"Are you sure that you still want to be here with me? You can still leave if you want."
I turned and openly glared at my mate. He has asked the same question over and over again for the past half an hour that we have been seated and waiting for the executive to happen. Right now, various deltas were putting the final touches to all their preparations and I have to admit that it kind of felt scary that they were doing everything in preparation to murder two people. But when I remember what those two have done and just how many people they have taken their lives unjustly, I just can't feel bad for them.
"If you ask me that one last time, I will tell the guards to walk you out of here. I feel like you are the one who doesn't want to be here."
I whispered to him. Of course, I won't ask the king to leave but it felt good to warn and felt even better when he nodded politely.
"Yes ma'am."
He whispered back and left me alone. I watched as the deltas went about their duties and soon, one of the king's spokespersons came out and addressed the press. Then Bernardo was called to speak which he did in a short and precise way. When he sat back next to me, I reached for his hand and held it in mine.
The rest of the event went pretty fast and then it was time for the main reason for the gathering. Both criminals were led out in chains. I could barely recognize Sean, he looked so close to death that killing him felt like showing him mercy.
If I didn't know just how much of a demon the sad old man was, I would have felt bad for him with how he looked so pitiful. I knew too much about him to feel bad for him even as he almost fell over while the deltas led him to the place where he would meet his end.
Theo on the other hand looked way better than his father but that doesn't mean he looked good. Whatever Helaine did to him must have weakened him but I could still see the stubborn look in the way he glared in our direction. He wasn't remorseful at all.
I couldn't help but wonder if his life would have been different if he had been born by someone else because no matter how we think about it, Theo was greatly influenced by his father. Everything he became was a result of what his father programmed in his mind while he was growing up.
He did plenty of evil on his own and I know damn well that he won't stop if given a second chance so good riddance. I felt a shiver run through me when he looked at me directly and our eyes met. I looked away almost immediately. Bernardo noticed and I tried to play it off by smiling but he knew me too much.
"Why?"
He asked me. I shook my head and looked back at Theo, he was still watching me even though he was now far away from me. I wonder what was going through his mind. Does he still believe he got me when he kidnapped Helaine? That would explain why he was giving that look. Maybe he was plotting my death or something. Such a terrible demon.
"He is giving me creepy looks but don't worry, I can handle it."
I told him and looked back at our little sinner about to meet his end. He still had eyes on me.
"I think he is plotting against you for real. Should I slow his punishment and make him suffer more? I can do that."
I looked at him and shook my head.
"Don't do that because of me. At the end of the day, after today, he will be over for good. Let's just stick to the judgment that you already passed."
I told him.
"Okay, you missed the chance to be mean to him back,"
I didn't answer him. Theo wasn't really all that mean to him after I turned him down. He just ignored me mostly except for a few times but I don't hold those against him anymore. He has done far worse things that he should be judged for and not the petty things and he was rightfully facing the consequences of all his actions.
I listened as the judgment that was passed on them was once again read out loud and a chance for any of the sitting elders and betas to oppose but no one dared to say something which was understandable since the king's words were law and final in few occasions where the elders try to change his mind.
This wasn't one of those times so the next agenda was the execution proper. While Sean made no move to resist or try to get away, Theo did try but he was basically powerless against the strong and healthy deltas and the chains that were used to hold him in place.
According to the judgment that was passed on them, they will each get fifty strokes of wipes after which they will be put down. I watched as both men were wiped and it surprised me how I didn't flinch or feel bad for them. After the flogging, it was finally time to end them both. The first person being Sean who already gave up.
He looked really defeated as the mass that would end him was lowered down on him in a slow motion building a crazy suspense. I couldn't watch anymore so I just lowered my eyes and in the next moment I heard an agonizing cry and then there was silence.
I lifted my head to see that they were already wrapping the remains of him. he will be buried with no ceremony and his grave will remain unmarked. Whereas, if he had died as the king's relative and a one-time beta, he would have been buried with honors. I watched as they carried his lifeless body away and then it was his son's turn. Unlike his father who just gave up without fighting, Theo refused to give in and decided that he would fight as much as he could even though it was obvious that he would lose.
