags, looking mysterious. "This bag is from two years ago. When it first came out, it was indeed a limited edition, but because the style was pretty outdated, not many people bought it. This was one of their worst-selling bags, so they've been stuck with it until this year. If I remember correctly, this bag was placed in the corner in the least noticeable spot, but somehow you picked it. The sales clerk must be thrilled. And I'm sure news about this bag being sold will make some headlines soon—everyone will be talking about who would be clueless enough to buy a bag like this."

Laura frowned slightly but tried to stay composed. "I don't think the style matters. What matters is that I like it. Besides, who says old styles can't be fashionable?"

Hearing this, Maya couldn't help but laugh. "Ms. Davis, there's no point in pretending now. I'm just trying to give you friendly advice. You haven't left the store yet. If you want to return this bag, I can help you talk to them. Maybe you can return it and save yourself some money."

"Return it? Are you kidding? I never return things I buy. So what if it's an outdated style? I like it, it looks good—that's all that matters. Why are you acting like you know everything? The brand store put this bag out for display, which means it's for sale."

Seeing Laura's attitude, Maya had no other options. She continued on her own, "You bought five bags today. I can tell you very responsibly that they're all styles other people wouldn't buy, and after you buy them, they'll just sit in your closet gathering dust."

Being told this by Maya, Laura felt deeply embarrassed. She still tried to defend herself.

"Stop showing off. They're just a few bags. It's not as complicated as you're making it sound."

Seeing that Laura's rough background was deeply ingrained and couldn't be changed, Maya just smiled it off. Then she pointed to the jewelry gift box and sighed, "This black diamond set is also from last year's collection. The diamonds themselves aren't very valuable—most of the price is in the design, which is why many people don't want to buy it. I've been a regular customer at this store since last year, and this black diamond set has been sitting here the whole time. I never expected you'd be the one to buy it today."

Although Maya wasn't cursing or saying anything explicit, Laura felt like she was constantly mocking her. She wanted to fight back but didn't know how.

Because when she bought this jewelry set earlier, she kept praising how beautiful it was and even pretentiously gave the clerk her opinion. Now thinking about it, the clerk must have been laughing at her the whole time.

The more she thought about it, the angrier Laura became, but she had no way to vent her frustration.

"Whatever. I'll just wear it once." Laura was still trying to salvage her dignity.

But her pretense meant nothing in front of Maya. Maya curved her lips. "Rich people don't wear this kind of jewelry. What they care about most is collectible value."
