Late at night, Samuel rushed to the hospital.
The moment he entered the ward, Zenobia threw herself into his arms.
Her delicate face pressed against Samuel's shoulder, looking so fragile and helpless that no man could resist such vulnerability—especially from a former lover.
Samuel told himself he only felt sympathy for Zenobia.
"Samuel, what am I going to do?" Zenobia's voice broke with sobs. "I can't bear the thought of losing Thalassa. I'll fall apart, Samuel. I really will."
Samuel gently held her shoulders, his gaze drifting to little Thalassa on the hospital bed.
After the emergency treatment, Thalassa's condition had stabilized and she was sleeping peacefully. Still, Samuel didn't want to discuss this in front of the child. He urged Zenobia to stay strong, promising that he was there for her and would find a way to cure Thalassa's illness.
Zenobia was naturally moved.
She buried herself in Samuel's embrace, her hands clutching his shirt as silent tears streamed down her face.
After a long moment, she lifted her beautiful face and turned away slightly. "Samuel, I'm sorry for breaking down like this."
Samuel kept his hands on her shoulders, offering a gentle smile. "When you care this much, it's natural to lose composure. I understand."
Zenobia stepped away from his embrace and walked to the table to pour him some water.
After a moment, she seemed to remember something.
"After tonight's emergency treatment, Dr. Zander—the specialist from overseas—mentioned that the world's best surgeon for this type of heart transplant is right here in Evergreen City."
Samuel immediately responded, "No matter the cost, I'll get that doctor to operate on Thalassa."
Zenobia's fingers trembled.
Samuel noticed her reaction and walked over, coming up behind her. "What's wrong? Don't you trust me?"
Zenobia shook her head gently, then suddenly turned to face him. "The doctor Zander mentioned is your wife. Samuel, would you even be able to get her to agree? Taylor must resent me. How could she possibly save Thalassa? I really don't blame her, Samuel. Even if she refuses to operate on Thalassa, I won't think she's cruel. She just loves you too much."
As she finished speaking, she reached up to gently touch Samuel's strong features, her eyes filled with longing and sorrow. "Samuel, what would it take for her to believe there's nothing between us?"
Zenobia's touch was brief and fleeting.
Her entire being radiated such fragility that Samuel's heart ached watching her.
Samuel couldn't help but think of Taylor.
Tonight, Taylor had demanded a divorce with such authority, leaving no room for discussion.
Compared to Zenobia, Taylor possessed none of a woman's gentleness. She was always so commanding and imperious that Samuel's needs as a man often went unmet in her presence, which was why he gradually stopped wanting to come home.
Seeing Samuel's displeasure, Zenobia said considerately, "I'll explain everything to Dr. Montague. I think she'll believe there's nothing improper between us."
Samuel sighed softly. "If only Taylor had half your understanding."
Zenobia smiled. "Dr. Montague just focuses all her energy on work and overlooks your feelings. Samuel, please don't blame her."
Samuel found Zenobia even more endearing.
That night, he stayed at the hospital with Zenobia and Thalassa. Mindful of appearances, he slept on the sofa without undressing. In the middle of the night, Zenobia came over to cover him with a blanket.
Samuel was actually awake but kept his eyes closed. He could smell her feminine fragrance and vaguely sensed Zenobia's affection and dependence on him, but he chose to ignore it.
In the darkness, a soft hand gently traced his nose and lips.
Samuel's breathing quickened as Zenobia whispered in his ear, "Samuel, I've missed you all these years."
Samuel clenched his fists, resisting Zenobia's temptation.
They had been intimate during college, and whether anything happened tonight was entirely up to him. But he hadn't lost his mind completely—he didn't want to divorce Taylor, at least not yet.
The next morning, Taylor ate breakfast alone.
The household staff had caught wind of the situation and knew Samuel had a mistress outside. While serving breakfast, they expressed their indignation on Taylor's behalf. "Mr. Collins was lured away again last night. Mrs. Collins, why don't you put a stop to it?"
Taylor smiled faintly. "It's out of my hands where he goes."
The staff criticized her for being too permissive.
Taylor considered telling them about the divorce but decided against it. Most of the staff had been assigned from the Montague Mansion to ensure her comfort. When she and Samuel divorced, she would need to make new arrangements for them—she couldn't let them lose their jobs without cause.
After a simple breakfast, Taylor went to the hospital.
She had an important surgery scheduled.
The operation finished at one in the afternoon. After washing up, Taylor headed back to her office for lunch. She had barely reached the corridor when her secretary hurried over. "Dr. Montague, Mr. Collins is here!"
Taylor didn't break stride. As she grasped the door handle, she asked quietly, "Samuel?"
The secretary nodded reluctantly. "Yes, him! Dr. Montague, Mr. Collins seems to be here about a child. The child was originally being treated at another hospital but was transferred here this morning. Normally, admitting patients wouldn't be an issue, but Mr. Collins specifically requested that you be the attending physician. No one dared agree to that. So Mr. Collins is waiting in your office."
Taylor smiled coolly and pushed open the door.
Sure enough, her husband Samuel was inside, impeccably dressed in his suit, sitting on the sofa with a laptop on his knees, rapidly handling business matters.
Taylor had to admire him—what remarkable composure!
She closed the office door and sat at her desk to enjoy her lunch, her tone almost cheerful. "Are you here because you've come to your senses about the divorce? Perfect timing—I'm free this afternoon."
Samuel frowned. "That's not why I'm here."
Taylor had a healthy appetite. She took a bite of her food before asking, "Then what brings you here? Tell me, maybe I can help."
She was clearly putting on an act, which irritated Samuel greatly.
He spoke in a low voice, "It's about Zenobia's daughter. I want you to be her attending physician."
Taylor forced a smile.
She set down her fork and looked at her husband with sharp eyes. "What's Zenobia's daughter to you? When a child needs medical care, shouldn't her biological parents be the ones making the arrangements? Samuel, why are you so eager to help?"
Samuel was about to lose his temper when Taylor continued, "It's not impossible. But Samuel, I have one condition. We finalize our divorce this afternoon, and I'll admit her immediately. As for whether we can find a matching heart, I can't guarantee that—it's a matter of luck."
Divorce?
Samuel refused to agree. "Taylor, don't push it."
Taylor laughed coldly.
She pressed the intercom button, her tone flat. "Send two security guards up here to escort Mr. Collins out."
