Chapter 320

Chapter 320

Emily froze for a moment, completely caught off guard by the scar on Sophie's abdomen.

"What are you staring at?" Sophie snapped, noticing her gaze. "Don't you people have any professional ethics? Is this how you look at patients?"

"Sorry," Emily lowered her voice, keeping her eyes on the ultrasound screen. "It's just that the scar looks... unusual."

"Oh, I got it saving someone," Sophie replied dismissively.

Emily's mind raced. Alexander had been targeted in an assassination attempt once, and Emily herself had taken the knife for him, leaving her with a scar. So where did Sophie's scar come from?

As Emily continued the examination, her brow furrowed slightly, her eyes reflecting a mix of confusion and suspicion.

Sophie studied the nurse's face more carefully, feeling something oddly familiar about her.

"Emily!" she suddenly exclaimed.

"What?" Emily instinctively responded, immediately realizing her mistake.

Sophie immediately sat up, pulling her shirt down. "I knew it was you! What are you doing here? Sneaking in to check if I have a scar?"

Before Emily could explain herself, Sophie broke into a triumphant laugh. "All your scheming for nothing, Emily! Just wait—I'll make sure Alexander cuts all ties with you after this! I can already see the disappointment and finality in his eyes!"

Her smile stretched to its limits, clearly savoring the moment.

Sophie quickly left the ultrasound room.

James immediately approached her. "Ms. Laurent..."

"Where's Alexander? Get him here now! Emily's hiding in the ultrasound room, trying to harass me."

They were tied to the same fate now. James knew better than anyone what he'd done to Emily, and he had no illusions about being forgiven.

He immediately called Alexander.

As soon as the call connected, James rushed to explain the situation without waiting for a greeting.

"Mr. Foster, please come quickly. Ms. Laurent isn't feeling well, and Ms..." He caught himself, remembering Emily and Alexander's complicated relationship, and changed his wording. "Mrs. Foster seems to be causing some trouble."

"What's she trying to do?" The voice didn't come from the phone, but from directly behind him.

James jumped, spinning around to face Alexander in person.

Recovering quickly, James put away his phone. "I'm not entirely sure, but she's not medical staff, yet she's in the ultrasound room—it's quite strange."

"She's clearly still jealous of me, which I understand," Sophie interjected, putting on a vulnerable expression. "But showing up here unexpectedly—what is she planning?"

"I know exactly what I'm planning," Emily said, emerging from the ultrasound room with an ultrasound image in hand. "Sophie, there are some things you should explain."

"What things?"

"You've never been pregnant." Emily's voice was steady, her words precise.

There was a moment of tense silence as Sophie's face flickered with uncertainty.

After a few seconds, she lifted her chin defiantly. "What's the problem? Of course, I've never been pregnant. I'm not married—why would I be pregnant? That's perfectly normal."

Her self-righteous tone made her statement sound almost comical in the circumstances.

Emily gave a cold smile. "So you were lying to me before?"

"What are you talking about?" Sophie's voice rose defensively.

"It doesn't matter whether you were lying or not anymore." Emily wasn't interested in dwelling on this point. "Since you've lied about this, we should reconsider many things. Perhaps we should continue this conversation somewhere more private."

Sophie's face showed clear panic.

She turned to Alexander. "What's going on? Why is she suddenly claiming I was pregnant? Alexander, you know I've always been... proper."

"If that's true, you have nothing to worry about," Emily said coolly, her smile not reaching her eyes. "A conversation might clear everything up."

Sophie was visibly shaken.

Alexander ignored her, turning to James instead. "Take her to the nearest coffee shop."

"Mr. Foster..."

Alexander didn't acknowledge James's hesitation. Instead, he took Emily's arm and led her to a nearby office.

Once the door closed behind them, he turned to her. "What do you think?"

"What do I think about what?" She removed the nurse's coat, folded it neatly, and handed him the ultrasound printout. "I've confirmed she's never been pregnant."

Emily stated the facts plainly, but her mind kept returning to the scar on Sophie's abdomen.

Where did it come from?

It couldn't possibly be that when Alexander was attacked, Emily took one knife for him, and then Sophie immediately took another. That would be absurdly far-fetched.

Such a fantastical scenario couldn't possibly happen in real life.

So was the scar something Sophie had arranged beforehand, worried her lies would be exposed?

It made sense—Sophie must have considered the possibility of intimacy with Alexander, and without a scar to match her story, wouldn't her entire deception fall apart?

But then, where did that scar actually come from?

Lost in thought, her face showed clear confusion.

"What is it?" Alexander noticed her expression and grew concerned. "Since she wasn't pregnant, doesn't that lend some credibility to what I've been saying?"

"Pregnancy and having been intimate are two different matters," Emily replied with a slight smile. "You've always been careful about contraception, after all."

With that, she walked out of the office.

Alexander followed, irritated by her dismissive smile and feeling increasingly frustrated.

He knew his past behavior had crossed boundaries, and now Emily's doubts left him with no way to explain himself.

At the coffee shop, the wait had stretched Sophie's nerves to their breaking point.

Not understanding what Alexander and Emily were planning, she grew increasingly agitated. They wanted to prove she hadn't been pregnant?

When she had provoked Emily back then, she'd only wanted to make her leave in anger.

The job was done—why bring it up now? Who could prove she'd ever claimed to be pregnant?

Sophie repeatedly reassured herself, but her darting eyes betrayed her anxiety.

When Alexander and Emily finally entered the coffee shop together, Sophie immediately looked up.

Seeing them walking side by side, looking so perfectly matched, she felt a snake-like jealousy gnawing at her heart, bringing inexplicable fury.

Outwardly, however, she displayed only sorrow.

"Now that we're here, can we talk properly? Today's examination..." She glanced at Alexander, then turned to Emily. "You arranged this deliberately, didn't you? Why would you do such a thing?"

After a pause, she continued: "I don't know what you're trying to do, but I'm not married, so naturally I couldn't have been pregnant. There's nothing to verify about that."

Emily wasn't bothered by Sophie's denial. "That makes sense. I'm surprised you still have some sense of shame. Would you like to hear some recordings?"

Emily played the recordings Sophie had sent her, and Sophie's face gradually drained of color.

"You... how dare you frame me like this?"
