Chapter 146 Isn't It Too Risky?

Sean could easily tell something was off with Benedict.

"Benedict, Laura's practically family. Come on, let's talk in my office."

Sean opened the door, signaling a close bond by calling him Benedict.

Benedict had no choice but to follow Sean and his daughter into the office.

Sean offered him a cigarette and asked Laura to make some coffee.

Benedict declined the coffee, saying it would keep him up.

Sean insisted, "Don't worry. If you came to me with a problem, I'll make sure it's solved. Let's chat over coffee."

Once the coffee was ready and they were smoking, the conversation began.

Laura spoke first, "Benedict, just tell us what's going on! If I can help, I definitely will!"

Her beautiful face was full of sincerity.

Sean sat there, his posture straight and exuding confidence.

Benedict calmly explained the situation.

But Sean and Laura couldn't stay calm.

Laura jumped up, exclaiming, "Who the hell would dare kidnap Susie? I'll find them and make them pay!"

Sean didn't stand up but slammed his hand on the table, "Bastards!"

The cups on the table rattled.

His face darkened, "On my turf? Unbelievable. Benedict, don't worry, I've got your back!"

Benedict smiled slightly, "Mr. Howard, do I look worried?"

Sean looked at Benedict and then laughed, "Alright, you must have a plan. Otherwise, you wouldn't be so calm."

Laura was taken aback and said, "Benedict, what's your plan? I want to help."

Benedict shook his head, "Laura, no need to get excited. I'll rescue my daughter myself. I promised my wife. But I need two guns from Mr. Howard—a handgun and a sniper rifle, with rubber bullets."

Laura was surprised, "Hey! Guns are my specialty!"

Benedict replied, "Laura, you don't need to get involved. This is my specialty, too."

Sean was curious, "Benedict, you know how to use guns?"

"Oh, I learned during my years at Imperial. Mr. Howard, I have a suspect in mind, so it's best if you don't get directly involved. The kidnappers are experienced and ruthless. Any mistake could cost Susie her life. I need to handle this myself. Once it's over, you can deal with the culprits."

Laura was still worried, "Benedict, this is too risky. What if there are too many of them and you're alone?"

Sean raised his hand, "Laura, no need to say more. Benedict's judgment is sound. The fewer people who know, the better."

Laura pouted, looking disappointed, but said nothing more.

Benedict said, "Thank you for your concern. Mr. Howard, is there any problem with the guns?"

"No problem. I'll have someone bring them over from the warehouse, along with extra bullets. But are you sure you can handle this? If not, Laura can go with you, or I can..."

Benedict smiled, "Mr. Howard, just give me the guns. The kidnappers want ransom and have made it clear that only I can deliver it, not police. This shows how serious they are. Having someone else with me would only increase the risk to Susie."

"Alright," Sean nodded, his expression serious, "But be careful. Take a tracker with you, just in case."

"Sure, that sounds good. Thank you for your concern. I'll also need a walkie-talkie."

"No problem. Do you have the money ready? If not, I can help."

"Mr. Howard, I have the money ready. This must remain confidential."

Twenty minutes later, Benedict left the office.

He had the guns he needed, a tracker, and a sleek walkie-talkie.

As for Kenneth's involvement, he decided not to mention it to the Howards for now.

First, he needed to rescue Susie.

Driving, he remained vigilant, keeping an eye out for anyone tailing him. The kidnappers had chosen to strike when he was out of Newport, which was suspicious. He hadn't been careful before, but now he saw no suspicious vehicles or people. He knew the kidnappers were likely making other arrangements. The hostage exchange would be the main event.

So, at 2 AM, Benedict woke up Albert.

Albert, driving his old car, met Benedict at an underground garage near Lakeview Park. Upon hearing about the mission, Albert was wide awake, like he'd been injected with adrenaline. When he learned Susie had been kidnapped, Albert was furious, ready to take down the kidnappers.

"Benedict, don't worry. I'll follow your plan! We'll catch those bastards and make them pay!"

Benedict said, "I'll take the handgun. You take the sniper rifle, that's your specialty. We'll stay in contact with the walkie-talkies. Aim to injure, not kill. I need them alive. Here's the plan for tomorrow morning..."

After giving instructions, Albert left with the sniper rifle.

Benedict returned home. The master bedroom door was closed. Light seeped through the crack. Bella and Jessica were still awake, talking softly. They were worried about Susie's safety.

Bella, tearful, said, "Jessica, it's so cold out. What if Susie is freezing? Did she have dinner? My poor daughter."

"Don't cry, Bella! If you cry, I'll be sad too. We have to trust Benedict. And the Howards are helping."

"Trust, yes. But can he guarantee Susie won't suffer?"

"These despicable kidnappers deserve the worst! All for money. I hope they have some decency and don't harm a child."

"Susie, my Susie."

Benedict listened, his heart aching. He took a deep breath and lay down on the couch. He didn't go to comfort them. The situation was relatively stable. Maybe, after going through this ordeal, they would fully forgive Benedict's past. It would help the family become more united, stable, and harmonious.

The next morning, Benedict went for his usual run. He was sure no one was following or watching him. These kidnappers were indeed pros.

At their usual spot, Laura showed up. As always, she was fresh, neat, and confident, with a faint fragrance. They met, warmed up, and raced. Laura still lost to Benedict. Benedict won easily.

Laura claimed it was because she hadn't been able to train while traveling. Women do have their pride. Benedict told her to keep at it, hoping she could beat him someday.

Laura insisted she would, but she still wanted to help with rescuing Susie, saying it was too risky for him alone.

Benedict laughed, "If you guys get involved, it would be even riskier. If my daughter gets hurt because of that, will you give me another one?"
