Chapter 208 Like old times - Monet

Chapter 208 Like old times - Monet
I reluctantly turn around, the blonde smiling sincerely at me with kind brown eyes that look like you can drown in them.
"Monet." Her voice seems soft and gentle, instantly calming me down. "It's such a pleasure to finally meet you."
She gets up, and holds her hand out to me, and I look at it with distrust. Who is this woman, and why is she at this dinner?
"I'm doctor Maxwell." She holds her hand out until I shake it briefly. "Please, have a seat, I'm not staying long, but Cole asked me to come speak with you tonight, so I thought I'd take some time since he was such a good patient."
"You look awfully young to be a doctor." I sit down in the chair that Cole holds out for me, his hand sneakily brushing my lower back before he sits down next to me.
"I get that a lot." She smiles. "And I probably am for a psychiatrist."
"Doctor Maxwell was one of my psychiatrists at the clinic I was a patient at." Cole's arm stays on the back of my chair, his fingertips resting lightly on my arm.
"Cole said you had a little bit of a hard time understanding why he wasn't in contact with you while he was an in-patient." Dr. Maxwell keeps her kind, brown gaze on me. "Cole chose not to go on any medication, because obviously he is an athlete and he doesn't want anything to interfere with that."
I almost roll my eyes, thinking how the asshole went to the combine first.
"We are using different types of psychological techniques to get the patient to the best version of themselves." She continues. "We believe that the patient should be as healthy as possible before going on with his or her life, like relationships for instance. Even the patients who are married when they come to us, we strive to let the patient deal with all childhood trauma or any subsequent trauma first before going on with their adult life."
"But I was a part of his childhood." I frown.
"We were well aware of that. Cole also told us that you are his future, so in order for him to go on with his future, we suggested that he has no contact with you until he was in a better space." She sighs with a smile. "I know not everyone agrees with this method, and we have gotten a lot of criticism for it, but we have a very good success rate of patients going back into the world and leading healthy lives with healthy relationships, without falling back into old habits."
"What about the combine?" I want to know. "You don't think he could have at least come to me first and explained all this to me? The first time I see him is on a televsion screen, do you think that was fair to me at all?"
"Maybe not." She shrugs slightly. "But football is a part of Cole, and I suggested he does the combine first, solidfying his future for the both of you, and then come to see you."
I purse my lips, overwhelmed by what she's saying and fucking overwhelmed with his body so close to mine, his scent all around me. How the fuck am I suppsoed to stay mad at him?
"I hope you find it in your heart to forgive him." Her eyes go to Cole for the first time, and I see the kindness and understanding in them. "I honestly hope the two of you manage to work things out."
I tell her goodbye when she gets up and shakes Cole's hand before she leaves, her presence still lingering long after she left and the two of us just sit there, me playing with the chopsticks, and Cole looking at the side of my face.
I don't have much appetite left after that, and he still knows me too well, because he orders for me, and I force myself to eat a few pieces, the silence between us calm, but heavy.
"You wanna go home?" He asks after he notices I've stopped eating completely, his fingers rubbing circles on my skin.
"Yes."
I have so many things I want to say to him, I want to cuss him and kiss him at the same time. Hit him and fuck him simultaneously. His hand lingers at the small of my back when he walks me to my car, but I don't miss the way his pinky finger rubs over the swell of my ass.
"Thanks for dinner." I clear my throat when we stop at my car. "And thanks for letting Dr.Maxwell come talk to me."
He nods, a frown between his dark eyebrows and a burn in his eyes. He kisses the side of my face softly before he steps back. "Thanks for coming, it felt like old times."
We hold each other's gazes before I get in my car and drive off, his black truck right behind me as I drive to the apartment that's supposed to be ours. When I park, he's still behind me, and I walk over to the passenger side of his truck, and the window rolls down.
"Why are you still following me?" I want to know.
He licks his lips seductively, that burn in his eyes still there and all too familiar.
He leans over, and opens the door without saying a word, looking at me expectantly.
I realize it's an invitation for me to get inside, the look in his eyes telling me exactly what is going to happen if I do.
