Chapter 483 Sarah: You Forced Me 2
In the study, Matthew sat with an inscrutable expression, shadows playing across his face.
"Has he still not confessed?" he asked Aaron, who was refilling his tea.
Aaron smiled faintly. "Would Mr. Windsor easily admit to such serious charges? I heard he's been beaten severely but refuses to say a word."
Matthew scoffed. "He's quite resilient, isn't he?"
Taking the teacup, he blew away the loose tea leaves. "For stubborn cases like this, we might need special methods. Those men pride themselves on their efficiency, don't they? Tell them to use whatever means necessary to extract a confession from Oliver."
"Is that wise?" Aaron asked with a cautious smile.
Matthew set down his cup sharply. "You seem concerned about him."
Aaron quickly shook his head. "I'm worried about your relationship with your daughter. She and Mr. Windsor have grown quite close."
Matthew stared into space momentarily.
After a while, he laughed coldly. "Do you think she has any feelings left for me after what happened? Let me tell you, Aaron—of all the Moore children, including Vaughn and Nicholas, Sarah is most like me. When she decides to be ruthless, she's truly merciless."
"She combines strength with gentleness," Aaron added diplomatically.
"You always know how to praise her."
Just then, the phone on the desk rang. Matthew cleared his throat before answering. "Matthew speaking."
On the other end, a hospital director nervously informed him that Nicholas had attempted suicide.
The phone slipped from Matthew's hand and crashed to the floor.
By early morning, doctors and nurses hurried in and out of the emergency room.
Matthew looked haggard. Vaughn and his wife stood nearby, fighting back tears.
Hestia rushed in, frantically asking, "Why would Nicholas try to kill himself? Was it because of that wretched Azalea?"
A check was tossed in front of Hestia.
"Sarah paid three million dollars to see Nicholas once," Matthew murmured..
The incident had deeply shaken Matthew. Nicholas, whom he had carefully groomed for years in high society, had been swayed by just a few words from Sarah. His heart was too soft for this world.
Sarah was ruthless enough, but unfortunately, she was a daughter, not a son.
While Hestia cursed, Matthew called Sarah. She answered, and for a long moment, father and daughter—bound by blood—remained silent, with only their shallow breathing audible.
Matthew finally broke the silence. "You knew he loved you, yet you drove him to suicide!"
Sarah's voice was emotionless. "You threatened my child's life and want Oliver dead. Why shouldn't I have power over Nicholas's fate? I'm not God, but I believed I could control whether he lived or died."
"Matthew, don't push me." She addressed him by name for the first time.
When she had received those photos of Oliver, he had ceased being her father in her eyes—he had become a monster.
Matthew laughed darkly. "I wasn't wrong about you. Of all my children, you're most like me."
"I'm ashamed to have your blood in my veins," Sarah replied coldly before hanging up.
Hestia grabbed the phone and launched into a tirade, calling Sarah vicious and cruel.
The phone only responded with a dial tone.
Matthew glared at her. "Will your curses bring Nicholas back to life?"
Hestia broke down sobbing, pledging her loyalty to Matthew. "If Nicholas doesn't survive, I'll die with him."
Matthew didn't believe her. Such words meant nothing to him.
Leaning back against the bench, he closed his eyes and remarked sarcastically, "Are you really willing to give up your life of pleasure and indulgence?"
Hestia fell silent, her insincerity exposed.
After a night of emergency treatment, Nicholas was out of danger.
When he regained consciousness, he asked to see Matthew.
In the VIP hospital room, Nicholas lay in bed, surrounded by an oppressive silence.
The IV dripped steadily.
Matthew approached and sat beside the bed. Before he could offer any comforting words, Nicholas spoke softly, "You went after her, didn't you? You wanted to terminate her pregnancy and harvest her bone marrow for Isaac, right?"
Matthew didn't deny it.
"I did it for the Moore family," he said. "Isaac is our only male heir."
Nicholas stared at the ceiling, his Adam's apple bobbing as he swallowed.
After a while, he spoke quietly. "Since we're alone, I won't hide it anymore. I love her—I've always loved her. In my heart, Verity and Isaac combined don't mean as much to me as she does. Besides, my life is worthless anyway."
"Do you think I actually enjoy high society? All that scheming and backstabbing exhausts me!"
"But I played the game because you wanted me to. I did everything you asked. Why won't you leave her alone? Why terminate her pregnancy and take her bone marrow?"
"Stop this now! Or I'll announce to the world that I love her—that I love my own—"
A slap landed across his face.
Matthew was devastated.
He stared at Nicholas, hardly believing what he'd heard. "Nicholas, it's bad enough that you've lost your mind, but would you really broadcast it to the world? You live and die for her, but does she care for you at all? If she did, how could she ask you to kill yourself?"
"Isn't that what love is?" Nicholas replied. "Like a moth to a flame—expecting nothing in return."
Matthew froze.
In that moment, he seemed to age another decade.
